Independent developer Introversion Software has informed Shacknews that it expects the upcoming Darwinia multiplayer variant Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest to hit PCs this coming September.

The studio also revealed that Darwinia+, a version of the title for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade platform containing both Multiwinia and Darwinia's single-player campaign, would see release later this year.

Originally released on PCs in 2005, Darwinia tasked players with saving friendly AI programs from a tyrannical virus in the confines of a computer system. The game's stylish, simplistic graphics engine and genre-splicing gameplay helped elevate the title to a cult classic.

Darwinia+ Coming to XBLA This Fall

Confirming the game's listing on the ESRB's website yesterday, UK-based developer Introversion officially announced Darwinia+ for Xbox Live Arcade this afternoon.

Aimed for a fall 2008 release, Darwinia+ will feature both the original 2005 cult favorite Darwinia, plus Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest, an upcoming multiplayer variant of the title.

"Multiwinia is the natural conclusion of what we started with Darwinia way back in 2002 and, with the launch of Live Arcade, Microsoft has presented us with a fantastic opportunity to get onto a rung of the console ladder," Introversion said on its forums. "We're really looking forward to introducing Darwinia+ to a whole new audience."

The studio also noted that Multiwinia is still poised for a PC release. No price point or further details were released, but Introversion promised more updates in the near future.

Darwinia Slated for Xbox Live Arcade

A new listing on the Entertainment Software Rating Board's website reveals that a downloadable version of Introversion Software's lo-fi action-strategy hybrid Darwinia (PC) is coming to the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade.

The listing uncovered on the ESRB's website notes an Xbox Live Arcade version of Darwinia alongside its Windows PC counterpart. An XBLA port of the title has been rumored as far back as 2006, but both Microsoft and the developers have remained quiet about Darwinia's appearance on the platform.

Mixing elements of strategy, action, God games and other genres, Darwinia tasks players with guiding artificially intelligent beings to safety inside a highly stylized and Tron-like computerized environment. The game was developed by indie developer Introversion, whose other PC works include DEFCON and the hacker sim Uplink.

No official announcement of Darwinia on Xbox Live Arcade has yet been made. Shacknews has reached the developer for confirmation, but has not heard back as of this writing.
