Sierra Entertainment today announced that more F.E.A.R. is on the way to PC and Xbox 360 systems.

PC gamers will get F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, a new expansion pack for Monolith's 2005 action thriller. The campaign features a parallel story allowing players to take the role of a different F.E.A.R. soldier, battling new enemies that the other team never saw.

Meanwhile, F.E.A.R. Files for the Xbox 360 will include F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, released for the PC last year, as well as the new Perseus Mandate expansion pack.

Both games will be released this fall.

Name the Game to Follow F.E.A.R.

Alma! From F.E.A.R.! Woo! Developer Monolith Productions needs a name for the sequel to its 2005 shooter F.E.A.R., and it is soliciting gamer suggestions at its Name Your Fear website. As reported last year, Monolith and parent company Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment own the rights to the F.E.A.R. universe, but not to the name itself. While original F.E.A.R. publisher Vivendi Games plans to publish its own non-Monolith-developed sequel using the actual branding, Monolith will essentially be developing a true sequel in all but name.

The site features the Games for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 logos, suggesting a multiplatform approach. At the time that Monolith's sequel was initially announced, the company stated its intention to lead development ... Read more

  • Nintendo acquires Monolith Soft (the other Monolith)

    [ps2] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [gba]

Namco Bandai Games' Japanese division announced this week that Nintendo has acquired controlling interest the formerly Namco Bandai-owned development studio Monolith Soft. With 80% Nintendo ownership, Monolith Soft will essentially become a first party Nintendo development studio; Namco Bandai will retain a 16% stake in the company.

Nintendo's acquisition of Monolith Soft is likely in large part intended to address the overall low number of roleplaying games on Nintendo home systems. Monolith Soft is responsible for the PlayStation 2 series Xenosaga, a followup to Square's PlayStation RPG Xenogears, as well as the Baten Kaitos RPG series on GameCube. At one point, Namco announced a Nintendo DS version of Baten Kaitos, but it is currently thought to have been cancelled. Monolith Soft is the developer of the upcoming Wii exclusive armageddon-tinged action game Disaster: Day of Crisis.

  • Gears of War film treatment leaked

    [xbox360]

Movie news site LatinoReview.com further cemented its odd reputation as the most prolific video game movie script-leaking organization around with its preview of Stuart Beattie's treatment for the upcoming Gears of War film. Reader "Gearhead" contributed the report detailing approximately the first third of the treatment, which apparently begins prior to the events of Epic's Gears of War (X360) game. No director has yet been attached to the Gears of War movie project.

In addition to acting as a screenwriter on Michael Mann's Collateral and the upcoming The Punisher 2, Beattie is also a writer on two in-development video game films: Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run and Splinter Cell: The Movie.

  • Nintendo developing 45 for Wii, 79 for DS; Kojima likes Smash

    [wii] [ds]

Satoru IwataSpeaking at a Japanese press conference, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that his company is currently developing 45 games for Wii as well as 79 games for Nintendo DS, reports financial publication Bloomberg. Those figures almost certainly refer both to internally developed games as well as Nintendo-published titles developed by second- or third-party studios.

Both systems have been light on Nintendo-developed games in recent months, with highly anticipated titles on both systems--such as The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on DS and Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Retro's Metroid Prime 3: Corruption--having been delayed past their original projected release periods. According to Iwata, the company's next round of first-party releases will ship towards the end of this summer.

Allaying fears that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy have been pushed out of 2007, Iwata confirmed that both games are set for release this summer or fall. He also claimed that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption's pointer-based control is being "rated close to the keyboard and mouse control that's the standard for PC games" by its testers.

On the topic of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the game is apparently reaching a fairly complete stage of production. During the recent Snake vs. Zombie event hosted by Killer7 developer Grasshopper Manufacture, Smash Bros. series designer Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance to discuss with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima the appearance of Solid Snake as a playable character in Brawl. According to Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton on a recent episode of the Kojima Productions Report, Kojima played the game and stated that it "already feels very complete, it's already a lot of fun." Kojima apparently claimed that Nintendo "could put it out now, and it would sell millions of copies."

