Mortal Kombat Team Looking to Bail on Midway?

Apr 03, 2009 5:53pm CST tags: Midway, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
The internal Midway team responsible for development on the Mortal Kombat series is looking to leave the company, according to a Kotaku report citing anonymous sources.

The report says the team, which most recently developed Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, is currently in talks with various publishers in an effort to relocate.

Sources indicated that the search for a new home began after Midway failed to pay out bonuses for meeting Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe sales targets. Midway representatives claim that the unsecured creditors committee is holding up the payments.

Midway announced earlier this month a plan to sell the Mortal Kombat franchise. At the time, Midway had proposed an incentive plan to give bonuses to remaining employees, while admitting it would be unable to reimburse ex-employees for unused paid time off.

Hidden away within a press release regarding shipment figures for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the first official word that Midway is planning another series entry.

"We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future," said franchise co-creator Ed Boon.

While the publisher did not disclose how many copies of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe have actually been sold, it did note that "approximately 1.8 million units" of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 fighter have been shipped since its November 16 release.

Midway is currently $240 million in debt and facing possible bankruptcy in February.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Censored for Teen Rating

Oct 27, 2008 9:26am CST tags: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Censorship
With Midway Chicago's magical fighter Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (PS3, 360) nearing its November 16 release, the game has seen some of its more violent fatalities scaled back in order to attain the lucrative T for Teen rating from the ESRB.

"At least three" revisions have been submitted to the ESRB, creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon told Kotaku, with The Joker and Kitana's fatalites tweaked.

In previous builds of the game, The Joker's fatality saw the famed villain shoot a fake gun, complete with "Bang!" flag, before pulling out a real gun and shot them in the head. Now, players will only see the fake gun bit, with the real headshot occurring offscreen.

As for Kitana, the ESRB took issue with a fatality that saw her jab razor-sharp fans through an opponent's forehead and torso. In order to be T-complaint, the head injury portion was modified, with both fans now entering an opponent's mid-section.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe: Beat Up Batman

Jul 17, 2008 10:09pm CST tags: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, E3 2008, Preview
The story of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe revolves around some kind of cataclysmic event, a major rift in space and time which causes Batman to run into Scorpion at the grocery store, and then they fight, but Batman doesn't kill him because he has to bring him to justice.

Alright, that may not be entirely accurate, but that's not the important thing. The important thing is that Mortal Kombat vs. DC isn't terrible. Despite the Teen rating, there are still fatalities, and plenty of blood, and some relatively interesting moves. Watching the Flash repeatedly zip from one side of the screen to the other, juggling an enemy with punches, was sort of funny. That's what I would do if I was the Flash.

On the MK side of things, Scorpion looks like Scorpion, and still uses the most awkwardly infamous video game weapon known to man, like the Gordon's Fisherman from hell. Sonya does her thing, kicking and punching and being the only human of the bunch. Mortal Kombat is so weird.

Much has been made about the DC hero characters' lack of fatalities. As Batman, a Midway rep demonstrated a "brutality," which consisted of the Dark Knight pounding Sub-Zero into the pavement, up to his ears in cement. Even though Batman didn't kill him, I knew he was being evil, because his Bat-eyes were glowing yellow.... Read more
