Game Design School Gains University Accreditation

Mar 26, 2008 7:00pm CST tags: Full Sail, Game School, Game Design
Vocational college and game design school Full Sail Real World Education has been awarded University status by the state of Florida, the school announced today.

Founded in Winter Park, Florida in 1979, Full Sail offers degree programs in computer animation, game art, game development, digital arts and design, and several other programs. The private university currently serves over 5,800 students.

Alumni from the university have gone on to work at game development studios such as Infinity Ward, Insomniac Games, and EA Redwood Shores.

"We will continue to grow and carry on the tradition of empowering students with the knowledge necessary to pursue their educational and career goals, through our long-standing tradition of accelerated, real world education and immersive, project-based learning," said Full Sail University President Garry Jones.

The Finished Works of Game School Students

Jun 20, 2005 8:40am CST tags: Games: PC, Game School, Full Sail
We've seen the commercials for game schools and read about them on the Internet, but have you ever played a game designed and developed by the students of one of these places? Well, now's your chance, as a group of dedicated students from the Guildhall at SMU just released their total conversion mod of Half-Life 2 called Eclipse.

The game's story is thus: "You play as a young Sorceress named Violet whose father went missing five years back. After learning the secrets of Telekinesis, you are teleported into Auld-Haven, a lush and fertile land where Violet grew up. Your objective is to return to Violet's home where she last saw her father years ago and dig up any clues to his whereabouts."

The whole project was completed in five months with 20 people involved (3 faculty for guidance, 17 students). Download Eclipse from FileShack right here. If you're interested in what other schools are accomplishing, here's a demo reel from Full Sail and this page lets you download games by DigiPen students.

Late Night Consoling

Jun 15, 2004 10:00pm CST tags: Konami, Atari, Electronic Arts, Games: Console, Sony, Full Sail
As you may of noticed, I changed up how I handle the Misc. Media/Previews section. Quite simply, the link to the media/preview is now placed on the bolded name of the game. That area has always been a beast of its own, so please let me know if this helps out the situation by sounding off in the comments section. In other news, the story about the gaming camp is a bit humorous. Not too long ago, I was looking at the possibility of attending Full Sail, so one of the things I did was e-mail a ton of game developers and asked what they thought of the school and the students that came from it. The general response was neutral; Full Sail neither hurt nor enhanced my chances at 'making it' and I was probably better off learning on my own. Now that 'gaming school' is the big fad now, I would definitely love to hear the opinions of developers on the value their studio places in these institutions.
Xbox Oddworld 4 Picked Up by EA
It's funny how these stories happen. The day after it's revealed Atari has ditched its stake in Oddworld Inhabitants, it is revealed by an inside source to Computer and Video Games that Electronic Arts will publish the latest title in the Oddworld series, currently codenamed Stranger. An official announcement is to come from EA later this month. Also in this story it's revealed that Atari traded away their 50% stake in the company to Microsoft in exchange for publishing royalties. Pretty weird when you think about it; Microsoft ditched the publishing rights to Stranger not long ago. All in all, don't feel bad for the guys at Oddworld Inhabitants any more!
PS2 Sony Wants the Youth to Vote
Sony announced today they have partnered with the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN), a non-profit, non-partisan organization interested in reaching out to the youth of America to get out and vote. HSAN, which is chaired by renowned hip-hop artist and poet Russell Simmons, has already made two stops in Ohio and Michigan, with three more in the works. Each summit holds an open panel discussion on youth voting, empowerment, and community service which has seen such panel guests as Eminem and LL Cool J. Sony will provide a private PlayStation2 jet for those celebrities as well as have recent PS2 hits available to play and hold contests to win systems, games, and accessories.
Xbox Devs Talk Xbox Next
Although it has been rumored for a while now that Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox will be the first out the gate, possibily in 2005, IGN has been speaking to developers and came out of the discussions with some pretty interesting quotes. For instance, one dev commented, "Let's put it this way: A lot of developers crunching to get their games ready for a 2005 launch will be really pissed if Microsoft doesn't get it out by then." According to an employee of a major software company, they're expecting a November 2005 release, just in time for Christmas. The article also discusses the PS3 and mentions that some developers see it slipping to late 2007.

Metal Gear Comic
Konami and IDW Publishing have joined forces to bring Solid Snake into the world of comics. Coming this September, you'll find everybody's favorite stealth artist in his own comic book series. Written by Kris Oprisko and the art being handled by Ashley Wood, the comic is apparently in capable hands according to series creator Hideo Kojima. "Personally I have always been a fan of Mr. Ashley Wood. I am very glad that Metal Gear Solid will be made into a comic with his talented artwork," Kojima commented. "I have a lot of confidence in the people at IDW Publishing who understand the world of Metal Gear Solid. I have great hope for this new development of the series through the work of these people."

Video Game Camp
Want your kid to become the next Miyamoto? Then send him/her to the Videogame.net Experience 2004 videogame camp! Yes, someone actually has opened a game design camp for kids between the 6th and 12th grade level. Campers will get to use industry programs to learn how to design videogames. "In addition to teaching what is involved in making video games, the program also focuses on writing skills, critical thinking, presentations, sciences and math concepts," said Susan Fleming, Vice President of Curriculum Development. When I was younger, I had to go hiking and find ten different kinds of leaves.

Inventive locations and music, and comical sound effects. Maddeningly hard and clever." (submitted by dognose).

Late Night Consoling

Jun 07, 2004 10:00pm CST tags: Namco, Electronic Arts, Games: Console, Game School, Full Sail
Right now, I'm getting my butt kicked by a high fever, but I persevere to bring you the latest round of late night consoling! Being sick, I stayed home today from my day job and played Super Mario 64 the entire time. I'm a bit surprised at how well I'm doing, having accrued over 30 stars already. I wonder if I'm progressing so fast because of the years of experience of playing 3D platformers or that the game is just simpler the older you are? In any case, it's good to see it stand the test of time. I hate it when I go back to play an old favorite and feel like, "I liked this again why?"

University of Central Florida and EA to Open Game School
In a joint venture, Electronic Arts and the University of Central Florida are to open a new academy, the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, with the goal to teach students how to design, program, and test video games. The school is set to open in Fall 2005, located somewhere in downtown Orlando, and hopes to produce 100 graduates a year. Electronic Arts is helping create the curriculum and will offer internships to students and faculty, as well as provide staff to teach classes. Since I live here in Orlando, this'll definitely be interesting as they compete with the other famous game school, Full Sail, which is just minutes from UCF and the downtown area.
