WiiWare Game LostWinds Announced

Feb 20, 2008 8:13am CST tags: WiiWare, LostWinds, Frontier Developments
Frontier Developments, the studio behind games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Thrillville, has announced that it is developing and publishing a WiiWare game titled LostWinds.

In LostWinds you use the Wii remote to control Enril the wind spirit, using your elemental powers to guide a young boy Toku through the fantasy world of Mistralis. The place is under a curse, and Toku is the only one who can lift it.

"LostWinds is an innovative game, and an exciting project for many reasons," said Frontier founder David Braben, adding, "Not least the fact that it's one of the large number of excellent concepts that have arisen through our long running internal forum discussions on game ideas. Frontier is packed full of talented game enthusiasts, and contributing creative ideas and feedback is actively encouraged. WiiWare offers a perfect extra outlet for that creativity, and I hope that LostWinds is the first of many games that will follow this process."

Thrillville Loops Back for Sequel

Jul 03, 2007 2:45pm CST tags: LucasArts, Thrillville: Off the Rails, Frontier Developments
LucasArts today announced Thrillville: Off the Rails, the sequel to Frontier Developments' theme park strategy game. Billed as a console-centric, family-friendly approach to amusement park simulation, the series' next title will be appearing on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, and PC.

Off the Rails adds over 100 missions and 34 multiplayer theme-park games to its eclectic mix of gameplay. Players will be able to build 20 new "WHOA Coasters," which perform stunts such as leaping tracks and shooting through burning rings of fire. Smarter guests and in-depth dialogue will flesh out the story. The Wii remote will be supported for ride building and minigame play, and a unique, touch-screen enabled Nintendo DS version of the... Hey hey hey.
  • THE NEXT GENERATION OF VIDEO GAMES

    [ps3] [nintendo]

Some next-gen tidbits: (Be warned: there may be the words of analysts ahead; if you be offended by the words of analysts, just skip to a less offensive news item.)

    - Film industry trade magazine Variety chatted this weekend with Sony CEO Howard Stringer, who has now been holding the reins of the international electronics giant for a year. There was little spoken about the PlayStation 3, but Stringer did it indicate that it should be out by the holiday season. "If PS3 'delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up,' Stringer boasts." It's an oddly vague statement from the CEO of the company. The article also positioned the console as "the poor man's Blue-ray," which would probably send Ken Kutaragi into fits of rage if he were aware the PS3 is being described as a poor man's anything.

    - Faced with speculation that they may not see PS3 for another year, European retailers aren't too concerned. "PlayStation 3 will break all records whenever it launches," said Gamestation commercial director Martyn Gibbs. HMV head of games Tom Ellis was similarly optimistic, stating, "A later release gives 360 a better head start than Sony would want. But with PS2's massive installed base I doubt a delay would significantly undermine what PS3 will look to create."

    - Friedman Billings Ramsey analysts Shawn Milne sent out an investor update predicting, as many others have predicted, that PlayStation 3 will miss its planned spring launch in Japan. He went on to suggest that the console might also miss summer in Japan, and even the 2006 holiday season in North America, leaving Japan as the only territory to see the machine this year. Milne's estimates were based on his firm's semiconductor research.

    - GamesIndustry.biz spoke with various UK game industry types about what Nintendo needs to focus on to ensure retail success of Revolution. Peter Lunn of Nintendo distribution partner Koch Media suggests that the company will need to leverage "experiential marketing" to play up the console's unique features since it is not competing on a direct technical level with Sony and Microsoft's offerings. David Brabern of Frontier Developments points out that retailers are never too happy about console manufacturers selling software online, since it doesn't go through retail channels. Nintendo of course plans to offer games for purchase from its consoles' back catalogue. Perhaps the company could sell value cards in retail stores which could be used with the online service, similar to Microsoft's approach. Braben also rather obviously points out that since the console is not on a technological par with its competitors, it should also leverage its price advantage. Andrew Eades of Relentless Software believes that the system will have to be both "niche and mainstream," offering titles such as Zelda for hardcore gamers alongside titles for those who are less interested in "next-gen" and more interested in accessible entertainment. He points to the DS lineup as an example of this mentality

  • Atlus Makes Contact With DS, GBA

    [ds] [gba]

Atlus has announced its intention to publish Contact, the DS RPG from Killer7 designer Goichi Suda. The title is produced by Suda and designed by Akira Ueda, best known for Shining Force and various SNES Square titles. Character design is being handled by Atsuko Fukushima, who most recently worked on PoPoLoCrois (PSP), and the game is being developed by Suda's studio Grasshopper Manufacture. It features two deliberately contrasting graphical styles on the two screens; the bottom screen has lush high-color artwork, while the top screen features old school graphics reminiscent of a stripped down Earthbound. The game features realtime combat and apparently makes good use of the system's two screens. Most curiously, it also goes online by way of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which is certainly a first for a DS RPG. It's anybody's guess what it actually does once it's online.

Contact is expected to ship in North America this summer. - Screenshots. Press release.