PC Gaming Looks to Rebound in 2007

EnemyWith sales increasing and growing support from the development community, PC gaming may at long last be on the rise, The New York Times reports. According to the NPD Group, sales of PC games across the first two months of this year were up 48% over those of last year, from $136.9 million to $203 million. Though these figures were no doubt aided by Blizzard's World of Warcraft and the expansion pack released this January, which has since sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide, a series of long-awaited PC releases look to make 2007 a big year for PC gaming, such as EA LA's Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars in March and Splash Damage's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (preview) later this year.

The two-month increase in PC game sales represents a substantial boost for a market that has seen little growth in recent years. PC software sales fell 14% in 2005, from $1.1 billion to $953 million, and in 2006, the market only saw a 1% increase, from $953 million to $970. Meanwhile, home console game sales added up to $4.8 billion in 2006, with portable software sales garnering an additional $1.7 billion.

The PC is also garnering support from Japanese developers. Capcom recently announced it will be bringing former console exclusives Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Devil May Cry 4 to the PC. Traditionally seen as a console publisher, Sega has also been a major contributor to the PC market, with many of the company's recent efforts such as Sumo Digital's OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast, Monolith's Condemned: Criminal Origins, and Sonic Team's Phantasy Star Universe, ending up on the PC. Furthermore, Sega has branched out into the PC gaming sector with its acquisitions of Total War developer The Creative Assembly and sports management developer Sports Interactive.

Another factor in the proposed growth of the PC market is Microsoft's recent Games for Windows initiative, which seeks to simplify the platform by offering standardizing support for features such as controllers, online voice chat and friend lists. Aspects of Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system also seek to eliminate many of the hassle associated with PC gaming. System score provides users with a rating of their machine's capability, and with future Games for Windows titles mandated to list their required system scores on the package, this allows potential buyers to easily determine if a game will run on their machine. Another new feature available to developers under Vista is the ability to forgo the lengthy installation process often required before playing a PC game for the first time. For example, Hired Gun's upcoming PC version of Bungie's Halo 2 (preview) can be played from the moment the disc is inserted and installs in the background during gameplay.

When questioned, industry professionals were split on the console-PC debate. "The PC is, no doubt, the gaming platform of choice," claimed International Cyber Marketing senior VP and general manager Michael Arzt. "Everybody needs a computer," he noted. "Not everyone wants to lay down the money for a console and a big-screen television to make it work."

"I think with three consoles out in the last couple of years, it's natural to focus on consoles," stated id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead. "There's a lot of excitement, a lot of marketing dollars and a lot of hype for consoles. We don't have any champion of the PC game business to step in and leverage those sorts of marketing dollars." Back in March, Hollenshead attributed his company's decision to pursue console versions of its games on losses stemming from PC piracy.

CPL Details 2007 World Tour

Apr 23, 2007 12:56pm CST tags: CPL, Industry News: PC & Console, Sierra Entertainment, Monolith
Angel MunozThe Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) has announced details on the 2007 CPL World Tour. Spanning four continents--Europe, Asia, South America, North America--across its eight month duration, the competition will start with a three day event in Verona, Italy beginning May 11. Future dates and locations have yet to be announced, though the final event is tentatively planned for New York City.

A total of $500,000 will be offered throughout the various tour events, with $300,000 of that representing the grand prize.

Sponsored by Sierra Entertainment, the 2007 CPL World Tour will focus on the competitive play of two Sierra-published titles: the Xbox 360 version of Monolith Productions' FPS F.E.A.R. and Massive Entertainment's alternate history PC RTS World in Conflict. F.E.A.R. originally hit the PC in late 2005, followed by the October 2006 Xbox 360 iteration and a PlayStation 3 edition due this week, both handled by Day 1 Studios. Meanwhile, the PC-based World in Conflict is slated for a Q3 2007 release.

