James Cameron: True 3D Gaming Is the Future, Already in Upcoming Avatar Game

Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron believes that the future for gaming and entertainment lies with stereoscopic displays, which create the illusion of depth by supplying each eye with a slightly altered image.

"Stereo production is the next big thing," Cameron said during a lecture at Microsoft's Advance 08 Conference, according to CNET.

"You are in the game. This is the ultimate immersive media," he continued, noting the importance of such a concept with a first-person shooter.

Cameron revealed that the Ubisoft-developed Xbox 360 game adaptation of his upcoming 3D flick Avatar currently sports stereoscopic imagery via 3D glasses. However, he pointed out that there are certain displays that don't require special glasses to get the effect.

Cameron's Avatar to Feature Playable Avatars

Director James Cameron (Xenogenesis, Piranha Part Two: The Spawning) is going back to his science fiction roots with a new film called Avatar, and with a title like that, it was only a matter of time before a video game tie-in was announced.

Publisher Ubisoft broke the ice today, stating that it has acquired the license to create a game around Cameron's upcoming film. The adaptation is planned for a simultaneous release with the movie in May 2009.
