Guitar Hero DS Trailer Makes You Self Conscious

Jun 09, 2009 1:55pm CST tags: Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits, Trailer
The launch trailer for Vicarious Visions' Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits--the studio's third Nintendo DS Guitar Hero entry in under a year--may not compare to the High School Musical-like and How I Met Your Mother-esque trailers for the previous two games, but it's got something they didn't: extreme closeups of well-manicured nails.

Just look at those cuticles! The smooth and well-defined nail tips! I bet those things wouldn't even scratch a baby. Go ahead, look at your own wretched paws and lament the times when you dared dream of a hand modeling career. Packing 28 songs, but sadly lacking any sort of nail care pack-in, Modern Hits ships off the retailers today.

Vicarious Visions' third Guitar Hero release for the Nintendo DS, Modern Hits, will arrive on June 9, publisher Activision confirmed today alongside the full list of included tunes.

As with the first Guitar Hero On Tour, which arrived on June 22 2008, and the November-released sequel Decades, Modern Hits will make use of the Guitar Grip add-on that plugs into the DS's GBA slot--something the new DSi model lacks.

Guitar Hero DS 'Modern Hits' Officially Announced

Activision today formally announced Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits (DS), set for release this June.

The handheld game includes 28 master tracks from artists such as Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Tenacious D, The Strokes and Weezer. Sum 41's "Still Waiting," Franz Ferdinand's "The Fallen," and Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer" were previously revealed by the ESRB.

The game will feature a "Fan Request" feature, essentially acting as a challenge mode based on the game's multiplayer modifiers. Playing an entire song in "Hyperspeed" or whammying every hold note in a song were given as examples of challenges.

Three New Guitar Hero Games Coming This Year, Activision Planning 'Major Re-stage' of Franchise

Feb 11, 2009 4:40pm CST tags: Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits, Guitar Hero 5, Activision
During a conference call today, Activision confirmed three new Guitar Hero games, including a greatest hits compilation, a new DS game, and a "major restage."

Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits will appear on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, bringing full-band versions of major songs that have appeared in past guitar-only iterations. Greatest Hits marks the first major Guitar Hero title to not appear on the PlayStation 2.

Update: Activision has since announced Greatest Hits for the PlayStation 2.

Both Greatest Hits and the new Nintendo DS game will arrive over the summer. That Nintendo DS game is likely to be Guitar Hero: Modern Hits, which has been previously revealed via trademarks and listings but never officially confirmed.

In addition, Activision Publishing president Mike Griffin revealed that the company is planning a "major re-stage" of the franchise with "all new differentiated Guitar Hero products" in the second half of the year, presumably in the fall holiday season.

The three Guitar Hero games join Guitar Hero: Metallica, which hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 29, followed by PlayStation 2 and Wii editions later on. Activision is also planning to debut the spin-off DJ Hero franchise at some point in 2009.

ESRB Leaks Guitar Hero Modern Hits Details

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has struck again, leaking the first concrete information of the recently-trademarked Guitar Hero Modern Hits via its website.

In development for the Nintendo DS, Modern Hits will include Sum 41's "Still Waiting," Franz Ferdinand's "The Fallen," and Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer," going by the ESRB's rating page and the lyrics contained in the summary.

Modern Hits will mark the third Guitar Hero game for Nintendo DS. The previous two, both developed by Vicarious Visions, utilize a "Guitar Grip" add-on that plugs into the system's Game Boy Advance slot.

The first Guitar Hero DS, On Tour, arrived in June and subsequently broke sales records for publisher Activision. The second, Decades, released five months later.

Activision Trademarks Guitar Hero Modern Hits

Following Activision's plans to triple the amount of yearly Guitar Hero releases by 2012, the publisher has filed a trademark for the phrase "Guitar Hero Modern Hits."

Few details are known, though the phrasing seems to imply that the game will feature contemporary artists. The details of the application confirms that the phrase applies to "computer game software and related instruction manual sold together" and a "video game comprised of a cartridge or DVD sold as a unit with a video game controller."

In addition to the October 26 release of Neversoft's multi-instrument music game sequel Guitar Hero World Tour (PS2, PS3, 360, Wii), the company is also planning to release Vicarious Visions' second DS Guitar Hero, dubbed Decades, on November 16.

"You mention milking the franchise--I don't think we're doing that," Vicarious Visions producer David Nathanielsz told Shacknews when asked about the short span between the release of Guitar Hero: On Tour DS and the announcement of the sequel. "People are asking for songs, and that's what we're giving them."

This year also saw the debut of the first band-centric Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero Aerosmith (PC, PS2, PS3, 360, Wii), with upcoming releases believed to include Guitar Hero: Metallica and Guitar Hero: Jimi Hendrix.
