Dementium Developer Reveals Moon

Mar 14, 2008 5:00pm CST tags: Moon, Screenshots, Mastiff, Renegade Kid
Dementium: The Ward (NDS) developer Renegade Kid is currently at work on Moon, a new sci-fi action adventure title for the Nintendo DS, publisher Mastiff announced today.

Previously known under the code name "Project M", Moon situates players on the empty, cold surface of the moon in the year 2058, where scientists discover a sealed alien hatch during the construction of a lunar base.

"Moon is dark, twisted, heart pounding, frequently violent and always disturbing," said Mastiff CEO Bill Swartz. "Pretty much what you'd expect when you take madmen like Renegade Kid, jack their technology up to the next level, and turn them loose."

A teaser trailer was also released, but due to technical issues, Shacknews is unable to post it at this time. In its place, please accept a number of captures from said trailer.

Moon utilizes the developer's Renegade Engine for its 3D graphics, previously seen in Dementium: The Ward. A release date was not announced.

Mastiff Secures Major League Eating License

Feb 07, 2008 5:30pm CST tags: Mastiff, Industry News: Console
San Francisco-based publisher Mastiff has announced a partnership with Major League Eating to create competitive eating games.

The first product to come out of the partnership is Major League Eating: The Game, a competitive eating title built like a fighting game. Players must master offensive and defensive skills and weapons like burps and belches to conquer their competitors, all while keeping mountains of grub securely in their stomachs.

"Major League Eaters aren't just elite athletes, they are the people who built America. Or at least the competitive eating part of America," said Mastiff CEO Bill Swartz. "I am deeply honored that the International Federation of Competitive Eating and Major League Eating choose Mastiff as their exclusive videogame partner."

Competitive eating—much like eating in general—has become quite popular in America, with MLE producing six hours of programming for networks ESPN and Spike TV in 2007. Though no platforms or release dates for MLE: The Game were specified in Mastiff's pun-laden press release, it's likely that further details will be announced soon.

Dementium Developer's 'Project M' Gets Publisher

Oct 31, 2007 4:53pm CST tags: Mastiff, Renegade Kid
Though indie developer Renegade Kid's creepout first-person horror title Dementium: The Ward (DS) just retailed today, the small studio already has another project in the works, with a new publisher to boot. Game publisher Mastiff announced today it has signed on with Renegade Kid to publish the studio's next DS title, codenamed Project M.

The studio's next project will use the same impressive 3D engine the developer created for Dementium. Renegade Kid didn't reveal an estimated retail window for the title.

Renegade Kid worked with Austin-based game publisher Gamecock to bring its first title to market. Dementium is the second title published by Gamecock after the debut of Auran's PVP-centric online title Fury (PC).

Late Night Consoling

The other day, I stumbled upon this article that breaks down the ergonomics of game controllers, going all the way back to the Atari 2600 and even looking at the gamepads of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I remember as a youngin' the very first thing I'd like to do when I got a new console was just hold the controller and see how it felt. When the N64 was fast approaching and demo kiosks were being placed in stores, I grabbed that controller and just fiddled with it for a few minutes before even playing Mario 64. Surprisingly, this article slightly bashes the N64's controller; I feel it's the best one designed for the games it was played with. Although if I recall correctly, many of you think the Saturn pad as the best by far, which may be why SEGA has re-released it for multiple platforms, including the PC and PS2.
  • Microsoft Licensing the Xbox

    [xbox]

Bill Gates has been touring Japan, dropping bits and pieces of information at each of his stops. First he mentioned that future revisions of the Xbox 360 could include an HD-DVD drive. Now, he's saying that Microsoft is considering licensing the tech and software of the Xbox. I'm not sure what purpose the tech could serve outside of playing Xbox games, but it's definitely an interesting decision.

  • Devs Have Seen Revolution Controller

    [nintendo]

Nintendo's crazy exec that kicks ass and takes names recently spoke with EGM and talked at length about the Revolution's top-secret controller. He said, "The thing that I always find surprising...is when you sit down and share the innovation with them, just how excited they get." He then talked about how the Revolution will allow you to play NES, SNES, and N64 games and how the controller must adapt, hinting at its design. Going slightly off-topic, he did make it sound like that the Revolution will be priced a good deal lower than its competitors.

  • Major Delay for Revolution?

    [nintendo]

Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, talked to investors today and he dropped a bit of info on the Revolution's elusive release date. "There is no possibility that the Revolution's launch will fall behind by too much, but there might be some small changes [in its release schedule]." So far, Nintendo has only stated a 2006 release with hints at launching near the PS3, but this message doesn't bode well for Nintendo fans.

