PSP Go UMD Game Transfer Program Plans Scrapped

Sep 25, 2009 9:18am CST tags: PSP Go
Update: North American PSP owners will not be treated to the same three free PSP Go games offer as Europe, a Sony America spokesman has told GamesIndustry.biz.

Original: Sony has pulled the plug on its once-planned program to grant PSP Go owners digital copies of games they own on UMD, a representative told Kotaku.

"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program," said the Sony spokesperson, "but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time."

The PSP Go eschews the UMD physical format of earlier models in favour of digital downloads. The handled arrives in North America and Europe on October 1 for $250 and 249 Euros respectively, with a smaller screen but 43% lighter than the PSP-3000.

Sony announced yesterday that European PSP owners will be able to download three PSP Go games for free from a choice of seventeen including Wipeout Pure, Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, LocoRoco and Patapon, but no such program has yet been confirmed for North America.

Sony Bundles Old PSPs with Gran Turismo for $200

For those uninterested in the upcoming PSP Go, Sony will soon be bundling the older PSP-3000 with Polyphony's upcoming Gran Turismo PSP for a limited time.

The bundle will cost $200, be released on October 20, and include the following:

  • Mystic Silver PSP-3000
  • Gran Turismo PSP game on UMD
  • PlayStation Network voucher for exclusive white Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
  • 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
  • PlayStation Network downloadable movie voucher -- title TBD
  • Sony Music Pass voucher good for 10 downloadable songs -- U.S. residents only
The lighter, download-only PSP Go will debut on October 1 for $250. Gran Turismo PSP is hitting the same day for $40--meaning that those potential buyers that don't mind a 20 day wait for old technology will save around $90 on the Limited Edition bundle.

Sony today revealed more about its "snackable gaming" initiative for the PSP, which will see a myriad of "low cost" downloadable games released under the "mini" banner.

The "minis" portion of the online PlayStation Store will premiere alongside the PSP go on October 1, with a selection of 15 launch titles and "more than 50" due by the year's end. Specific prices were not provided, and each will weigh in at no more than 100MB.

Among the titles highlighted in the "mini" storefront announcement were Hero of Sparta and MiniGore--both presumably ported from their iPhone iterations--along with Tetris, Burn Zombie Burn, Flexis, Sudoku, Puzzle Scape, BreakQuest and MelodyBloxx.

Persona PSP Getting Simultaneous Retail, Downloadable Release

The enhanced PSP remake of demonic RPG Shin Megami Tensei: Persona will be released as a digital download through the PlayStation Network on September 22, the same day the physical version hits retail, publisher Atlus announced today.
"All of you first adopters of the upcoming PSPgo System can christen your new handheld with a quality RPG experience," the company said of the digital release. The PSPgo, which can only play downloaded games, hits North America on October 1 at $250.

Of course, those with regular old PSPs will also be able to obtain and play the game through digital download, memory stick space permitting, though they'll be missing out of the bonus two-disc soundtrack that's bundled with the physical UMD edition.

PSP To Receive App Store-Style 'Snackable Content'

Jul 15, 2009 10:50am CST tags: PSP, PSP Go, PlayStation Store, Sony
Sony plans to kick off a 'snackable content' initiative for the PSP with a special section of the PlayStation Store, SCEE head of developer relations Zeno Colaco told Develop.

"This initiative is about bringing the lighter, lower barrier content to the PSP that has been so successful in other categories," Colaco said. The strategy will see over fifty studios--and counting--developing low-cost titles with "instant gratification."

"Part of that 'snackability'... is because you can deliver the content over WiFi super-fast," the Sony veteran explained. "We're making games that are just 20MB each, that's less than a minute to download - instant gratification, snackable content."

The move is no doubt spurred on by the success of Apple's iTunes App Store for its iPhone and iPod Touch, which offers thousands of games including titles from such popular franchises as Mass Effect, Doom, Worms and, of course, Peggle.

The snackable content for the PSP and upcoming download-only PSP Go will be sold in a specially-branded separate section of the PlayStation Store, hoping to reach "an audience that is changing how it consumes entertainment and applications."

LucasArts Teases iPhone Ports of Classics

Jul 06, 2009 1:25pm CST tags: LucasArts, iPhone, PSP Go
With LucasArts beginning to embrace digital distribution and its library of beloved classics, the studio once known for Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max: Hit the Road, Monkey Island, Full Throttle and others has suggested that iPhone ports may be on the way.

"On iPhone, you know Apple's policy that we can't talk about a release until it's ready to release," LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez told Joystiq when asked about iPhone and iPod Touch editions of older titles. "But it would make sense that we would do something like that if we were to go in that direction ... wink wink, nod, nod."

Rodriguez further noted that LucasArts' Singapore branch, "which does the majority of our handheld titles," is playing with the PSP Go and "seeing what we can do [there]."

PSP Go Battery Life 'Equivalent' to Current PSP: Around 3 to 6 Hours of Gameplay

Jun 12, 2009 11:03am CST tags: PSP Go
Though the upcoming PSP Go does away with the battery-sucking UMD drive of previous PSP models, Sony has confirmed that the fall-due hardware redesign will not offer any substantial improvements in terms of battery life.

"We have adopted an embedded battery to realise a smaller and lighter PSP system," Sony product manager Adam Grant explained on the European PlayStation.Blog.

"The battery life is equivalent with the current models meaning approximately 3 to 6 hours for gameplays and approximately 3 to 5 hours for playing back videos."

Grant also reaffirmed that Sony is indeed planning a goodwill program for those that own physical UMD-based games, which aren't compatible with the PSP Go, and touched on some of the new features found in the download-only device... Read more

Sony Planning UMD to PSP Go Game Transfer

Jun 05, 2009 3:54pm CST tags: PSP Go
Sony is planning a system which will allow owners of physical UMD-based PSP games to receive digital copies for play on the download-only PSP Go, according to Gizmodo.

"We're in the midst of putting together a good will program," director of hardware marketing John Koller told the site, "A short term good-will program that would continue for years afterward," though he revealed very little of what it will entail.

Koller likened the program to the Portable Copy system that allows the download of Blu-ray movies onto the PSP--but he says users will not be ripping their UMDs.

Koller mentioned that Sony is "looking at what kind of games will be offered," suggesting that not all games will be available for transfer from UMD onto the PSP Go.
