6-year-old Takes Video Game Skills to the Streets; Wrecks Car, Misses PE

Jan 06, 2009 3:34pm CST tags: Grand Theft Auto, Monster Truck Jam
Believing video games Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam had taught him how to operate a motor vehicle, a 6-year-old boy in Wicomico Church, Virgina attempted to drive himself to school in his family's 2005 Ford Taurus after missing the bus.

He made it nearly six miles, making two 90-degree turns and swerving off the rural road numerous times, before he finally hit a utility pole about a mile and a half away from school, according to The Associated Press.

"He was very intent on getting to school," noted Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE." He later told police he learned to drive in video games.

The unnamed boy arrived at school after lunch, following a trip to the hospital for minor injuries, including a bump on his head. He presumably missed PE.

His parents have been charged with child endangerment, possible because the mother was asleep when the child grabbed the keys and began his ill-fated journey. The boy and his 4-year-old brother are currently in protective custody.

The mother, 26-year-old Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, is being held without bond. The father, 40-year-old David Eugene Dodson, deposited a $5,000 bond for his freedom.

Take-Two Talks Grand Theft Auto Wii

While Rockstar's renowned Grand Theft Auto series will appear on the Nintendo DS this winter, publisher Take-Two Interactive is continuing to remain quiet on the possibility of a Grand Theft Auto entry on Wii.

When asked today about a possible Grand Theft Auto game for Wii, Take-Two CEO Ben Feder refused to specifically comment on the potential project, thought he stressed that Take-Two plans to keep growing its "relationship" with Nintendo.

"We've spent an enormous amount of time and effort working with Nintendo. We're very proud of the partnership," he noted. "GTA: Chinatown Wars is an important step [in that partnership]...and we intend to continue to grow that relationship."

Feder's response marks a curious shift in tone from an earlier comment last December, in which the company apparently denied a GTA entry on the Wii.

"No disrespect," a Take-Two representative said at the time, "[but] I think there are other titles better suited for the [Wii] than Grand Theft Auto 4."

Cops Say GTA Inspired Teen Crime Spree

A group of six teens who went on a late-night crime spree in Garden City, NY are now said to have been inspired by Grand Theft Auto.

Armed with baseball bats and crowbars, the kids collectively robbed a man of cash, stole cigarettes from a female driver, then "hit a passing van with a bat," according to Newsday. At one point the teens walked down a road, blocking traffic before harassing motorists.

"It was determined that they were emulating the character in that Grand Theft Auto game, going on a crime spree," said Nassau county police spokesman Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone. "We got certain admissions."

All of the delinquents are set to be arraigned today at the First District Court of Hempstead.
