GlobalOps Interview

Aug 03, 2001 8:41am CST tags: Global Operations, Interview
New on HomeLan this morning is a Global Operations interview, talking to lead designer Chris Mair about this FPS game. They talk about Barking Dog's work on Counter-Strike Beta 5, the class system in the game, the intelligence officer class, the weapons and much more.

HomeLAN - Much has been made of the large number of weapons that will be available in Global Ops. How did the team pick out which weapons to use for the game?
Chris Mair - We used armourers to help narrow down the weapons we would use. We studied the appropriate modern weapons that are in use and narrowed those down to around 40 weapons we liked. We then went to a private firing range where we could handle all the weapons and video tape and recorded them being fired. After that consultation we were able to narrow the weapons down to the 32 we currently have in the game. Some of the weapons like the Colt M4 Carbine or the AK-47 were obvious choices for the game. Others like the G-11 were picked because we liked their unique style.

Global Ops Preview

Jul 17, 2001 9:31am CST tags: Global Operations
Over at Gamespy is a pretty lengthy preview of Global Operations, giving a very good overview of this upcoming team based action FPS game from Barking Dog (CS beta 5). Besides plenty of new info, there are quotes from team members and also new screenshots. Here's a bit about the Intelligence Officer

The inclusion of an Intelligence Officer reveals a new layer for team-based tactics, implemented in response to gaming community requests for more control of communications in team-based games. The Intelligence Officer doesn't fight on the field. Instead, he receives information about his team via shoulder-mounted cameras and fixed cameras in the field (ie: security cameras). From a unique interface, the Officer monitors team health, specialties and locations and can distribute radio, text and voice commands as well as set waypoints on a map. This command level support allows players to maintain a sense of unity and awareness while bringing further tactical strategies to the gamer. Additionally, the Intelligence Officer may communicate with the living and the "dead." In this way, players in the field and players in Elysium maintain some level of understanding as to the team's position and strategies for success.