"The CPL is proud once again to break new ground in e-sports by partnering with Sierra Entertainment and selecting both F.E.A.R. and World in Conflict as our featured games for this year's four-continent $500,000 World Tour," noted CPL founder and president Angel Munoz. "We are making a long-term commitment to these exciting and highly competitive new games and are working closely with Sierra to continue to raise the profile of professional video gaming and to enable increasing numbers of gamers to enter the professional ranks."

Despite a variety of professional gaming organizations, such as the CPL and Professional Gamers League of America, the majority of the worldwide competitive gaming circuit has yet to obtain the level of popularity such events garner in South Korea, where Starcraft tournaments can fill stadiums with tens of thousands of attendees.

Into the Pixel 2007 Exhibit Taking Submissions

Apr 11, 2007 2:22pm CST tags: Industry News: PC & Console, Monolith
Into the Pixel 2006 God of War artwork It has been known for several weeks that the annual video game artwork exhibit Into the Pixel would be returning for another round, and this week the show's organizers announced that they are currently accepting submissions for the 2007 collection. Video game artists may send in their work for consideration via the organization's official site. Pieces must be concept, character, or environmental artwork from games that have been published or are confirmed for publishing. Marketing-related or promotional artwork is not accepted, and the artwork must have been created by developers working on the game in question. Submissions will be accepted until May 4, 2007.

Pictured at left is artwork by Eduardo Gonzalez from SCE Santa Monica's God of War (PS2), featured in last year's exhibit. More selections from Into the Pixel 2006 are available in the linked gallery.

This year's pieces will be chosen by a nine-member jury made up of figures from the gaming and fine art worlds, including Gas Powered Games founder Chris Taylor, prolific game concept artist Craig Mullins, Monolith founder and HDFILMS president Jason Hall, Getty Research Institute curator Louis Marchesano, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator Kevin Salatino.

"The constant cross-pollination between the entertainment world and the art world cannot be ignored. Understanding and explaining where one stops and the other begins is where the real difficulty lies, though why, ultimately, does it matter?" commented Salatino. "I predict that as more and more artistic talent is absorbed into the game world, the cross-flow from discipline to discipline will become ever more invasive and imperceptible."

This year's Into the Pixel exhibit will premiere at the newly scaled down E3 Business & Media Summit to be held in Santa Monica, California from July 11-13, 2007. It will later be shown to the public during IDG's E for All consumer-level event scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, California from October 18-21.

  • Mario & Sonic match up, but not to Smash (yet)

    [wii] [ds]

For the first time in the nearly 16 years the two video game icons have battling it out on the sales charts and in the hearts and minds of crazed gamers, Mario and Sonic will match up within one game. Nintendo and Sega today jointly announced that their mascots will appear in the upcoming sports game collection Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, to be developed by Sega and overseen by Nintendo design head Shigeru Miyamoto. It will be licensed by the International Olympic Committee and will bear the branding of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

In the works for Wii and Nintendo DS, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is set to feature numerous Olympic sports including the 100m dash, table tennis, and swimming, set in locations drawn from the upcoming Beijing-hosted event. Other Nintendo and Sega characters confirmed to be playable in the game are Luigi, Yoshi, Tails, and Knuckles. The only media currently available is this piece of artwork.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," said Miyamoto. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

Some have taken today's news as further evidence that Sonic is likely to appear in Nintendo's upcoming Wii fighter extravaganza, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Konami character Solid Snake was one of the first announced fighters to join the previously Nintendo-exclusive roster for Brawl, and when previously asked about Sonic's potential inclusion, Miyamoto has indicated his own personal interest. Sega and Nintendo have grown increasingly close in recent years, with several Sega multiplatform franchises selling particularly well on Nintendo systems, and Sega executives having commented that Nintendo hardware is the most fitting place for Sega's brands since the company's exit from the hardware market.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is set to ship for Wii and Nintendo DS this holiday season. It will be released by Sega in North America and Europe, and by Nintendo in Japan.

