Quake1 Reborn

Jun 06, 2001 8:09am CST tags: Valve, id Software, Quake
(Reposting for the morning crowd) I must have rewritten this sentence a dozen times and I just don't know how else to put this eloquently. Valve Software's in-house internet mod support team has gotten permission from id Software to port Quake to Half-Life and they have done so. It's looking just about complete and will be released "very soon".

Well they didn't bring over the entire game. It's just deathmatch and only the 'classic' maps that were played so much when Quake was at the top of the heap. The maps that are included in DMC are nearly play and look identical to the originals. The maps that will be included in the first release are:

DM2 - Claustrophobopolis      [also a snapshot from original]
DM3 [2] - The Abandoned Base      [also a snapshot from original]
DM4 - The Bad Place      [also a snapshot from original]
DM6 - The Dark Zone      [also a snapshot from original]
E1M2 - Castle Of The Damned      [also a snapshot from original]

Exclusive? Yeah well it looks like there was a little bit of miscommunication in the PR department at Valve.

Nov 29, 2000 5:47pm CST tags: Quake, Demo
This one slipped by earlier this morning but I caught it! A playable demo of LaserArena from TrainWreck Studios has been released. You can grab it from FilePlanet or DemoNews. The game is based on the Quake1 engine (Just like Half-Life2! heh) and looks pretty novel to me. At least worth a look although not really for this crowd. Here's the details & minithumbnail rampage:

Quake1 Beta Shots

Jun 21, 2000 2:12am CST tags: John Romero, Quake, Beta
Consideringthumb_062100_q1beta_10.jpg (1632 bytes) the massive interest in those Quake3 beta screenshots, I figured we'll make it nostalgia week here. I dug up these screenshots of the early Quake1 betas, circa 1995! Mmm.. I remember when these came out. Drool! You can also check out the attached document written by John Romero.

The cool Quake lighting can be seen in all these screen shots and a couple sprites and an Alias model as well. We don't have any Alias models working in the game at this point, but we're >this< close to getting them fully implemented with movement, proper light sourcing and animation. Screen q6.gif has our dragon hovering above a bridge above a moat. <snip>
