Rumors Persist of New X-COM from BioShock Folk

May 05, 2008 11:08am CST tags: X-COM, Rumor, Ken Levine, BioShock
A report in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine furthers the long-running rumor that BioShock creator and 2K Boston studio head Ken Levine is working on a new entry in the long-dormant extraterrestrial tactical series X-COM, though it offers no new details.

The rumor has been circulating ever since a document attributing an X-COM title to then-Irrational Games, now-2K Boston and 2K Australia was found last year. The current projects of the studios behind BioShock (PC, X360) are unknown, though Levine is known to be participating in the production of BioShock 2 at the recently-founded 2K Marin office.

Further anecdotal evidence of a new X-COM game emerges from Levine's undying love of the X-COM franchise, which he has referred to as "sort of like my first love," as well as studio owner Take-Two Interactive's 2005 purchase of the X-COM property.

Apart from the supposed existence of a new X-COM, the OXM article did not unveil any new specifics or details, according to the Kotaku report.

GDC 08: Ken Levine on Storytelling in Games

Feb 20, 2008 12:35pm CST tags: Ken Levine, GDC 08, GDC
"The bad news is, for storytellers, nobody cares about your stupid story," began BioShock designer Ken Levine, a divisive introduction to a talk on story in games.

"I know that's hard to hear, because you care about it a lot.. But the audience has no reason to be predisposed positively."

Despite the harsh words, the 2K Boston creative director and former Hollywood screenwriter was jovial throughout his lecture, taking the audience packed with gaming press and developers through an interesting dissection of storytelling in the video game medium.

"There are so many missed opportunities in the primary experience to tell a narrative," Levine noted, stressing that the game world itself is the best storyteller of all. "What is a player looking at most of the time? When you're not forcing him to engage in a cutscene? He is engaged in the world."

Another key concept: the pushing or pulling of information. The veteran developer argued that games which require players to pull story information are ultimately more engaging than those which push their narratives onto players.

"Hat-tip to Valve.. I think Half-Life was the pioneer here," he added, noting... Read more

GDC 08 Sessions: No Guitar for Next Harmonix Game, Levine Talks BioShock Storytelling, EA on Sims 3

Oct 31, 2007 9:54am CST tags: GDC 08, Ken Levine, Games: PC & Console, GDC
The next game from Guitar Hero and Rock Band creator Harmonix will be free of the peripherals that have defined so many of its recent efforts, according to a listing of the initial Game Developers Conference 2008 sessions.

The title will, unsurprisingly, be centered around music. Similar to NanaOn-Sha's import-only cult classic Vib Ribbon (PSX), it is said to create custom levels based on a player's own music.

"While the majority of Harmonix built the juggernaut that is 'Rock Band,' a second, smaller team set to work on a game that turns a player's own music collection in an infinite variety of gameplay 'levels,'" reads the description for the session led by senior designer Chris Foster. "Their new title faced unique challenges: beats would not be authored by tech-savvy musicians, but would instead be algorithmically generated, and the game would lack the dedicated peripherals that were critical to the success of the Guitar Hero series."

Other notable talks include a discussion of in-game storytelling by BioShock creative designer Ken Levine, titled "Empowering Players To Care About Your Stupid Story," and a presentation from EA's Richard Evans on the new AI techniques used in the upcoming The Sims 3.

Game Developers Conference 2008 runs February 18-22 at San Francisco's Moscone Center.

Levine: BioShock Originally About Cult Deprogrammer (Updated)

Aug 30, 2007 4:49pm CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock
Recently, posts spread around the internet detailing BioShock's former setting of an isolated tropical island inhabited by genetically experimental Nazis, demonstrating just how much a game can change from initial conception to final product. That's nothing on what the game was about before then, however: a cult deprogrammer hired by the parents of a woman involved in a lesbian relationship to kidnap the daughter and rewrite her brain to steer clear of what her parents perceive as deviant activity.

Update: Ken Levine has contacted Shacknews to clarify that the player in the prior revision of BioShock's story did not necessarily reprogram a lesbian character; such actions are merely examples of the sort of tasks actual deprogrammers are hired to perform in the real world. Irrational's earlier story was more political in nature, with a deprogrammer being hired by a senator.

