Leaked Too Human Media Shows Off Co-op

May 12, 2008 5:56pm CST tags: Too Human, Screenshots, Microsoft Spring Showcase, Leak
Furthering the silly amount of material leaked from Microsoft's Spring Showcase are new Too Human (X360) screenshots that show the action-RPG's cooperative play.
As with the leaked Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pinata 2 screens, these shots recently began popping up on message boards and sites.

For more on Silicon Knights' efforts to reinvigorate the action-RPG genre, scope out our hands-on impressions of Too Human.

Check back with Shacknews tomorrow morning for the full scoop on Microsoft's Spring Showcase and its many titles, assuming there is anything left to cover by that time.

More MS Rumors: Ninja Blade, Lips and Scene It? 2

May 12, 2008 3:29pm CST tags: Microsoft, Leak, Rumor, Microsoft Spring Showcase
Though Microsoft's Spring Showcase event doesn't take place until tomorrow, more supposed details have emerged to accompany the already-leaked media and rumors of a motion-sensitive Xbox 360 controller.

Tomorrow's announcements apparently include a sequel to the Xbox 360 movie-trivia title Scene It?, a game called Ninja Blade, and something known only as Lips. That is, according to listings that supposedly popped up on a Microsoft's press site and were captured by NeoGAF.

Apart from the product names, no other details are available. Some believe that Lips could be a voice-controlled game or a voice-related accessory, though it is all just idle speculation at this point.

The listings also suggest that the Viva Pinata sequel that unofficially debuted this morning will be known as Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

Check back with Shacknews tomorrow morning for the full scoop on Microsoft's Spring Showcase and its many titles, including Banjo Kazooie (X360).

Debut Viva Pinata 2 Media Leaked

May 12, 2008 8:09am CST tags: Viva Pinata 2, Screenshots, Leak, Microsoft Spring Showcase
Much like Banjo Kazooie (X360), it seems that the first screenshots from a Viva Pinata sequel have begun circulating the 'net in advance of the Xbox 360 title's official unveiling.

Judging from the use of multiple player cursors, it seems the previously-unannounced followup to Rare's garden-building, pinata-breeding effort will add some sort of multiplayer component. The first Viva Pinata hit Xbox 360 in 2006 and PC in 2007.

As Microsoft is holding is Spring Showcase in San Francisco tomorrow, check back tomorrow morning for the official word on Viva Pinata 2 and the rest of the company's Xbox 360 lineup.

First Banjo Kazooie 360 Screens Leak (Updated)

May 11, 2008 10:44am CST tags: Banjo Kazooie, Screenshots, Leak, Microsoft Spring Showcase
Update: Eleven more screenshots have surfaced to accompany the original two.

Original Story: Two supposed but rather legitimate-looking screenshots of Rare's upcoming Xbox 360 action-adventure title Banjo Kazooie began making rounds on the internet today.

Representing the first media of the game to arrive since its 2006 announcement trailer, the images provide an in-game glimpse of the first Banjo effort to hit a home console since the Nintendo 64 release of Banjo Tooie in 2000.

Rumors suggest the title, which is often referred to by series fans as Banjo Kazooie 3 or Banjo Threeie, will be compatible with the oft-rumored Wii Remote-esque Xbox 360 controller.

Given that Microsoft is set to show Banjo Kazooie at its Spring Showcase event on Tuesday, it is likely that these assets are from the media that is planned that day. Check back with Shacknews Tuesday for more on Banjo and the rest of Microsoft's 2008 lineup.

Grand Theft Auto 4 City Map Leaked?

Mar 26, 2008 12:59pm CST tags: Grand Theft Auto 4, Screenshots, Leak
A series of snapshots supposedly picturing the map insert for Rockstar North's upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) have appeared online, apparently showing off the full New York-inspired city map and revealing several new details.
The photos first appeared in a now-removed Webshots gallery, and were subsequently rehosted by Kotaku. Rockstar Games has yet to comment on the legitimacy of the images.

Grand Theft Auto IV is slated for an April 29 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Alleged New Sonic Media Surfaces

Mar 24, 2008 3:59pm CST tags: Sonic Unleashed, Sega, Leak
An abundance of supposed media from the next Sonic the Hedgehog game appeared online across the weekend, giving gamers what many believe to be the first look at the blue speedster's next adventure.

While Sega has yet to officially announce the game or comment on the media, the title is rumored to be known as Sonic Unleashed, with the resolution of the screenshots suggesting it is being developed for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to the rumors, the title is expected to release later this year.