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [psp] [gba]

Having held on to the video game rights to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings adaptation for the past six years, Electronic Arts announced that it has renewed its license with New Line Cinema. The Lord of the Rings movie games will stay the domain of EA through 2008. EA also holds a license from the Saul Zaentz Company via Tolkien Enterprises to develop games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's literary trilogy. Those rights had previously been held by Vivendi Universal until EA acquired them in 2005.

"We have a long history of making great games with EA and are thrilled to extend our longstanding relationship," said David Imhoff of New Line Cinema. "We look forward to working closely with EA to create even more compelling Lord of the Rings adventures in the future."

Along with the renewal announcement, Electronic Arts revealed that it has an "all-new" game based on The Lord of the Rings in development that it plans to ship in 2008. No details were given.

Earlier this year, we reported that EA's ambitious The Lord of the Rings, The White Council had been quietly dissolved, with producer Steve Gray no longer at EA. EA eventually stated that the game was put on indefinite hold, and has yet to release any further information.

  • Koei reveals oddly named RPG for Wii

    [wii]

Koei, the prolific publisher best known for releasing Omega Force's Dynasty Warriors series and its spinoffs, today announced Opoona, an original RPG in the works for Wii. Developed by Japanese studio ArtePiazza, the science-fiction game tells the story of Opoona, a boy who must make a life on a new planet in search of his missing brother and sister, after his parents are hospitalized with critical injuries. Opoona appears to have nonlinear elements, with the player able to explore the planet Landroll and build a life there; Koei describes it as a "lifestyle RPG."

Opoona's battle system uses a control method by which players can set the trajectory of projectiles using the Wii's nunchuk. Apparently, the game will feature "one-thumb control" allowing players to perform all actions using only the nunchuk component of the controller.

Heading up direction of the game is Sachiko Sugimura, who has worked on numerous Dragon Quest titles. Music is being composed by Final Fantasy XII (PS2) composer Hitoshi Sakamoto. Shintaro Majima is providing the game's art direction; Koei sent along several pieces of Opoona's character artwork.

Koei expects to release Opoona in Japan this summer. No North American release has yet been announced.

  • Rockstar Leeds steals Beaterator for PSP

    [psp]

Two years ago, Rockstar Games released a web-based music sequencer called Beaterator. Reception to the Flash application was apparently positive enough to create a commercial version, as today the publisher announced that Rockstar Leeds, the studio behind the two Grand Theft Auto PSP games, will be bringing Beaterator to Sony's portable system. Well-known producer Timbaland has been enlisted to contribute to the project in some way, but in true Rockstar style, today's press release was rather light on details.

"I've always been a huge fan of Rockstar and love playing their games," said Timbaland. "I'm thrilled to be partnering with them and making music for Beaterator. I cannot wait to get this in the hands of our fans!"

Like its online counterpart, the PSP version of Beaterator will contain loop-making and music mixing capabilities. Bringing it more in line with other portable titles, it will also feature challenge modes and a suite of mini-games.

Rockstar Games plans to ship Rockstar Leeds' Beaterator for PSP this summer.

  • Gamers condemned to more Condemned?

    [xbox360]

Monolith Productions' well received Xbox 360 launch title Condemned: Criminal Origins performed well enough to get a PC port last year, and it looks like it may also have been successful enough to garner a sequel. Internet detectives have spotted Play.com product listing indicating the existence of a game called "Condemned 2." The only product-related details other than the title is a brief description: "A superb sequel of brilliantly brutal bloody hand to hand brawling..."

UK-based Play.com claims Condemned 2 will be released on November 30, 2007. Online retailers are rarely reliable sources for release dates months in advance, so that particular bit of information should be considered rumor. Still, while Condemned publisher Sega has refused to comment on the listing, retailers do tend to be fairly accurate in identifying the simple existence of upcoming games. A sequel to Condemned is likely to be officially announced in the coming months.

  • Culdcept Saga to be told this summer

    [xbox360]

Prior to last year's E3, Namco Bandai Games slightly surprisingly announced that Culdcept Saga, Omiya Soft's Xbox 360 installment of the cult classic Culdcept franchise, would be coming to North America. Oddly, the game made no appearance at E3, but today Namco Bandai finally sent word that the game is expected to ship in North America this summer.

