Private Eye #2

Jul 23, 1999 9:15am CST tags: Hardware (PC only), Monolith
Sharky whips out his 'Private Eye' for all of us again, this time with tidbits and screenies of Monolith's LithTech 2.0 demo shown at E3. The second part is a short 3D card benchmark round-up on an AMD K6-III 450. Here's what I found to be the most interesting:

  • Intel has made a 'swift' turn-around and will possibly except [sic] (well 'evaluate' was the word I believe?) VIA's 133MHz technology as a possible interim RAMBUS solution.
  • Intel has scrapped plans for the Intel 754 graphics chip. This was to be their AGP4X solution for 1999. In a turn around, the company has deemed that the graphics accelerators due out in the second half of this year will be adequate solutions and have left the arena to pursue their mysterious Capitola project (high-end graphics for 2000).
  • Intel's Desktop Coppermine plans have taken a hit. Their .18micron Coppermine CPUs have been pushed back two months from a September release into November.

BX S370 reviews

Jul 23, 1999 9:02am CST tags: Hardware (PC only)
A pair of BX based S370 mobo reviews from AnandTech: first being the Supermicro 370SBA Review, and second being one that I've had my eye on for a while, the ABIT BP6 Review. What makes the BP6 special is that it supports UDMA66, but more importantly, it's a dual celeron motherboard ready for some Q3 SMP action.

More SMP Q3Test

Jul 22, 1999 6:27am CST tags: Q3Test, Hardware (PC only)
a|citizen goes that extra mile on the Team Abuse page with Q3 SMP info. His results are very impressive. He has posted a performance monitor screenie that exhibits what goes on with the CPUs with r_smp 0 and r_smp 1 during a timedemo. With SMP disabled, you notice that one CPU skyrockets and hangs around the maximum usage, but with SMP enabled, the workload is shared. One CPU is still workin' it a little more, but you can visibly see the difference in timedemo lengths.
