Global Ops Update

Kicking Myself let us know about this forum post on the Global Operations message. Producer Dan McBride discusses the beta and the lack of quality servers. He says more high quality servers will be available at launch of the retail version of the tactical FPS. They are also testing their Linux server port at the moment. Here's what he had to say about lag

There have been many reports of high ping servers and general lagginess. We believe that these reports are largely due to any or all of the following conditions:

i) inadequate CPU on the server machine.
ii) inadequate bandwidth on server.
iii) upstream data spikes when clients joining. This problem appears to be worse than we had originally expected, we will be looking at flattening these spikes to minimize their effect.

We do quite complicated collision detection and ballistics, and the code was designed to have highly authoritative servers to preempt some forms of cheating. We will continue to optimize the server to improve performance and are confident that future versions will require less CPU power than is currently the case.

Global Operations Goes Gold

Mar 08, 2002 12:33pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, Global Operations, Gone Gold
EA sends word that Barking Dog's Global Operations has gone gold. The Lithtech powered tactical FPS should be shipping to stores March 26. Fileplanet should have a demo of the game later today.

Global Operations, co-published by Electronic Arts and Crave Entertainment, takes place in 13 real world locations and hot spots as well as featuring 32 real life weapons. Global Ops includes 26 elite fighting forces and will also feature a specialty class system for which players can choose from six customizable specialties including sniper, recon, medic and heavy gunner. Weapon ballistics are accurately modeled so that players can shoot through walls and ceilings depending on distance and caliber of weapon. Global Ops also features 14 military hardware items such as grenades, night vision goggles, thermal vision and various explosive devices. Multiplayer in Global Ops will support up to 24 players. The emphasis will be on co-operative play as teams try to accomplish a wide variety of mission types including hostage rescue, bomb diffusing, escort and base destruction. Players experience a unique troop reinforcement scheme which reinserts players into the game via a helicopter or truck. Global Operations will also feature a single player game with AI bots.

Global Ops Public Beta

Mar 05, 2002 9:53am CST tags: Global Operations, Beta
According to a slow loading forum post on the Global Operations forums, we'll be seeing a public beta of the tactical shooter soon. Meanwhile, the retail version of the game has been slightly delayed and will now be released March 26.

The next step is that we are going to convert our private beta to a public beta test which will be a freely available download. The Beta will feature one map of the game and will be playable online only. There should not be any major issues in the beta test, but if there are we will react quickly to squash them. The feedback that we will get from having tens of thousands of players playing online will be invaluable. Hopefully this beta will be available this week, maybe as early as Wed. News about the beta will be available at www.globalopsgame.com

Thanks Blues News.