  • Top Gun Roaring onto DS

    [ds]

It's pretty surprising that there's no War of the Worlds game, but another famous Tom Cruise flick will get a new game. Mastiff Games announced they will release Top Gun DS, based on the 20-year-old movie. It'll come packed with 10 missions and multiplayer support for four players. No release date is set.

  • Japanese All-Star Devs Contributing Tenchu Maps

    [psp]

The upcoming PSP entry in the Tenchu series will feature maps designed by prominent Japanese designers outside of From Software, who are the developers of the game. A name most of you will recognize is Yuji Naka, creator of Sonic The Hedgehog. The other three are Shin Megami Tensei creator Koji Okada, Level 5 president Akihiro Hino, and ChunSoft president Koichi Nakamura. They'll be created with the in-game map creator and released over the Internet.

Late Night Consoling

Feb 14, 2005 10:00pm CST tags: Mastiff, Games: Console, Sony
According to rumors on the Internets, the Xbox 2/Xenon/Xbox Next/Xbox 360 will definitely be released "late October, early November." This has spun everyone into a tizzy, but I'm not sure why this is garnering so much attention. The rumored release has been, for over a half a year now, late 2005. I certainly didn't expect anything sooner than late October, early November. As was witnessed this past holiday season, publishers want their product on store shelves no later than the Tuesday before Black Friday. Looking back at system releases, such as the Nintendo DS, Xbox, and GameCube, they each were mid-November. I wouldn't call this surprising news. In the end, it's all still just speculation.
  • Pump It Up on Your Consoles

    [ps2] [xbox]

Mastiff Games announced that it plans to publish a home console version of Pump It Up: Exceed for the PS2 and Xbox. The game has the same general idea as Dance Dance Revolution, but PIU "reward players for not just where they put their feet, but how the feet got there." 80 songs will be included, most of them from Korean pop artists. Bill Swartz, the "Head Woof" at Mastiff, explained "Other dancing games are about watching the screen and stomping in the right spot, which is great if you didn't get enough whack-a-mole as a kid. Pump It Up gets you dancing like you're in a club."

  • Ballmer Talks Xbox 2 with High Schoolers

    [xbox]

Microsoft hosted a group of high school students at their Redmond campus and CEO Steve Ballmer wasn't shy talking about their follow up to the Xbox. TeamXbox has plenty of excellent quotes here, but a couple highlights are: "I think we're going to blow by Sony with our next box. I absolutely think we're going to kick their backsides, so to speak," and "Rumors are that we'll see that product sometime soon. I couldn't comment, of course, on those rumors. But it's an amazing, amazing innovation."

NDS PSP Nintendo, Sony Can't Handle Japanese Demand
It's looking like many Japanese gamers will be disappointed for the launches of Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP early next month. Both companies are reporting that demand is higher than anticipated and they will not be able to meet public demand. This puts both companies in an interesting situation; with the two handhelds launching only ten days apart, it may come down to which company can consistently provide the hardware. If a gamer can't secure the system of his or her choice, he/she may end up purchasing the alternate portable. Nintendo appears to have the edge; they'll have one million units by the end of the month whereas Sony will only reach half that amount.

PS2 Phantom Kingdom Announced

This is so far only announced for Japan, but given that many of the company's titles have come stateside, we could surely see this on our shores.

While some of you out there see Acclaim's impending closure as good riddance to bad rubbish, it is always a bit disheartening to see one of the industry's cornerstones crumbling into pieces. They brought so many memorable moments like BMX XXX which reminded us of the SNL quote, "who are the ad-wizards that came up with this one?" How about the name your child Turok contest? But in all seriousness, they may of done as much good as they did bad, bringing arcade hits to the consoles such as NBA Jam and the Mortal Kombat series. In the end, however, I think they will go down as one of the worst offenders of releasing licensed games that were just terrible. True Lies wasn't that bad, though..

Acclaim Closing Its Doors
While there is no official announcement at this point, it appears apparent that longtime industry powerhouse, Acclaim, is shutting down and shutting down for good. Employees across the globe have been contacting media personnel, telling them of closed-door meetings where the company has told them that Acclaim will file for bankruptcy protection and eventually cease operations. It's been a stream of bad news lately for the company; the last time employees were paid was on August 17, it has been delisted from NASDAQ, and now this.

Where does this leave The Red Star and Juiced? Both titles are finished but their future prospects are unknown. Juiced, set to ship next week, is delayed till further notice as its no longer being published by Acclaim. As for the employees of the company, earlier reports suggested the majority of them were laid off, but sources tell gamesindustry.biz otherwise; they've just been locked out of their offices due to unpaid rent. More should be known about this crisis in the coming days.

