Max Payne Patch Released

Jul 27, 2001 8:54am CST tags: Max Payne
As expected, the Max Payne patch has been released. This should hopefully fix the problems for those people who are seeing their own desktop instead of the game.

- Exit to desktop stability issues addressed: The issues with the game crashing into Windows' desktop when loading a new map have been addressed.
- Game doesn't start with some CD-Rom drives: A newer version of SafeDisc copy protection is used. If the game still doesn't start up, please contact support@talonsoft.com. Please include detailed hardware configuration information from your PC including CD-ROM model and operating system

You can download the 6.2mb patch from eDome (Finland), 3D Files, Blues News, Gameplex or PC Zone.

Remedy's Petri Järvilehto made a forum post here about the Windows 2000/GeForce 3 problem that Max Payne seems to have for some people. Its most likely a driver issue since, as is often the case, the problem wasn't found during testing.

Max Payne Day

Jul 25, 2001 10:50am CST tags: Max Payne
Max Payne is arriving in stores around the US today (and has already apparently shown up overseas). Even that goofy klerck guy who works at EB confirmed it. Bum deal about the 3DR direct orders getting detained. Those guys should get their orders on Friday. This is the first game I've previewed in quite a while so I'm anxious to see how many people agree or disagree (you fool!) with what kind of reactions the game will get.

If you're just dying for Payne, here's our archive of Max Payne news from Shack Categories.

Where's the Payne

Jul 25, 2001 10:03am CST tags: 3D Realms, Max Payne
GeorgeB over at 3D Realms updated his .plan file with the bad news that their copies of Max Payne intended for preorders have taken longer to get to 3DR than intended. This means that instead of today, most people will get the game on Friday. Some stores might get the game today.

Max Payne Media

Last week when writing my Max Payne preview Gathering of Developers was kind enough to also send along some images and video footage. The images ended up showing up in some other articles and I called George a communist but things are cool. Here are three 1600x1200 wallpaper size images of Max Payne. In addition, here's a quick 2meg video clip of the sniper rifle in action. Not really one of my favorite clips but hey it's something new. You'll need QuickTime to view it. (Bah!)

Max Payne GONE GOLD

Jul 15, 2001 1:49pm CST tags: Max Payne, Gone Gold
As noted in Scott Miller's .plan update and the Remedy website, the 3rd person action shooter Max Payne has GONE GOLD. Thanks to all the previews of the past few weeks you should be pretty informed about the title right now, but you could read Steve's preview again ;) Thanks Blues News. The game should be in US stores late this month (the European release hopefully around the same time, or a week or so later), followed by a demo.

Max Payne Space

Jul 15, 2001 9:41am CST tags: Max Payne
If you were wondering how much space Max Payne will need to install..it will be 850mb for a full install, and 530mb for a partial install. If you do the partial install the levels will get loaded from the CD so obviously it will be a lot slower.

Max Payne @ Shack

Jul 13, 2001 7:19pm CST tags: 3D Realms, Max Payne
As promised here is my hands-on preview of Max Payne after visiting 3D Realms last week. If you havent heard yet the game should be going gold and showing up on shelves probably within a month. Not much more to say, here's the obligatory quote of myself and a uh.. link.

No jump puzzles. Also sadly, no monster trucks.

Max Payne is played from a 3rd person perspective with a locked camera most of the time. The pivot point of the camera appears to be a point between the camera and the player instead of the way most 3rd person style games are. (Pivot at the player point) The subtle difference makes a FPS player feel a little bit more at home as the movements are a little less disorienting. [snip]