Like other games in the series, Culdcept Saga is a board game/card game hybrid and is frequently described as a meeting of Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly. This installment will include online support over Xbox Live.

"Namco Bandai is proud to bring such a unique concept to the Xbox Live community." said Namco Bandai executive VP Makoto Iwai. "It's the perfect blend of classic board games and modern competitive trading cards in one beautiful package!"

Today, Activision offically confirmed plans to bring the game to PS2. The port will be handled by SuperVillain Studios, which has been responsible for ports of various Tony Hawk games in the past. It will be released in North America this spring.

  • Downloadable Oblivion expansion to feature Achievements

    [xbox360]

A few days ago, the Microsoft marketing employee-run Gamerscore Blog posted an explanation of an updated Achievement and Gamerscore policy applied to Xbox 360 games. The update clarifies that all games must include 1,000 total Gamerscore points' worth of Achievements cumulatively between the base game and any free content downloads. Furthermore, developers are now able to allocate an additional 250 Gamerscore points beyond the base 1,000; these may be acquired through either free or paid downloadable content.

Today, Shacknews learned from Bethesda Softworks that its upcoming Oblivion expansion pack, The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles, will feature the full 250 points' worth of newly available Gamerscore, spread over ten Achievements. "You think it was a coincidence that this policy came out this month?" laughed Bethesda's Pete Hines, who noted that the Rockville, Maryland-based developer was a major factor in adding the new guidelines. Hines also stated that the expansion pack, which is approximately one fourth the size of the original Oblivion game, will contain over 30 hours of gameplay. Pricing for the Xbox 360 version of the pack, which will be available only through Xbox Live Marketplace, has not yet been determined, but it is likely to be roughly in line with the PC version's $29.99 price point.

Check back this week for a preview of The Shivering Isles as well as a comprehensive interview with Hines.

  • Manhunt to enrage Jack Thompson on Wii, PS2, PSP

    [ps2] [wii] [psp]

In a move sure to result in countless local news scare stories across the globe, Rockstar Games today announced that it is developing a sequel to Rockstar North's controversial 2003 action title Manhunt (PS2, Xbox, PC), which saw players control a character coerced into committing gruesome murders with frequently improvised weapons, as directed by a mysterious voice transmitted through an earpiece. Perhaps surprisingly, Manhunt 2 is coming to PlayStation 2, PSP, and Wii, the latter of which conjures up some striking control mechanics.

The PS2 and PSP versions of Manhunt 2 are being developed by new Rockstar studio Rockstar London, in collaboration with franchise creator Rockstar North. The Warriors developer Rockstar Toronto is handling the Wii version of the game. Comments made by Rockstar Games founder and executive producer Sam Houser referencing Rockstar Leeds in today's press release suggest that the PSP version may possibly be developed by Rockstar Leeds, the company responsible for the two Grand Theft Auto releases on PSP.

"With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward," said Houser in today's announcement.

Rockstar Games expects to ship Manhunt 2 for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP this summer.

  • Tekken 5 downloading to PS3 later this month

Last December, it was revealed that Namco was developing a PlayStation 3 version of its arcade fighter Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, to be offered exclusively as a download through the PlayStation Store. At the time, Namco did not announce any kind of North American release, but the game is currently available on the Japanese version of the store.

Today, Namco Bandai Games officially announced a North American localization of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which will be downloadable through the PlayStation Store as of an unspecified date later this month. It features native 1080p resolution, Arcade and Ghost Battle modes, and a Gallery mode.

  • Xbox 360 shipping with updated DVD drive?

    [xbox360]

According to the tinkerers over at Xbox-Scene, Microsoft has begun shipping Xbox 360 consoles with an improved DVD-ROM drive, helping to decrease some of the machine's infamous operating noise and potentially even improve load times. Apparently, units from November 6 and onward have started to be outfitted with a BenQ VAD6038 drive, taking the place of drives formerly provided by Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG. Not all units manufactured from that point onward feature the new drive, notes the report, but many do.

