EuroGamer, GameSpot and Computer & Video Games have all gone live with new previews of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, as the highly anticipated multiplayer action was recently shown off at developer Splash Damage. The previews, which include snazzy new screenshots, cover DOOM 3 engine modifications, encouraging teamplay, the team's vehicles, the learning curve, character classes and more.
Throughout all this, the key word is "teamplay". Wedgwood says it a lot. Of course there is some scope for personal achievement - an experience points system, which is being worked on at the moment, carries through each campaign, and Wedgwood promises it won't be as simplistic as something like CTF assists. "You can't just stand next to a flag and bank some points." They're also toying with the idea of persistent ranks. But it is a team game first and foremost. With absolutely no single-player in the box. As to what is in the box, there's talk of 12 maps, although they may cut or add maps right up to the last minute, and Wedgwood's quite clear about why: "It doesn't matter if we've spent six months on one, if we're not happy with it and it's not fun we're not going to ship it," he states.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Report

Aug 15, 2005 2:10pm CST tags: id Software, Quake Wars
On Saturday we were able to sit down with id Software's Kevin Cloud and Splash Damage's Paul Wedgewood, who were at QuakeCon to talk a bit more about the multiplayer action game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. We have our report here, covering topics like gameplay, the class system, MegaTexture technology and more.
An example scenario we were given was the earth forces trying to establish a new base across a map. The earth forces would need to escort the huge mobile base convoy and clear the path to a destination. Smaller objectives along the way would be things like building a bridge or destroying particular defense structures. Assuming you complete the mission you do get to see the base actually deploy--it's reminiscent of establishing a new base in Command & Conquer.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Announced

May 16, 2005 12:41pm CST tags: Activision, id Software, Quake Wars
id Software and Activision today announced Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, a new strategic shooter by Splash Damage (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory). The game pits humans vs invading Strogg forces, as they battle for control of Earth. Quake Wars promises strategic gameplay, persistent character promotions, day and night-time battles, and vehicle support. It's also mentioned that Quake Wars is powered by id Software's new MegaTexture rendering technology.
As the invasion begins, players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the EDF (Earth Defense Force -- humans) or the barbaric alien Strogg armies, each augmented with specialist weapons and combat hardware. Troops utilize over 40 conventional and futuristic vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems like quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to lend firepower from the air. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the enemy.
Unlike Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, this won't be a free download. No release date is mentioned either, but that isn't terribly surprising considering id's involvement.