In all, the materials included a whopping 82 screenshots--70 in-game, 12 cutscene stills--along with a short gameplay video, which is viewable below.

Future Rock Band Tracks Leaked? (Updated)

Feb 14, 2008 6:20pm CST tags: Valve, DLC, Rock Band, Leak
Update: A representative of MTV Games and Harmonix has informed Shacknews that the leaked Rock Band DLC information "is unconfirmed and subject to change."

"Please stay tuned for confirmation of Rock Band DLC closer to their release," the representative added.

Original Story: A user on the rhythm game fan site Scorehero.com claims to have uncovered a massive list of future downloadable songs for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Harmonix's Rock Band.

The list was apparently contained in a file named spa.bin, found in the recent Rock Band DLC "(Arguably) Punk Pack 02." The leaked tracks include all of the songs tentatively scheduled by Harmonix for a March release, as well as many new offerings.

While the list does not include artist names, tracks from bands already attached to the game are easily discernible, such as classic songs by Nirvana and the Grateful Dead. When combined with previously-released material, the Nirvana tracks constitute the entire album of "Nevermind," one of the few full-album downloads confirmed by Harmonix before the game's release.

Some newcomers are present, such as "Still Alive," potentially the popular Jonathan Coulton song from Valve's Portal.

The full assortment can be found below, with the tentative March DLC removed and likely band candidates attached: ... Read more

Tribes-like GarageGames Web Title Revealed by Alpha Video Leak

Dec 23, 2007 2:43pm CST tags: Steam, Games: PC, Leak
Untitled Tribes-like GarageGames project Unprotected links on the InstantAction.com website, a browser-based gaming platform in development by GarageGames, have today lead to the discovery of several alpha-level videos showing off the company's upcoming team-based online shooter.

A source close to GarageGames stressed that the videos--depicting Tribes-like combat on an alien world--represent early work, and were meant for internal use only. The clips are viewable below, edited into a single silent movie. We have also isolated a batch of screenshots from the footage.

Battlefield 3 Details Leaked?

Oct 10, 2007 5:01pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, Games: PC & Console, Battlefield, Leak
A report on Digital Battle is claiming to bring the first details of the next game in Electronic Arts' and developer DICE's Battlefield series.

According to the article--which cites an anonymous investor briefing that was sent in by a tipster--Battlefield 3 will apparently be returning to the modern setting of Battlefield 2, following the series' brief foray into the future in Battlefield 2142. One example of a map is titled "Baghdad Burning," with the only two playable factions consisting of NATO and the Middle Eastern Coalition.

The extensive feature list notes the game will ship with only 8 maps, supporting up to 80 players total in online play. Online stat tracking and awards will be taken further with a new "Soldier" feature, which will allow for avatars that can be designed as in a massively multiplayer game, and outfitted with unlockable armor and other accessories. Game mechanics appear to be similar to past games, including ticket-based capture points, five playable classes (Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic, Support), 48 vehicles, and 34 weapons.

Though only Windows Vista and OS X are listed as supported operating systems, it is hard to imagine Windows XP users will be left out of the dust. The game will supposedly use the "Frostbite DX" engine, apparently a version of the same engine used in the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company. In-game replay and recording features, popular in recent games such as Halo 3 and EA Black Box's skate., are also bullet-pointed.

The report concludes with a teaser trailer and announcement set for January 2008, along with a tentative public beta scheduled for next summer. Given the questionable nature of this rumor--the low number of maps in particular stands out as an oddity--keep your eyes peeled for either a confirmation or denial from EA in the future.

Leaked Ubisoft File Reveals Far Cry 2, Splinter Cell 5

Sep 21, 2006 2:13pm CST tags: Ubisoft, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Far Cry 2, Leak, Splinter Cell
Last night, internet sleuths, including one on the NeoGAF forums, uncovered a massive 2GB+ RAR file on Ubisoft's FTP site containing concept art, logos, and tech demos for a variety of Ubisoft games, some of which have yet to be announced. Much of the material was related to a Far Cry sequel that seems to be entitled simply Far Cry 2. Given that original Far Cry developer Crytek is currently working with EA on Crysis, and given Ubisoft's heavy use of its own Far Cry Instincts spinoff property, it is likely that Far Cry 2 is a successor to the Instincts line rather than the original PC title. It also seems that a PSP version of Far Cry is in the works, referred to only by a working title of Far Cry PSP.

Materials related to the unannounced fifth main game in the Splinter Cell series were also included among the files. The game's logo reveals that the game is entitled Splinter Cell Conviction.

