Prey Q&A

May 11, 2005 5:27pm CST tags: 3D Realms, Prey
GameSpot has gone live with a Prey Q&A, talking to Scott Miller of 3D Realms and Timothy Gerritsen and Chris Rhinehart of Human Head Studios about this sci-fi shooter. Questions are about the decision to revive the project, using Human Head as the developer, the storyline, the game world, gameplay elements, the singleplayer & multiplayer as well as engine technology.
Portals were the first thing we focused on. The original Prey made this a prominent feature, and we believed no reintroduction of Prey would be possible without portals featuring prominently in our game. At their simplest level, they are openings from one area of space to another. They are fully dynamic, meaning they can be placed at any orientation and on moving objects. They can even have conflicting physical characteristics (meaning on your side of the portal, gravity is up, while on the other side, it is down). There's so much more to the portals than that, though. We can use them in an obvious fashion--a tear in space appears from which monsters come jumping out of--or we can use them in a way that the player doesn't notice them at all until he or she realizes that something isn't quite the same. Then there's the mind-blowing, messing-with-the-laws-of physics way of using them to create environments that just can't exist in our world.

Prey Announcement

Apr 26, 2005 9:16am CST tags: id Software, 3D Realms, 2K Games, Prey
2K Games sends along a press release officially announcing the return of Prey. As we previously reported the game is in development at Human Head Studios, and powered by the DOOM 3 engine. The press release offers no details on the game, you'll have to check out the June issue of PC Gamer (link goes to cover showing an in-game screenshot) to find out more. A release year is mentioned in the announcement though: 2006. Prey will ship on PC and "a next-generation console system".
"The initial concept for Prey had been incubating for a while, waiting for the right opportunity to come along," said George Broussard, President of 3D Realms. "We jumped at the chance to create this game with a talented developer like Human Head Studios and next-generation technology like the Doom 3 engine."
Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms, added, "Prey is special for many reasons, including several new and original gameplay features and a tightly integrated story that packs an emotional punch, unlike other first person shooters."
"Our collaboration with 3D Realms has been enormously rewarding," added Timothy Gerritsen, CEO of Human Head Studios. With their help, Prey is sure to breathe new life into the first person shooter genre with a compelling story, innovative gameplay mechanics and dazzling imagery, which is powered by our significantly enhanced version of id Software's original Doom 3 engine."

Prey.com Update

"Evil draws near. From beyond the veil of the world you understand. You cannot turn your back on your heritage any longer. From it you will draw strength. All your life you have rejected the ways of your ancestors. The beliefs of your people. But now you must embrace them, if you are to survive." is the latest from Prey.com, again as a hidden message in the source code. What does it all mean? We'll know soon.

Prey Back From The Dead

Apr 15, 2005 4:50pm CST tags: 3D Realms, Prey
At first glance looking like a domain squatter page, a visit to Prey.com will actually show you a very brief Flash animation with the tag line "Earth's Savior Doesn't Want The Job". A quick WHOIS reveals the domain is owned by Take 2 Games, and a view source on the page shows a line of binary code. Translated, it says "Hiding things in the source code is so 20th century. If you're looking for more info: PC Gamer. June issue. Worldwide debut". So it looks like the rumors were right, Prey is back in development, and we'll be hearing about it very soon. Update: Prey forums are now available at the 3D Realms website. In one of the posts there George Broussard confirms Human Head Studios (Rune, Dead Man's Hand) is developing the game.

Prey to be Re-Revealed at E3

Apr 05, 2005 12:18pm CST tags: 3D Realms, Prey, E3
CNN/Money's Chris Morris posted an E3 preview article in which he mentioned that the oft-delayed and eventually canceled Prey will resurface at this year's expo. 3D Realms were the original developers behind the game but it's now rumored that Human Head has been handling Prey, which is now being built using the DOOM 3 engine. Take-Two Interactive would likely publish the title.

Prey has been around for quite some time, having a showing back in 1997. The plot centered around a Native American who fought against invading alien forces, but Morris could not confirm if the story is the same, vaguely similar, or vastly different. One fan took the time to create a timeline of the game. We'll know soon as E3 is barely over a month away.

Prey Lives..Again?

From the rumor department at Evil Avatar comes word that the infamous Prey project from 3D Realms is in fact still alive. Supposedly Human Head Studios (Rune) is now working on the title, using the new DOOM tech no less. The game had it's fair share of problems when it was in development at 3DR several years ago, and was cancelled. Here's a Prey FAQ from back in 1998 if you don't remember/know what this game was supposed to be all about. We couldn't get official confirmation or denial from 3D Realms.