Late Night Consoling

Jun 18, 2004 10:00pm CST tags: Bungie, Atlus, Mastiff, Games: Console, Sony
This is definitely what you would call a slow news night, but the sites didn't disappoint in the media category. If you haven't got around to learning about the new portables from Sony and Nintendo, now's a good chance with Game Informer's twin rundowns of the handhelds (NDS, PSP). It's interesting how a couple of each device's main draws can also be their downfall. For the PSP, its "can do everything" attitude, playing music and movies on top of games, is costing it points in the price/battery life arena. As for the DS, while the twin screens are great, the stylus and touch screen seemed to have left some folk at E3 upset, as using the stylus makes holding the system difficult and easy to scratch up the screen pretty quickly. No matter what though, I'll be one of those geeks camping out at a 24/7 Wal-Mart to be the first to own one. I'm weak. =(
PS2 Atlus to Publish Latest Choro Q
The quirky mini-sized car racing series will hit the PS2 this fall thanks to a new arrangement between Takara and Atlus. Taking over for Conspiracy Entertainment, Takara will now publish the latest Choro Q in the United States and this time, instead of changing the name, it'll remain true to its Japanese roots. The latest version will feature an RPG-ish story that allows racers to compete in over a 100 events and utilize about 200 vehicles. Screenshots are below in Misc. Media.
PS2 Gungrave O.D. Coming Stateside
Mastiff Games announced today it will publish the sequel to Gungrave, Gungrave O.D. in the United States later this fall. The TV series is being released on DVD this summer, so this would be a supple opportunity to piggyback on its sales.

I think the big nugget of info this week is that not only can the Master Chief wield two weapons at the same time, he can also have a third equipped. That's good stuff right there. Other tidbits are that the water effects have been revamped and that they're wrapping up the cut-scene animations. Also, this update taught me the definition of an "air biscuit."

Yea, that's right, baby."
Xbox GamerFeed moves to the beat in their preview of DDR: Ultramix 2. GameSpy punches it into high gear with new shots of Forza Motorsport and a trailer of Fate of Ages. Tonight's story about Take-Two publishing SEGA's sports series at value pricing is one that really catches my interest. Forever now, gamers have been promised that the prices of games will drop. Some head-way has been made in this department, with a few titles debuting at $39.99 and the $19.99 Greatest Hits/Player's Choice/Platinum titles being successful enough that more titles are added to those line-ups. However, we have yet to see a big-name, high-quality title released at a budget price. If Take-Two's interpretation of value is $30 or less, it'll be incredibly interesting to see how gamers react to the situation where they only have two NFL titles to choose from and both of them are of roughly the same caliber. If successful, will it spark a trend or will publishers simply ignore it?
PS2 Xbox Take-Two Teams Up with SEGA
Take-Two Interactive announced today that they will co-publish and distribute the SEGA ESPN sports lineup worldwide. Even more interesting, in their press release, Take-Two President Paul Eibeler states, "We are also adding the compelling element of value pricing to this high quality line...with Sony and Microsoft not publishing sports titles this holiday season, there is a significant competitive opportunity for ESPN Videogames titles." Looks like to me if there's ever a chance for SEGA to take EA's football crown, this is it.

Viacom Takeover of Midway Likely
GameSpot is reporting tonight that Viacom CEO and Chairman Sumner Redstone is poised to purchase enough stock of Midway to take the company private and then will sell the publisher to Viacom. This idea is fueled by reports that Redstone has hired a financial advisor to assist in a possible decision to increase his stake in the common stock from 72.4% to 80%. By purchasing Midway, this will enable Viacom to become a factor in the gaming arena, since it has plenty of hot brands to take advantage of, namely MTV and Nickelodeon.
GCN Nintendo Releases New Memory Card
GamerFeed reports tonight that Nintendo has released to retailers a new memory card, quadrupling the storage to accomodate 1,019 blocks, or 8MB. There is no explanation as to why Nintendo has decided to release this new card, but one could hypothesize that some new games down the road will require a large amount of space. Either that or they caved to gamers' demands for more storage. In any case, they're available now for $29.99.
PS2 Technic Beat Coming to the US
Attention music game fans, another popular Japanese title is coming your way! Mastiff has announced they will release their hit title Technic Beat later this summer. GamerFeed describes the gameplay as having "...players listen to music represented in the game by radiating concentric rings of sound. Picking up the beat, they dance into the middle of the rings and try to 'catch' the music." Confused? You can check out the screenshots in the PS2 media section, but they won't help you.

Konami Secures Rights for Dragon Booster
A new cartoon series slated to begin airing this fall has already found someone to develop licensed games. Konami announced today that they have secured the rights for Dragon Booster, an anime-style production set in a world where humans and dragons co-exist. A representive of Alliance Atlantis, the cartoon's owner, commented, ""Dragon Booster was thoughtfully crafted from its inception not only to provide our video game partner with compelling, rich content, but to deliver key elements specific to the gaming community." Sounds like this show was created solely for licensing purposes.