Original story: BioShock's creative director Ken Levine detailed the bizarre former premise to Shacknews during an extensive interview about BioShock, its world, and its fascinating and deranged denizens. The interview is packed with spoilers, however, so here are his remarks presented in a safe setting:

"There was another story before that about a cult deprogrammer," Levine explained. "I don't know if you know what a cult deprogrammer is... Read more

Ken Levine on BioShock: The Spoiler Interview

Aug 30, 2007 4:01pm CST tags: Ken Levine, Valve, BioShock, Interview
Ken Levine on BioShockHave you completed BioShock? Are you still mulling over your time in Rapture, and its insane denizens? Do you ponder its plot points and potential philosophical punditry? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, this is the interview for you.

In what is likely the only interview of its kind, I sat down with Irrational Games (now 2K Boston and 2K Australia) creative director and co-founder Ken Levine for an in-depth interview all about Rapture's considerably fleshed out story and world. Among many other topics, Levine discusses the influence of films such as Fight Club and games from Valve, his thoughts on the Objectivist philosophy at the root of Andrew Ryan's city, the conception of the game's memorable "boss" characters, the factors that contributed to Rapture's decline, and much, much more. Plus, lesbian cult deprogrammers!

But be warned: this interview is chock full of spoilers. If you haven't completed the game or do not wish to read revealing information, steer clear. Otherwise, continue, dear reader. First, a non-spoiling teaser:

Shack: Do you think you gave Objectivism short shrift at all?

Ken Levine: I'm fascinated by Objectivism. I think I gave it--I think the problem with any philosophy is that it's up to people to carry it out. It could have been Objectivism, it could have been anything. It's about what happens when ideals meet reality. If you had to sum up BioShock's story, that's what it is.

When philosophers write books, when they write fictional works like Atlas Shrugged, they put paragons in the books to carry out their ideals. I always wanted to tell a story of, what if a guy wasn't a paragon? What if his intentions were really good, but at the end of the day he was human? ...Read the rest

BioScandal Dwindles: Levine Promises Eventual Removal of DRM, Ends Betrayaltongate 07

Aug 24, 2007 5:47pm CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock, Scandal
Continuing this morning's progress towards resolving Aspect Ratiogate 07 and DRMgate 07, BioShock creative director Ken Levine has informed Joystiq that the game's oft-criticized SecuROM copyright protection will eventually be removed.

"At some point we'll move back from online activation," Levine stated. "If people want to play BioShock ten years from now, they'll be able to play it." Based on his wording, it's presumed that SecuROM activation will be disabled when retail sales of the game are no longer a pressing factor.

Levine then ended the brewing Betrayaltongate 07 scandal, conclusively vowing that there is no PlayStation 3 version of the Xbox 360 and PC game. "I promise you, there is no secret plan about the PS3 that we're keeping from people," he said. "There's no PS3 development going on that we're hiding."

As for the PS3 mention in one of the demo's configuration files? ... Read more

DRMgate 07: BioShock Copyright Protection Keeps 2K Controversy Burning

Aug 23, 2007 5:07pm CST tags: Ken Levine, 2K Games, BioShock, Controversy, Internet Rage
In a story that has truly swept the nation, 2K Boston and Australia's BioShock release woes continue. The newest complaint stems from the PC version of BioShock, which uses SecuROM copyright protection, preventing users from installing the game more than two consecutive times.

Responding to the concerns, steadfast 2K Games community manager and soon-to-be mental patient Elizabeth Tobey explained the issue in a thread on the 2K Games forum.

"You can uninstall and reinstall this game, and if, by chance, you have 2 computers you want to simultaneously play this game on, you... Read more

Creative Director Ken Levine on BioShock

Aug 22, 2007 4:12pm CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock
BioShockOn the eve of BioShock's release, I sat down with creative director and Irrational Games co-founder Ken Levine, the formidable mind behind not only BioShock but classics such as System Shock 2 and Thief. I spoke with Levine about the massive internet hysteria over BioShock, challenges and arguable missteps in development, how his role has changed, exhibiting creative freedom in development, how to sneak philosophy into action games, and more.

