Steam Community Launching This Month

Jul 20, 2007 10:40pm CST tags: Valve, Steam, Games: PC
Valve has confirmed that the Steam Community, the studio's social networking and online multiplayer extensions for its popular game download service, will launch in beta form "at the end of the month," meaning gamers will have to wait no more than a week and a half to get their hands on the new features. The news was released via a Steam marketing message distributed through the software today.

First announced last month, the Steam Community promises features such as voice chat support, user profiles and groups, organized matches, and opponent tracking. "This latest update is just the start," said Valve founder Gabe Newell when Community was announced. "We've got a long list of items that we're working on to make it easier for gamers to connect and play games on Steam."

With Microsoft currently promoting its Games for Windows Live online service and marketing the service to PC game developers, it is likely that the Steam Community will find itself competing with the Microsoft-run initiative.

In other news, indie dev Chrono Logic's gooey physics-infused platformer Gish, winner of the 2005 Independent Games Festival, was today released via Steam for an initial price of $7.95.

Thursday Demo Theatre

Jul 19, 2007 3:13pm CST tags: MMO, Games: PC, Demo
So now that the E3 rush is over it, we can expect to see a few demos coming out over the next few weeks. Here is what has hit FileShack recently:
  • Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword Demo
This demo just hit the net in the past couple of hours so I can't tell you if it's any good, but it's hard to go wrong with a Civ game, isn't it? As an added bonus, you can test our new Quicksilver download servers with this demo. Hit it with a download manager and ten connections!
  • Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn Client
The grandfather of MMOs has been reborn. You can check out a trailer of the revamps before you go downloading a couple of gigs.
  • Upshift StrikeRacer Client
If car combat is your thing, this demo is probably worth checking out. It doesn't really have the graphics to blow you away but it's a nice distraction for about a half hour--although the gameplay isn't really all that hot either. Ok, it's probably not worth bothering. Sorry. ... Read more

Ubisoft's FarCry Sequel Confirmed

Jul 19, 2007 12:19pm CST tags: Ubisoft, Games: PC
Corroborating earlier rumors based on leaked information, Ubisoft today launched the official site for the sequel to the open-world PC shooter FarCry. The website briefly displays what appears to be an African landscape, before smashing to a large FarCry 2 logo.

Following FarCry developer Crytek's 2004 deal with publisher EA to create a new game--which eventually would become the much-anticipated shooter Crysis--Ubisoft was left alone with the rights to the FarCry franchise. News of the company's planned sequel broke after images were accidentally included in an Ubisoft press kit.

"Far Cry marked the beginning of a new era for shooters. An era... Read more

E3 07: Gears of War PC Preview

Jul 16, 2007 12:25pm CST tags: Epic Games, Games: PC, E3, E3 07
Epic Games plans to bring its system-selling Gears of War to Windows XP and Windows Vista users later this year, packaged with new single- and multiplayer content. I tried out the game with a good old mouse and keyboard, and talked with Epic producer Tanya Jessen about the additions. Check it out.
Most crucial to the game's multiplayer component is the new King of the Hill mode, which Jessen noted draws from the original existing Annex. In King of the Hill, players must capture different zones placed at random locations around the map and continually occupy them to accrue points over time. It makes use of execution rules, meaning players must finish off downed opponents lest they mash the action button fast enough to swallow the pain and rise again.

E3 07: Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance Impressions

Jul 13, 2007 5:21am CST tags: Games: PC, E3, E3 07
Gas Powered Games' stand-alone expansion for Supreme Commander may feature 110 new units and an entirely new race to play with, but I didn't really care about any of that going into my meeting with producer Jeremy Ables. All I cared about was whether or not the core game had been updated, and to my genuine delight, Ables elaborated on significant AI advancements, performance upgrades, UI redesigns, and a number of other improvements to the game as a whole. Check it out.
As tech 1 bombers streak across the sky to deliver their tiny payloads, the ground unexpectedly flares up into a streak of brilliant napalm. Nukes glide toward their targets leaving a weak of wavy heat in their path, anti-missile defenses arcing up to meet them in a flashy, satisfying collision. Spiderbots charge forward at high speed into the thick of a pitched battle, only to be met by alien tech 3 bombers that intelligently dart around each other, dropping energy bombs that explode into a blue nuclear blast wave. This doesn't seem like Supreme Commander, and we're not even into the real additions yet.

Valve's Steam to Feature Penny Arcade Comics

Jul 06, 2007 2:10pm CST tags: Valve, Steam, Games: PC, Penny Arcade
Hugely popular gaming-oriented webcomic Penny Arcade will be showcased through Valve's Steam service, Valve announced today. Currently, Penny Arcade strips up to Wednesday's edition are accessible through a simple browser in the Steam software.

Today's announcement may be indicative of a larger ongoing plan on Valve's part to expand the number of gaming-related services offered by Steam beyond its primary purpose of selling and managing digitally distributed games. Speaking to Shacknews in response to inquiries regarding today's announcement, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi noted that Valve hopes to continue expanding Steam out to support additional types of content.

Recently, the company laid out initial details for a suite of upcoming community features planned for Steam, transforming it into a social... Read more

Thursday Demo Theatre

Jun 28, 2007 3:30pm CST tags: Games: PC, Demo
Well we figure its about time we start throwing in a few more daily features around these parts. Thursday will now be getting the PC demo release treatment as Friday is the media roundup day. So what demos have come out in the last week? Let's take a look:
  • Quake 4 Multiplayer Demo
Support for Quake 4 has been admirable post-release, with continued patches. Its multiplayer demo is worth downloading just to see the Quake 4 version of a classic Quake II DM map. The comments, however, weren't so kind.
  • Harry Potter And The Order Of The Pheonix Demo
As far as Harry Potter games goes this one has been greeted surprisingly well. If you're into this sort of thing, it's worth checking out or sharing with the kids. I had a choice to either play this demo or hit myself with a hammer a few days ago. I chose the hammer. It greeted me well.
  • Bee Movie Game Demo
This one kind of flew under the radar (yeah, I said it). Unsurprising, since the release of the demo comes strangely early given the game's website notes it isn't planned for release until November 2007.
