Intel Close with 2Ghz

Aug 03, 2001 1:46pm CST tags: Intel
Acording to The Inquirer we will soon see the 2Ghz Pentium 4. The part should ship this month, and should cost somewhere around $565. If that's too much it'll cost you $260 for the 1.8Ghz and $375 for the 1.9Ghz version. The same Inquirer story also has pricing info for the new Pentium 3.

VIA La Resistance

Aug 02, 2001 9:11am CST tags: Intel
EBN has a story about restistance from motherboard makers to use VIA's Pentium 4 chipset. This is mainly because VIA doesn't have an official license for the Pentium 4, with Intel unwilling to grant one. This means Asus, Gigabyte Technology and Microstar won't have a VIA P4 board any time soon.

Pentium 3 1.2Ghz Review

Jul 30, 2001 9:03am CST tags: Intel
Those wacky bastards at Intel have actually released a new Pentium 3 using an improved core. It runs at 1.2Ghz. There are reviews at Hot Hardware, Tweak3D, Tech-Report, FiringSquad and AnandTech. Performance is mixed it looks like so it's not quite clear why Intel even bothered.

P4 Movement

Jul 27, 2001 12:57pm CST tags: Intel
Here's an interesting article looking at Intel's push on trying to get the P4 more market penetration. Looks good to me, I'd get a 2.4ghz P4 that ran sdram if the price was right.

Intel Still Supporting Rambus

Jul 20, 2001 8:46am CST tags: Intel
The Inquirer managed to obtain a document from big bad Intel showing they are still very happy with Rambus, and expect it to be around for years to come and for the same price as PC133 ram. Even if Rambus loses all its cases and what not, it looks like Intel is still looking for a continued partnership.

Intel Pushing Back

Jul 18, 2001 4:49pm CST tags: Intel
Looks like Intel is realizing that not a heck of a lot of people are buying P4's right now so they are gonna crank the speed up on them. The 2GHz P4 chips were expected fairly soon but now they are expected even fairly sooner! They are going to push the P4-2GHz chip out within the next few months and will also be putting emphasis on the 845 chipset (shipping in just a couple of weeks) which will let people use their current SDRAM instead of taking it in the butt from Rambus.

The move will increase the chip's presence in the mainstream part of the PC market while collapsing the current pricing gap between PCs based on Intel's Pentium III and systems based on the Pentium 4 processor. The end result will be a full transition from Pentium III to Pentium 4 on the desktop before the end of the year, [snip] Intel previously expected the Pentium 4 to dominate its desktop PC market in early 2002

Getting a P4 wasnt even a consideration for me back when I did my last upgrade. AMD has managed to get 22% of the market now and we're all scoring the benefits. Darn if I can remember what AMD plans on doing by the end of the year though.

Intel Roadmap

Jul 18, 2001 11:54am CST tags: Intel
The Register has some more of those ever changing Intel release dates for desktop processors. It's all "might" and "probably" but if you have't converted to AMD processors yet it might be worth a look.

1GHz Celerons

Jul 16, 2001 9:26am CST tags: Intel
Straight from Tech-Report: PROM is reporting that Intel may be accelerating the release of the Celeron 1GHz. Previous roadmaps showed that Intel was planning a Coppermine-based Celeron 1GHz for Q1 2002 and a Tualatin-based Celeron for Q2 2002, but Intel has reportedly begun testing the new desktop Celeron 1GHz already.

Intel & Memory

Jul 12, 2001 9:29am CST tags: Intel
EETimes has an article discussing a couple of the new memory technologies that Intel is working on and evaluating for future products. PFRAM or OUM are the two options. Thanks Choolz

Intel Price Moves

Jul 03, 2001 12:26pm CST tags: Intel
The Inquirer has gotten some details on Intel price changes. Not just CPU price drops, but it looks like Intel is increasing the rebate on RDRAM. Should be bringing it a bit closer to AMD again.

Intel Unveils Faster P4s

Jul 02, 2001 12:34pm CST tags: Intel
Intel is keeping the pressure on AMD, and has released two new Pentium 4 processors. They run at 1.6 ($294) and 1.8Ghz ($562). Intel also says a 2Ghz P4 will come later this quarter.

Compaq And Intel Chip Deal

Jun 25, 2001 8:59am CST tags: Intel
According to CNET, Compaq and Intel have signed a chip deal which will give Intel access to Compaq's Alpha chip technology. Most of the Alpha engineers will go to Intel, and Compaq will be using the 64-bit Itanium processor in their servers.

Intel Price Info

Jun 22, 2001 8:57am CST tags: Intel
For those interested in keeping up with Intel Pentium 4 price info, The Register has an overview. There are prices for the 2Ghz, 1.9Ghz, 1.8Ghz and 1.6Ghz versions of the P$.

Chipmakers Push Intel

Jun 21, 2001 9:43am CST tags: Intel
According to The Inquirer, other chipmakers are pushing Intel to take legal action against VIA. VIA is working on a Pentium 4 chipset, the P4X 266. Chipmakers ALi and SiS both have a license to build Pentium 4 chipsets, but VIA doesn't (or so Intel claims). Because VIA's chip will be much cheaper ($28 vs about $40), SiS and Ali want Intel to sue VIA .

Intel Ships New P3

Jun 19, 2001 4:24pm CST tags: Intel
CNet is reporting that Intel has started shipping their new Pentium 3. This is the first Intel CPU to use 0.13-micron manufacturing process. Previously it was 0.18 micron. The speed of this new "Tualatin" Pentium 3 is 1.13Ghz. Mobile version of this CPU will appear later next month.

1.8Ghz P4 on July 2

Jun 18, 2001 8:40am CST tags: Intel
According to the folks at The Register, Intel will be releasing a 1.8Ghz version of the Pentium 4 real soon. Real soon as in July 2. But will it actually be faster than an AMD processor? Heh.

Intel Micro Transistors

Jun 10, 2001 9:33am CST tags: Intel
Intel is all proud of this wacky new super-small transistor they have come up with which is being called micronized transistors. Interesting reading. Also here's a similar story thanks to /.

Intel Doing Better

Jun 08, 2001 9:29am CST tags: Intel
It looks like there are some signs of life in the semiconductor industry as Intel is reporting that they will actually be hitting revenue forecasts finally. Things had been sucking lately with a broad slump across the market.

Intel on VIA & Nvidia

Jun 07, 2001 9:37am CST tags: Intel, NVidia
There are some comments from Intel about VIA & NVidia saying they don't need these two chip makers at all. About VIA Intel VP Anand Chandrasekher said that they wouldn't be able to make a faster Pentium 4 chipset than Intel's own 850 chipset and while Chandrasekher thinks the nForce chipset is cool, he doubts it will find a place in the market.

Jun 04, 2001 1:29pm CST tags: Intel
Intel has announced their first non-Rambus chipset for the Pentium4 during the Computex show in Taipei. AnandTech has an article on this 845 chipset including an early performance benchmark. Thanks klerck.
