A new Steam update is now available, updating Half-Life 2 Lost Coast and the Source Engine. The Lost Coast update fixes a problem with the commentary, and with loading a savegame (where combine models would stand around).

This Steam news update has the word that at long last Valve's HDR tech demo Lost Coast is being released next week for Half-Life 2. After that is out, Valve plans to work on an update to the SDK as well as new content for Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source.

Over at bit-tech there is a new Lost Coast preview, offering impressions of the HDR add-on for Half-Life 2. For those of you expecting a ton of extra to play seeing how it's taken a while from announcement to release: "Before we received playable code, we asked innocently how many hours of gameplay there would be. In terms of end-to-end gameplay, the answer is measured in minutes, not hours".

A demo version of Dystopia is now available, allowing you to try out this Half-Life 2 cyberpunk mod - "As either Punks or Corp Mercenaries the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace. Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world, fight off enemy hackers or defend critical systems. Gameplay progresses through inter-linked physical and cyberspace objectives". For server admins we have some dedicated server files.

Also playable at the G-Phoria awards show last night was Half-Life 2: Lost Coast and GameSpot has impressions of that too. The visual difference isn't just in the high-dynamic-range lighting, as "the textures in Lost Coast are noticeably more detailed and numerous than in the retail game, and in addition to the immediate benefit of making this new level look especially neat, the release will also put these higher-quality assets into the game's SDK so modders can work with them".