Shacknews has sent inquiries to Microsoft on the matter, but they had not been returned at time of publication.

Developed by Sumo Digital, the Xbox 360 version will display natively in the 1080p resolution standard, and will feature online multiplayer via Xbox Live.

"With the implementation of 1080p capabilities on the Xbox 360, players will experience a new level of visual intensity and athletic drama played out on the court through a wide range of varied and realistic animations and dynamic cloth physics," said Sega marketing VP Scott A. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that its senior vice president, former Monolith Productions CEO Jason Hall, has taken leave of WBIE to focus on his own production company HDFilms. A well known industry figure, Hall co-founded Monolith in 1994, and joined Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2004 when Monolith Productions became a fully owned subsidiary of the company. Monolith is known for games such as Blood, Aliens vs. Predator 2, and more recently F.E.A.R. and Condemned: Criminal Origins. Hall's new venture HDFilms will continue to strengthen its ties with Warner Bros., and Hall will remain involved with both video games and movies produced by the studio.

Succeeding Hall is Samantha Ryan, who previously succeeded Hall as Monolith CEO and will continue to fulfill that role while she serves as WBIE senior VP. Having been with Monolith since 1998, Ryan is best known in terms of her development contributions as the producer of the company's well loved No One Lives Forever franchise. In her new role she will oversee all of WBIE's games, both from first party and third party studios. She will work alongside senior VP of operations Debra Baker, reporting to president Kevin Tsujihara.

"We're extremely fortunate to have Samantha take the helm at WBIE. She has worked with us since Monolith was one of our important production studios and has continued to do so since we acquired the company. We have always been impressed with Samantha as an executive, a game developer and as a person and we anticipate this being about as seamless of a transition as one could hope for," said Tsujihara. "That being said, I want to personally thank Jason for sharing his vision in this business and literally putting Warner Bros. on the map in the game space. His creativity, enthusiasm and drive have brought us a long way in a very short amount of time and I'm pleased that he will remain an influential creative resource for us in this area."

Monolith is currently known to be developing a sequel to 2005's F.E.A.R.

  • PS3 patched to 1.5, backwards compatibility remedied

    [ps3]

PlayStation 3 owners can now download newly released version 1.50 system software, which Sony states makes a few fairly minor changes to the system's interface. Wi-fi encryption methods are now streamlined, Korean text input is supported, photos can be selected as user icons, and backup data can be deleted.

Most crucial, however--and bafflingly not mentioned on Sony's official update page--is a fix to the system's previously broken backwards compatibility feature. Prior to this fix, in an issue that seemed to stem from PS3's lack of dedicated scaling hardware, many PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games suffered from extremely low-quality scaling, introducing prominent jagged edges and artifacts and in some cases making text extremely difficult to read on many HD televisions. Now, fortunately, this graphical bug has been addressed, giving PS3 owners the ability to actually appreciate the breadth of the system's legacy game support.

  • Sony and Namco Bandai get serious about Cell with Cellius

    [ps3]

In an announcement that is still seemingly being parsed by the press, Sony and recently merged Namco Bandai Holdings are creating a new company focused on content developed for the Sony/IBM/Toshiba-developed Cell chip. With a total investment of about 100 million yen (US$822,707) between them, Namco Bandai will hold a controlling stake of 51%, with Sony taking the remaining 49%. Heading up the company (as translated by Game|Life) will be Namco Bandai's Isao Nakamura, with part time directorial duties shared between Namco Bandai VP Shin Unozawa, Sony Computer Entertainment VP Akira Sato, and Sony Computer Entertainment chairman/group CEO Ken Kutaragi.

An early Bloomberg story painted the alliance as being focused on PlayStation 3 development, but it is unclear if this is actually the case. Other reports seem to stress the Cell chip in general, which will also be used in a broad range of other consumer-level products such as mobile phones, over PlayStation 3 specifically. Furthermore, the total investment in Cellius is only a fraction of what would be required to develop a showcase PS3 game. In statements reported by the press, Sony representative Satoshi Fukuoka seemed to decline to give specific details of products in developments, but indicating that they are in the works for various entertainment devices such as PCs and mobile phones.

