Shack GeForce256 Benchmarks

Oct 09, 1999 8:43am CST tags: Q3Test, NVidia
Well, as I mentioned yesterday afternoon before I flew home I've finally gotten my hands on a NVidia GeForce256 card. I'll be spending the weekend benchmarking the card and have already started to do a bit of that before the need to pass out has overtaken me. I've made a couple of interesting discoveries already which won't interest you guys a whole lot aside from making my benchmarks more accurate than I believe most others have been. I'll have the completed GeForce article ready to roll tomorrow evening but I wanted to give you guys a taste of the benchmarks I've come up with:

System: Athlon 600mhz, 256megs pc133 ram.
Settings: High Quality, no sound.
Game: Q3Test v1.08
Creative TNT2Ultra @ 800x600 = 60.3fps
NVidia GeForce256 @ 800x600 = 80.4fps

Very interesting yes? I'll have all of the other resolutions covered, as well as several other cpus included in the benchmarks come tomorrow night (hopefully) for you guys. Oh yeah, and NVidia sent me some email I'll post for you guys later not very happy about that post I made yesterday.

LeadTech GeForce

Oct 09, 1999 7:05am CST tags: NVidia
Saw on Sharky's that Leadtek Research Inc has announced their normal and DDR GeForce cards as well. The normal version alone costs a whooping $309 though, so thats $409 for the DDR version.

Rage Pro Does Curves

Oct 08, 1999 1:46pm CST tags: NVidia
Because those GeForce screenshots with the curves turned up amused me so much this morning I decided to take a couple of shots on my laptop Rage Pro LT with super duper curve detail! Have a look at [shot1] and [shot2]. That's right folks, a Rage Pro LT supports higher curve detail than your current video card!

Just so you guys know, they used the r_subdivisions 0 console command. I've actually got a GeForce card waiting for me when I get home tonight. I'll put the card through it's paces on a p2-450, p3-550, and athlon600 over the weekend.

GeForce Q3 Shots

Oct 08, 1999 1:06pm CST tags: Q3Test, NVidia
One of the most amusing PR moves by NVidia I've seen so far. Someone at the office discovered the r_subdivisions console command in Q3Test and now they claim GeForcemakes it better. Just look at the shots!

GeForce Article

Ace's Hardware has posted " A Long Look at the GeForce 256", an article looking at NVidia's latest. Not so much feature description, but rather answering questions on what exactly it can do.

Why GeForce Benchmarks Suck?

Oct 06, 1999 1:38pm CST tags: NVidia
This is a bit of an explanation of why the GeForce benchmarks have been so dissapointing lately. It seems according to the Glaze3D guys (famous for that 300fps Quake3 claim)that the advertised 480mpix/sec throughput of the card will only occur with DDR memory. Thanks VE Check it:

To my understanding, the fillrate number of 480Mpixel/sec nVidia announced for GeForce is only achieved with DoubleDataRate memory (DDR) which is not very well available at the moment. And SDRAM memory gives only half of the bandwidth. So, the first cards I've seen announced like Creatives etc, all use SDRAM. Which means the fillrate is 240Mpix/sec.

While on that topic, Eric over at FastGraphics spotted some new NVidia cards in the latest drivers. nVidia Riva TNT2 Pro, nVidia Quadro and nVidia Crush.

TNT 334 Drivers

If you grabbed those new TNT2 detonator drivers (v334) from Riva3D the other day you probably want to grab this new reg key entry that should help you play with some of the options.

NVidia Interview

Sep 30, 1999 5:22pm CST tags: NVidia, Interview
I spotted this NVidia interview at Billy's place on BJorn3D chatting with the VP of software from NVidia. Of course the GeForce benchmarks that have been leaking out recently havent exactly been very impressive though. Here is a bit of what the man had to say:

GeForce should have the fastest fillrate of any shipping product this year. As for hardware T&L, I don't know about you but I'm tired of my characters in games not having enough polygons to give me a realistic image. Think if we could build games that put as much geometry into the faces and expressions of characters as they do in just a few anatomical features of characters like Lara Croft.

Nvidia Q&A

Sep 30, 1999 4:45am CST tags: Hardware (PC only), NVidia
3DGPU has a short Q&A with NVIDIA's Derek Perez on the 8 light limit and lightmap vs. vertex lighting on the GeForce 256 chipset. Check it.

GeForce256 Benchmarks

Sep 27, 1999 8:20pm CST tags: NVidia
Just when you thought NVidia didnt want benchmarks of the GeForce256 getting out, GameCenter releasees their GeForce256 preview which features just that, benchmarks. Check out these numbers from a P3-600:

GeForce TNT2U
Quake III Test Demo 1 640 by 480, 16-bit 82.6 81.1
Quake III Test Demo 1 640 by 480, 32-bit 79.6 77.9
Quake III Test Demo 1 1,024 by 768, 16-bit 70.2 47.5
Quake III Test Demo 1 1,024 by 768, 32-bit 45.5 38

Here is a link to those previous benchmarks that came out from the 3DHardware.net article that have been pulled since then.

IDF Report & GeForce

Sep 27, 1999 7:27pm CST tags: NVidia
GameSpot has posted their Intel Developers report, with updates on the likes of the GeForce 256 and Savage2000. They also interview 3dfx's Scott Sellers and nVidia's Dan Vivoli. Also, 3DHardware.net has posted part2 of their GeForce256 feature which gives all the details you could ask for on the Creative Labs NVidia board. They got in some hot water over those benchmarks they posted but they still give out everything else. Here is a bit on those benchmarks:

Whenever T&L gets enabled in Quake III Test, we can start doing some real benchmarks and enabling all these extra triangles won't hurt the GeForce 256 one bit. Even now, with ALPHA drivers, the performance drop is very, very low. Besides, I assume that if Carmack adds those extra settings in the final Quake III, the results that these console commands give would surely be included in those extra settings.

Taiwan Quake Aftermath

Sep 27, 1999 12:34pm CST tags: NVidia
News.com is reporting that the graphics card makers have been pretty well screwed by this Earthquake in Taiwan. TSMC (the fab for both nVidia and 3dfx) is now back up to 70% of production, but we don't know how this is all allocated. How will this affect GeForce's on the shelves for Christmastime? Will this shortage drive up their prices past $300? We'll have to wait and see.

GeForce256 Article

This article over on GamePC takes a pretty good look at the GeForce256 which has been under a little bit of fire recently with those benchmarks that came out.
