June NPD Sales: Prototype Tops Another Slow Month

Jul 16, 2009 5:36pm CST tags: Prototype
Overall videogame industry sales dropped 31% in June when compared to last year, as Radical's open-world title Prototype topped the North American software sales chart.
"While this is solid performance for new IP, it's a relatively modest sales figure for any game capturing the top spot for the month," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier of Prototype's roughly 600k+ sales across both platforms.

The full list of software and hardware sales follows:

  1. Prototype (Radical, 360) - 419,900 units
  2. UFC 2009 Undisputed (Yuke's Osaka, Xbox 360) - 338,300 units
  3. EA Sports Active Bundle (EA Sports, Wii) - 289,100 units
  4. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA Sports, Wii) - 272,400 units
  5. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 271,600 units... Read more

Analyst: Prototype to Beat Infamous Sales by 90 Percent, But Not on PS3

Jul 13, 2009 10:03pm CST tags: inFamous, Prototype
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich singled out the war between rival open-world action titles Infamous and Prototype in his retail sales preview today, estimating that Prototype will eventually win out over its rival by a sales margin of 90 percent.

Sucker Punch's PlayStation 3-exclusive Infamous was released on May 26, while Radical's similar, yet multiplatform title Prototype (PC, 360, PS3) launched on June 6.

Left, Prototype. Right, Infamous.
Though EEDAR estimates that Prototype will triumph overall, it also predicts that Infamous will outsell its rival by 35 percent on the PlayStation 3, a margin that may increase to 50 percent in the future.

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," concluded Divnich.

Divnich added that since EEDAR does not have data on how much it cost publisher Activision to support development of Prototype for three platforms, it is currently difficult to tell which strategy will ultimately pay out the most.

Those waiting for a deal to give Prototype a shot didn't have to wait long: Amazon's gaming deal of the day is a $20 savings on all three versions of Radical's open-world action title.

Prototype PS3 Install Glitch May Prevent Play

Jun 10, 2009 12:27pm CST tags: Prototype
Similar to the issue that plagued Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction back in 2007, those who pick up the PlayStation 3 edition of Radical's just-released super-powered action game may find themselves unable to start the game due to a bug.

The problem can crop up when users attempt to install the PlayStation 3 version, with the game sometimes telling folks that they don't have sufficient space to install the necessary files, even if they have more than enough free space.

A patch to resolve the situation is in the works, with publisher Activision advising those afflicted to "change the available space on your hard drive by 700 MB" by either adding or deleting content. "We apologize for any inconvenience," noted Activision.

The PC and Xbox 360 versions of Prototype, which also hit this week, are not affected.

InFamous Trailer Looks Suspiciously Like Prototype Mission Walkthrough

May 28, 2009 6:45pm CST tags: Prototype, Trailer
There's something odd about this walkthrough video for Sucker Punch's open world title InFamous. I'm not sure what it is. Shouldn't there be more lightning? Wasn't there lightning in this one?

Wait--hoodie spotted. Case closed. My mistake. And now, a walkthrough of the seventh mission from Radical's Prototype.

When your protagonist comes back from the dead with no recollection of how he or she got that way, it's generally a safe bet that something, how to say, sinister, is going down.

Rumor: Prototype Developer Working on Spider-Man, Bourne Veterans Get Transformers

Apr 23, 2009 12:17pm CST tags: Rumor, Activision Blizzard, Radical Entertainment, Prototype, High Moon Studios, Transformers
Citing anonymous sources, a new report from Variety's Cut Scene Blog claims that studio owner Activision Blizzard has Prototype developer Radical working on a new Spider-Man game, with High Moon, The Bourne Conspiracy folks, on Transformers.

High Moon's Transformers game won't be based on any particular movie, Variety claims, and should be expected to arrive at some point in 2010. Activision has previously announced that the game for the second movie is due this June.

As for Radical's Spider-Man, the site merely noted that the open-world wall-running exploits of Prototype are a near-perfect fit for a Spider-Man game. No release estimate was provided, with Variety doubting that this fall's Spider-Man game will be Radical's.

While Activision has yet to comment on the rumors, more Spider-Man and Transformers titles would come as no surprise for the sequel-heavy publisher, especially in the wake of the marketing leak last year that detailed 14 different Spider-Man game concepts.

Ghostbusters, Brutal Legend, More in Danger as Activision Blizzard Streamlines Vivendi Portfolio

Update 2: Developer Double Fine has chimed in on the fate of Brutal Legend, stating that the Jack Black-starring action-adventure title "is fine."

Update: Sierra has assured that Ghosbusters "will not be cancelled", but offered no further details on the title or any of the others believed to be on the chopping block.

Original Story: In the wake of the recently completed Activision Blizzard merger, the company has revealed that only five franchises from Vivendi Games' Sierra portfolio will be making the transition to the newly-formed company's publishing operations.

Endangered titles Brutal Legend (Left) and Ghostbusters (Right).

The titles and franchises confirmed to make the leap include Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Radical Entertainment's Prototype and a yet unannounced title. Those remaining titles formerly slated for publishing deals with Vivendi Games, however, could now be without publishers.

"The only [Vivendi] franchises that Activision Publishing will release are based on Crash Bandicoot, Ice Age and Spyro, as well as Prototype and one other game that has not yet been announced," an Activision Blizzard representative told GameSpot. "We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

The remaining Vivendi Games portfolio includes Double Fine's Brutal Legend, Terminal Reality's and Red Fly's Ghostbusters, A2M's Wet, Starbreeze Studios'... Read more