  • Tenchu Z coming to North America

    [xbox360]

Microsoft sent word that it will be handling North American publishing duties on K2 Interactive's Tenchu Z for Xbox 360, the latest entry in FromSoftware's long running Tenchu franchise. The game was previously released in Japan as Tenchu Senran.

Tenchu Z will feature several dozen missions requiring the player to conduct stealthy ninja activities using ninja weaponry and equipment including a grappling hook. The game features what Microsoft describes as a "stealth kill system," and also includes a character edit feature and online cooperative play.

Microsoft has not yet announced a release time frame for Tenchu Z in North America.

  • Harmonix moving past Guitar Hero

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [psp] [gba]

Last week, it became fairly clear that development of Harmonix's Guitar Hero franchise had switched over to long time Tony Hawk studio Neversoft. This week, speaking to Gamasutra, Harmonix producer Daniel Sussman confirmed that the series is out of Harmonix's hands and briefly spoke on the company's further ambitions.

"We are instead working on a different music game project, one that is a bigger and more ambitious endeavor than we felt we could pursue within the bounds of the Guitar Hero franchise," said Sussman. Prior to Guitar Hero, Harmonix was known for its original Frequency and Amplitude rhythm games for PS2, as well as several Karaoke Revolution titles for Konami. Harmonix was purchased last year by MTV.

Some pretty meaty news items in here. Sorry, guys!
  • Import shop Lik Sang closes, points finger at Sony

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [nintendo] [ds] [psp] [gba]

Yesterday, online video game import shop Lik Sang was required as the result of a Sony-initiated court case to cease exporting PSP units to European countries. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe also announced its intention to block any future importing of any of its consoles, including the as yet unreleased PlayStation 3, to Europe. Today, Lik Sang announced that it has gone out of business as a result of the legal actions and will no longer accept orders. The company has refunded the cost of all pending orders to consumers, and is working on completing any incomplete repair or return transactions. Lik Sang cites legal costs incurred as a result of "multiple Sony lawsuits" as the reason for the closure.

The company disputes Sony's claims that the reason for its blocking of imports to Europe is to "protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards." Lik Sang disputed this claim, stating that all PSPs contain the "CE" mark indicating conformity with European Union product regulations.

Lik Sang went on to point out that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe executives had purchased PSPs from Lik Sang, and listed several by name. "Sony Europe's very own top directors repeatedly got their Sony PSP hard or software imports in nicely packed Lik-Sang parcels with free Lik-Sang Mugs or Lik-Sang Badge Holders," reads the press release, "starting just two days after Japan's official release, as early as 14th of December 2004 (more than nine months earlier than the legal action)." Sony's first legal actions taken against Lik Sang for PSP sales began in late 2005.

"Today is Sony Europe victory about PSP, tomorrow is Sony Europe’s ongoing pressure about PlayStation 3," said former Lik Sang marketing manager Pascal Clarysse. "With this precedent set, next week could already be the stage for complaints from Sony America about the same thing, or from other console manufacturers about other consoles to other regions, or even from any publisher about any specific software title to any country they don’t see fit."

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony denied any liability in the matter. "Lik-Sang did not contest this case (i.e. they did not turn up and therefore incurred no legal costs)," read the statement. On Friday, Clarysse had stated, "Fighting multiple lawsuits in different countries at the same time and paying high premiums to expensive lawyers is an overwhelming situation for a small company like Lik Sang. Launching separate court actions with separate claims and different judges is completely unnecessary, except for the fact that it helps reaching one single target: outspend Lik-Sang to death." He added, "Pay beyond," a reference to Sony's current marketing slogan "Play beyond."

Sony's response continued, "We would therefore strongly deny that our actions have had anything to do with this website closing (we assume the legal entity is still trading), and would suggest that this release is sour grapes on behalf of Lik-Sang which is aimed to belittle Sony Computer Entertainment and the British judicial system that found against them." The company also stated that Sony employee purchases from Lik Sang were made for "investigatory purposes."

