Patapon Review

Feb 27, 2008 3:34am CST tags: Patapon, Review
A hybrid rhythm-based, real-time tactical title, Patapon (PSP) is an odd beast. Aaron Linde takes a look at this bizarre mish-mash of a game, and comes away with a rather sadistic looking grin on his face. Check out his full review.
When you think about it, there's something vaguely sinister about a game like Patapon; a game in which you, as god of a humble people, lead your followers on a crusade back to their stolen homeland. Your people are small, spherical imps, and instead of whispering dogma into the ears of the mad, you simply pound your drums. But beneath this bizarre tableau of tribal warfare, rhythm and action lies one of the most compelling, addictive games released on the PSP to date. Read more..

Patapon Hits PSP Feb. 26, Priced at $19.99

Interlink's quirky, militaristic rhythm game Patapon (PSP) will run gamers an easy $19.99 for its North American release. The price drop was announced by SCEA software marketing director Jeff Reese via a post on the Playstation Blog.

"'Innovation' is a double-edged sword," Reese wrote. "The gaming landscape is littered with cult-favorites that buck the trends and try a completely different approach, but have trouble finding a broad audience."

Reese explained that while the $20 pricepoint is typically reserved for the Greatest Hits line, the genre-bending nature of Patapon needed a little extra incentive to attract a wider audience on its February 26 release.

In 2004, Namco's Katamari Damacy (PS2) was released to North American audiences at $20 and was met with critical acclaim and brisk sales, prompting a gradual boost in MSRP for its sequels. Many developers have since tried to capture this brand of success by releasing "quirky" games at bargain prices, though few have caught on with such a wide audience as the Katamari series.

Sony has released several new screens for its upcoming rhythm action war game Patapon (PSP). The title retails in the U.S. sometime this February.

The game requires players to command their army of Patapons with timed button presses simulating the war cadence of a military percussionist. The screens show off some of game's large fantastical bosses as depicted by French pop artist Rolito.

Previously announced with only a Japanese release date, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio's rhythm action game Patapon (PSP) will receive a localization treatment from SCEA and see a North American release. The game will hit stores in February 2008.

Players command their army of Patapons using timed button presses to simulate drum beats. With a squadron of tiny creatures in tow--including archers, infantry, and cavalry--the player must use drum commands to defeat legions of evildoers.

Patapon features the stylized artwork of French pop artist Rolito, whose works can be seen online at Rolitoland.
