Quake2 Source v3.21

Dec 27, 2001 11:29pm CST tags: Quake 2

On Q2 Source

Dec 22, 2001 3:32pm CST tags: John Carmack, id Software, Quake 2
With the release of the Quake2 source code John Carmack is getting spanked with the hate mail as you'd expect from people worried about cheating. He made a post on Slashdot last night saying the Mac code is coming, and also that "another old game's code" will be released soon. Also, Todd H at id Software has a .plan update about Q2 licensing for private use.

Quake2 Source Code!

Dec 21, 2001 7:05pm CST tags: John Carmack, Quake 2
As a Christmas present (or whatever you wanna call it if you dont celebrate Christmas) John Carmack has decided to release the Quake2 source code to the net. You can grab the small little ZIP file from Fileshack or id's FTP . Have a look at the .plan update from The Carmack with the announcement:

Click to enlargeThe Quake 2 source code is now available for download, licensed under the GPL.

As with previous source code releases, the game data remains under the original copyright and license, and cannot be freely distributed. If you create a true total conversion, you can give (or sell) a complete package away, as long as you abide by the GPL source code license. If your projects use the original Quake 2 media, the media must come from a normal, purchased copy of the game.

I'm sure I will catch some flack about increased cheating after the source release, but there are plenty of Q2 cheats already out there, so you are already in the position of having to trust the other players to a degree. The problem is really only solvable by relying on the community to police itself, because it is a fundamentally unwinnable technical battle to make a completely cheat proof game of this type. Play with your friends.

Star Wars Quake2 DM Test

Feb 14, 2001 9:30pm CST tags: LucasArts, Quake 2
A DM test of the Star Wars Quake TC has been released. This is a mod for Quake 2, and has been in development for a pretty long time. This DM test is a 25mb download and focuses "on the core design of the TC, namely force use, saber use, and weapon use together with player movement". Here are some screenshots of this bad boy

The question of course is, will this mod go the way of other "foxed" mods such as recently the Duke to Quake project ? LucasArts is usually incredibly protective of the Star Wars property.

With the 1.27g privately released for mod makers, there have been a number of mod re-releases, and there will be more. The latest one is the Coliseum2 mod, which is like Lithium for Quake2. Over the weekend we had QBind, OSP Tourney and Reqieum. The Alliance CTF website has a new movie showing off new features from the 2.0 version that's coming out soon, compatible with 1.27g as well.
If you still need 1.17 for some servers and so you aren't using 1.27 yet, this program allows you to switch between the two. And lastly a mod that isn't yet but there are new pictures, Quake3 Rally featured on extreme-players.de.