  • Ubisoft announces GRAW 2, increases Wii title count

    [ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo]

In a sales report for its first half of its current fiscal year, publisher Ubisoft made a number of noteworthy announcements. The company announced Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, a followup to its critically and commercially well received title released earlier this year. GRAW 2 will ship in the fourth quarter of its current fiscal year, which will put it in stores some time between January and March of 2007.

After already establishing itself has having the highest number of launch titles planned for Wii, Ubisoft has now announced that it will have an additional seven games available for the system by the end of its fiscal year, bringing Ubisoft's total Wii game count to 14 by March 2007. Of those games, one will be part of a "non announced new brand." Ubisoft has already established a new franchise on the system with its upcoming launch title Red Steel.

Both Assassin's Creed (PS3, X360, PC) from Ubisoft Montreal and Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway (PS3, X360, PC) from Gearbox have been delayed from their calendar Q1 2007 release periods. The games are given a broad potential release period, running from April 2007 to March 2008, but it is likely they will appear in the second half of 2007.

  • Grasshopper has "secret" title in works for Wii

    [nintendo]

Earlier this year, Killer7 developer Grasshopper Manufacturer quietly announced that it is developing a game for Wii entitled Heroes, which centers around a protagonist who wields a lightsaber-like weapon. Speaking to Game Informer Online, Heroes director and Grasshopper head Goichi Suda revealed that the company has "another secret Wii title" in the works, though he did not go into any details as to its genre or name.

Interestingly, Suda noted that it is purely coincidence that Heroes' swordplay mechanic is so appropriate to Wii's motion-sensitive controller. Apparently, the game's concept had been formulated before Nintendo had publically unveiled the Wii remote. The game's publisher, Marvelous Interactive, was aware of Nintendo's plans and strongly encouraged Grasshopper to develop the game for the system. "When I found out about the remote controller I understood why he was pushing so hard for Wii," recalls Suda, who added, "The final reason is that people at Nintendo are really nice people, too. And since we are a small development team Nintendo was really happy and supportive of us."

Suda also revealed some early gameplay details of Heroes. The game plays in third person, with the nunchuck analog stick used for movement and the remote used for controlling actions, a common scheme for the system. The game's main character Travis Touch down is a hitman who must become the top-ranked professional killer by tracking down and killing the ten ranked above him.

Finally, Suda addressed frequent rumors that he is working on a game with Metal Gear series designer Hideo Kojima. "There have been rumors about us working on something for next year. If we are actually making something together it would be a really interesting game," he said, adding that he and Kojima have "developed a good relationship" since the latter attended a Grasshopper event in January.

  • F.E.A.R. 360 to release on appropriate day

    [xbox360]

Following many months of press release titles and news headlines using the title of Monolith Productions' F.E.A.R. in conjunction with the English language's word "fear" (or synonyms thereof), publisher Sierra Entertainment is tying it all together by announcing that Day 1's Xbox 360 port of the game will be released on Halloween, October 31. The Xbox 360 version will include a new arcade-like Instant Action Mode featuring online leaderboards.

Day 1 is also developing a PlayStation 3 version of F.E.A.R., set to ship alongside the console's North American launch on November 17, 2006.

  • Guitar Hero II rocks web

    [ps2] [xbox360]

RedOctane has launched the official site for Harmonix's Guitar Hero II. It consists of a trailer, a track list, character profiles, and various screenshots and wallpapers. Guitar Hero II is set to launch for PlayStation 2 on November 7, and for Xbox 360 at a later unannounced date.

This isn't going to continue creeping later into the week, I promise!

I'm looking forward to picking up a few of this week's games, once I find the time. Clover Studio's God Hand (PS2) has been on my list for a while now (trailer) and with the exception of one outlier it's been getting the sorts of reviews I've expected. Agenda's Clubhouse Games (NDS) is also coming out, and I think that one's a pretty sure bet. It has some 40 board and card games, nearly all of which are playable over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection; it's hard to pass that up in portable form.
