Intel 'Drops The Bomb'

Dec 20, 1999 12:29pm CST tags: Intel
Intel will announce today that it has started shipping of the 750 and 800mhz version of the Pentium 3 processors, taking away the speed crown from AMD for now. They will respectively be priced at $803 and $851. People buying from such companies as Dell won't be seeing it for another 20 - 30 days though, as supply is still a little short at the moment. Sharky Extreme already got their hands on these new processors, check the Tech section below for their review.

update: Haakon Larsen pointed out this article which sums up everything. Stating Intel drops the bomb on AMD

Pentium4 & AMD Next Year

Dec 14, 1999 4:30pm CST tags: Intel
It looks like PCWorld has the scoop on the upcoming Pentium4 CPU from Intel aka Willamette as well as some info on AMD's plans. The article talks about all kinds of coming attractions and I only spotted one error which was on the Intel P3-800mhz announcement. They are saying Intel is still shooting for next year, when in fact it looks lik Intel will announce the 800mhz P3 this next monday. Here's a big juicy bite:

AMD says to expect 800-MHz Athlon chips early in 2000, 900-MHz Athlons in late first quarter or early second quarter, and 1-GHz Athlons by the fourth quarter. ...and the Pentium IV chip, code-named Willamette, by the end of the year. Willamette is expected to handle more simultaneous instructions than the PIII, and to break the 1-GHz barrier. The accompanying chip set will likely support a 200-MHz system bus, like the Athlon's.

Incredible Intel Pricecuts

P3 800mhz

Dec 13, 1999 1:28pm CST tags: Intel
It looks like Intel has some good stuff happening for them. This MaximumPC article, and then this EETimes article (Thanks ArsTechnica for the links)both detail a breakthrough by Intel which happened a little while ago making it possible for them to begin shipping 800mhz P3 CPUs. I love this whole CPU race thing, Intel takes the lead again with 800mhz while AMD is at 750mhz. Of course a 750Athlon is probably faster than a 800P3, but still...

At this week's International Electron Devices Meeting, a top Intel engineer let loose that a fab process breakthrough has allowed the company to create 800MHz versions of their Pentium III chip and some have already shipped.