Come back next week for the second part of this epic interview--but be sure to complete the game first. In the followup, Ken and I delve deep into the plot points and themes of BioShock for an in-depth discussion about the world of Rapture, its philosophies, and its unforgettable heroes and villains.

Ken Levine: One thing I realized while making BioShock was that we had a lot of arguments about what people liked in System Shock 2. In reality, I think the fact that the world is so interesting, and the kind of interactions you can have--more than any specific gameplay, it's the fact that you're in this world that's very unique, and you can interact with that world on many levels, is what makes it fascinating. It's not this stat system or that stat system. Make an interesting world, and let people interact with it in unprecedented ways.
...
I just want to push forward in the context of what you can do within an action game. Our goal was always to be shooting and telling stories at the same time, and that was a goal with BioShock. We wanted to have our cake and eat it too.

BioShock PC Demo Coming Monday August 20th

Aug 19, 2007 5:43pm CST tags: Ken Levine, 2K Games, BioShock, Demo
2K Games has confirmed that the PC demo of Irrational's 2K Boston and Australia's BioShock will be released for download Monday evening around 7pm EST. The company was sure to note that new ATI and Nvidia video card drivers will be released the same day, and should be installed for best performance.

The BioShock demo will be of an impressive 1.84GB in girth that you will be able to eagerly gulp down at FileShack. The demo will also be available on the new FileShack Quicksilver system for Mercury members with support for download accelerators with multiple connections.

In a following update on the company's Cult of Rapture website, BioShock creative lead Ken Levine warned users away from potentially spoiler-filled forum posts and implored users not to post spoilers themselves.

"Please don't ruin other people's experience by revealing secrets in unmarked threads, and if you want to enjoy the game to its fullest, stay away from any threads that might ruin the fun for you," wrote Levine. "With a game like BioShock, it will really make a difference.

Look for a new Shacknews interview with Levine in the coming days.

BioShock Goes Gold as Irrational Loses Name

Aug 10, 2007 2:30pm CST tags: Ken Levine, 2K Games, BioShock, Gone Gold
Irrational Games, the acclaimed developer behind PC classic System Shock 2 as well as nearly-released SS2 "spiritual successor" BioShock (PC, X360), is no longer known as Irrational Games. The formerly independent studio, whose two branches were acquired by Take-Two Interactive last year under the 2K Games label, are now known as 2K Boston and 2K Australia.

Take-Two claims change will result in no loss of creative control for the companies. "We're proud to be part of the 2K Games family and enjoy the new opportunities and artistic freedoms this strengthened relationship provides," said Irrational president Ken Levine in a statement. "The name change signifies our growing position as a central part of 2K Games, and we plan to ensure our future titles continue to set new standards of quality and innovation for the industry." 2K and Irrational 2K representatives were unavailable for comment.

In a separate announcement, Take-Two announced BioShock has gone gold. The game will be available for PC and Xbox 360 in North America on August 21 and in Europe on August 24.

Shack Preview: BioShock

Jun 22, 2007 2:05pm CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock
Much has been made out of Irrational Games president Ken Levine's storytelling prowess. While BioShock has a lot more going for it than your average shooter, it also features a deep combat system, with open-ended mechanics that provide for a variety of unintended options. I recently had a chance to sit down with Mr. Levine to take a look at a portion of one of the game's later areas. In my preview, I go over the crazy antics and tense moments that I encountered, as well as how they fit into the overall BioShock experience. Check it out.
Some time later, the player managed to tether a flying bot to the ceiling with a wire, the bot bouncing back and forth in a futile attempt to escape. Wires can also be attached to Splicer enemies, the ensuing tangled mess leading to clothes-lines that take down other enemies as they run in circles. In a brooding, atmospheric game, the entertaining combat often transforms it into a dark comedy. "The best part is when you blow off people's hats and just toss them back at them," Levine said while, on screen, a little ingenuity transformed a teddy bear into a deadly weapon.