Unsurprisingly, Ubisoft also looks to be adding another game to the Prince of Persia franchise. The leak included concept artwork and a logo for the game, but as of now it appears to have a working title of simply "Prince of Persia." The three previous current-gen Prince of Persia games were collectively referred to as the Sands of Time Trilogy, so it is likely that this new game is starting its own progression of games.

Other unnanounced titles include Surf's Up, a surfing game featuring playable penguins, and a PSP game based on the Rocky films that appears to be entitled "Rocky Balboa: It's not over, until it's over."

Ubisoft has offered an official response to these developments:

We are clearly displeased that confidential information from Ubisoft has been distributed on the internet. The publication of this type of information can only be harmful to the game development process and we will take all steps necessary to prevent this from happening in the future. We are still investigating the events that lead to this information leak and at this time have no further comment.

Painkiller Demo Date & Leak

Jan 05, 2004 3:00pm CST tags: Games: PC, Demo, Leak
Dreamcatcher Games has put out a statement concerning the recent Painkiller multiplayer early-beta build that has leaked onto the internet. Here is what they have to say which also has word of a February demo date:

January 5th, 2003. DreamCatcher Games is today requesting that Painkiller fans steer clear of the latest multi-player builds that have appeared on various fan and download sites, as the releases are NOT official demo releases and are intended for press evaluation purposes only.

The company is encouraging fans of the game to wait until early February for the official single-player demo release.

This leaked build contains just a glimpse of the multi-player maps planned and lacks the depth, weapons, levels and A.I. sophistication that will be present in the official demo.

For further information about the game head to www.painkillergame.com

Our policy of not discussing or implying where to download things like this or what you thought of the beta if you did download it in the comments still exists. However discussion of how warez is sucky and what a bummer this is etc is allowed for this news item.

Half-Life 2 Source Leak Update

Oct 03, 2003 7:40pm CST tags: Half-Life 2, Leak
We've gotten some more details on the recent Half-Life 2 source leak from Gabe Newell for you guys to read here. I have verified that this is legit over the phone just to be safe. Here's the latest:

1) We've taken our network connection down to pretty much a minimum. We're still finding machines internally that have been compromised.

2) The suite of tools that the attacker was using included the modified version of RemotelyAnywhere (basically a Remote Desktop-style remote admin tool), Haxker Defender (a process, registry key and file hiding tool), the key logger, and various networking utilities that allowed them to transfer files (compressors, NetCat, and FTP). We also are pretty sure they were sniffing our network to gather passwords and other information. Haxker Defender includes a file system driver that allows an attacker to have stuff on your machine that is invisible, unless you do something like mount the drive under another OS that has NTFS support.

We have determined one way of detecting some infected machines, which is using a connection viewer to detect connections to anomalous hosts external to our network.

We still don't know their entry method.

3) In general, the community has been remarkably swift at tracking down the sources of the leak. What would be most helpful now are IP addresses of the people who were responsible for the intrusion or for the denial of service attacks.

4) Also, please continue to send in URLs of websites hosting the source code. We've been contacting people and asking them to take it down.

5) There's anecdotal evidence that other game developers have been targeted by whoever attacked us. This hasn't been confirmed. We've been providing other game developers with more detailed information about the exploits and evidence of infiltration.

6) We're running a little bit blind with our network shut down, but it seems like some of the press has picked up the story. I've been fielding calls from the mainstream non-games, non-technical press.all day. Hopefully they will get to report shortly what a mistake it is to piss off a whole bunch of gamers and get them hunting you around the Internet.

For any information related to this, please send it to helpvalve@valvesoftware.com, or you can always send to gaben@valvesoftware.com as well.

Half-Life 2 Source Leak

Oct 02, 2003 4:16pm CST tags: Valve, Steam, Half-Life 2, Leak
In case you hadnt heard, the source code for Valve Software's Half-Life 2 has been leaked. Here's a statement from Gabe Newell via HalfLife2.net

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.
Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.
Here is what we know:
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.
What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.
We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

Gabe

Important: Just to be clear, it's ok to talk about the leak and the possible implications, however we'll nuke you and your family if you even make the most slight clever hint of where to download it or even screenshots of it.

CNN on MoH Demo Leak

Jan 04, 2002 11:55am CST tags: Games: PC, Demo, Leak
Of all places, CNN Money chimes in with an article about the Medal of Honor demo being leaked online. Ironically enough, the editor in chief at Computer Gaming World wasn't upset at all with the leak and didn't expect EA to have the demo pulled from various websites that hosted the file. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.