Console Game of the Evening: Crazy Taxi 2 for the Dreamcast. "The "forgotten" sequel. CT1 has been ported to all the major consoles, and CT3 is an Xbox exclusive, but they're not porting CT2 to anything and since it came out so close to the end of the Dreamcast, it was basically ignored." (submitted by Schnapple).

Late Night Consoling

I've been sort of dividing my gameplay time between Fallout (and now Fallout 2) and Beyond Good & Evil, but I definitely am enjoying BG&E. One thing that I find to be really funny about the game is its soundtrack. I think I kind of dig it, but boy is it ever strange...I described it recently as "Bizarro world salsa" which is probably the closest anyone's going to get to pinning down an accurate description of it. No matter what, I think it's interesting that it's so hard to clasify...but then again, maybe that's just me, and I'm admittedly not up on my musical genres. Anyone else out there care to take a crack at it?

Xbox Xbox "Tsunami" Features Revealed
Microsoft has revealed some of the new features that will be rolled out in the next big Xbox Live update, currently known as "Tsunami." The four big features announced were all rumored, and they include better team management and user-created competitions, online storage and integration with the MSN Messenger.
PS2 Xbox Vis Goes BAM!
BAM! Entertainment (who scores major points in my book for including a word in all caps and an exclamation point in their name), has announced that they have bought out Vis Entertainment, the developers of State of Emergency. This deal obviously means BAM! (love that name!) will be publishing the sequel to that game, which has been in development without a publisher after Rockstar Games decided to pass on it.
Xbox If You Ruled the Gaming World...
Microsoft has announced an odd sort of contest/survey, in which they have posted a questionnaire and are asking people to mail in a video tape of their responses or send them in by e-mail. There's no real prizes per se, but Microsoft will use this as market research, and if they really like your response, they'll fly to your house (which seems like a lot less fun than flying the winners to Microsoft if you ask me) to film you for a feature on Xbox.com. I'd enter, but I'm afraid my response would seem like those old videos of Mussolini pontificating. Either that, or Howard Dean. Either way, it'd be frightening to see me banging my fist as I yell out things like, "there will be more Panzer Dragoon! A real sequel to Final Fantasy VII! A new Zillion! And for god's sake, SHENMUE 3!!!!"
Nintendo PlayStation First US Final Fantasy Concert Announced
Square Enix USA has announced the first Final Fantasy symphonic concert to be held in this country. The concert will be on Monday, May 10th (that's E3 week) at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Performing music from Nobuo Uematsu's library of Final Fantasy work will be the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. It should be a great show...alas, I almost certainly won't be able to make it.
Xbox Xbox Price Cut? Nah, not yet.
Various sources today (including the NY Post) said today that Microsoft would be dropping the price of the Xbox from its current $179 price down to $150 in April. While that may still happen (in fact it seems quite likely) Microsoft is still denying anything of the sort, and is probably waiting to see Sony drop their price first.

Acclaim Hemorrhaging Less
Acclaim Entertainment announced today a $31 million loss for the nine-month period ending this past December. That's hardly anything to be thrilled about, but hey, it's $9 million less than the same amount from that period last year. Moving forward, Acclaim does actually have some big-name titles for the first time in a long while, including Alias and 100 Bullets, so hopefully they'll pull themselves out of this nose dive.
PS2 Dark Odyssey Revealed (Or at least the title, anyway)
1UP is reporting that later this week, SCEA will unveil Dark Odyssey, the upcoming RPG from Dark Cloud developers Level 5. This is the game that was previously only known as "next RPG" when it was first announced on Level 5's web site. Judging from the title, it would seem that this is a third game in the Dark Cloud series.
PS2 PS2 as Videophone?
At an IPv6 summit, Sony apparently showed off one of those convergence concepts that nobody really needs (or wants for that matter): a PS2 videophone. This was purely a prototype, and it's doubtful such a product will ever make it to market. As for future implementations of the EyeToy in online gaming...that's already been hinted at, and will likely happen, despite the incredible possibilities for abuse.
PS2 Xbox EA Licenses Fonix Voice Command Software
In a similar vein to the above story (although much more practical), Electronic Arts has apparently licensed the Fonix voice command software. Fonix is part of Sony's PS2 middleware program, and its software recently powered the voice command functionality in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 for Xbox.
PS2 La Pucelle: Tactics Coming to America
Good news for fans of Disgaea: publisher Mastiff Games has announced that La Pucelle: Tactics, a strategy RPG from Disgaea developers Nippon Ichi, will be released domestically in early May of this year. Like Disgaea, retailers' supplies may be limited, so if you're planning on getting it, be sure to pre-order it.