The publisher also announced that it will be handling the North American versions of two titles in the Super Robot Taisen series, a franchise that has existed for over 15 years in Japan. The games are strategy RPGs in the time-honored giant robot tradition, with the ability to customize the mech units.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation will ship this summer, with the sequel Original Generation 2 hitting in the fall. - Screenshots. Press release.

  • THQ Gets Juiced

    [ps2] [xbox] [psp]

Publisher THQ has announced its complete acquisition of UK developer Juice Games, the studio behind last year's street racer Juiced (PS2, Xbox, PC). That title was published by THQ, and is the only title the studio has yet released for home consoles. The studio is currently working on bolstering the PSP's racing lineup with a PSP-exclusive entry in the Juiced franchise, Juiced: Eliminator. Juice Games senior VP of business development Dan Kelly indicated that the studio is also interested in moving outside of its eponymous franchise: "We look forward to the studio bringing more ground-breaking games to the Juiced franchise as well as developing new intellectual properties."

Juiced: Eliminator is due this summer. - Press release.

  • Giggity Giggity Giggity

    [ps2] [xbox] [gamecube]

2K Games announced today that it will be publishing upcoming Family Guy licensed games developed by High Voltage Software. In development for "current generation consoles," which presumably means PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, the games are being worked on "closely with Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane." Recently, High Voltage has been best known for Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude (PS2, Xbox, PC) but has also worked on other licensed tie-ins such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. - Press release.

  • Destroy All Humans Destroys All Prices

    [ps2] [xbox]

Pandemic's campy role-reversal sci-fi title Destroy All Humans (PS2, Xbox), released last year, seems to have done pretty well for itself. It has reached the necessary sales figures to get it on each console's value price point line: PS2's Greatest Hits and Xbox's Platinum Hits. Both versions of the game now have an MSRP of $19.99. - Press release.

  • Next Generation Strategery

    [ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo] [ds] [psp]

CDV Software Entertainment and Digital Reality have formed a partnership to develop and publish a range of strategy titles for next-generation home consoles and portables. Digital Reality is a developer of strategy titles exclusively, using its own Walker 3 engine allowing RTS games to be played from a first person perspective as well as the traditional third person. The two companies will operate jointly under the name WHIZ Software Kft. There are no details yet on WHIZ's first title, but it has a planned release period of Q4 2007. - Press release.

  • Outfit Demo Outfitted

    [xbox360]

The briefly postponed multiplayer demo of Relic's The Outfit (X360) was posted on Xbox Live for download today. THQ heralds it as "the first ever pre-launch Xbox 360(tm) online multiplayer demo." - Press release.

  • TGS Game Announcements

[ps2] [xbox] [gamecube] [ps2] [xbox] [gamecube]

Tokyo Games Show is now actually getting underway, and with it come more game announcements. Here they are, grouped by platform and sorted alphabetically by title. Descriptions will be brief and in many cases nonexistent:

    - Alone in the Dark on PS3: Sony announced that Atari will be bringing the Alone in the Dark franchise to PS3, though a specific developer was not named.
    - Brothers in Arms 3 (PS3): Sony also revealed that Ubisoft will be bringing Gearbox's well-received Brothers in Arms franchise to PS3 with the third game in the series.
    - Fatal Inertia (PS3): Koei's Omega Force team, best known for the perennial Dynasty Warriors line, has a PS3 launch game in the works. Inertia will be a futuristic battle racing game.
    - Front Mission 5 (PS2): Square Enix announced and released trailer footage for Front Mission 5: Scars of the War, the newest in the popular strategy series. The game will hit Japanese PS2s this December.
    - Gradius on PS3: Not too surprisingly, Konami's long-running Gradius series will be appearing on the PS3. No details are available, but you'll probably fly a ship around and shoot things.
    - Jikkyo Powerful Pro Baseball: Konami will be bringing its big-in-Japan Jikkyo Powerful Pro Yakyuu kyu franchise to Sony's next-gen system. The series is known for its wacky take on America's Favorite Pasttime.
    - KOF Maximum Impact 3 (PS3): SNK Playmore announced King of Fighters Maximum Impact 3 for PS3 today. No details available.
    - Makai Wars on PS3: Despite a continued lack of signs of life regarding the PSP version, Nippon Ichi has announced that the strategy series Makai Wars will be coming to PS3. No specific details were revealed.
    - New RPG for PS3: Namco announced that a new RPG of some kind is in the works for PS3. No information is available.
    - New shooting game for PS3: Namco also announced that some kind of shooting game is also in the works for PS3. No information is available.
    - Tenchu game for Xbox 360: From Software announced a new Tenchu game, though did not reveal any details. The studio is currently also working on the already-announced Chromehounds (X360), [eM] -eNCHANT arM- (X360), and Armored Core 4 (PS3).
    - Baten Kaitos II (GCN): Namco and Monolith Soft are developing a prequel to the GameCube RPG Baten Kaitos. The game will take place 20 years before the first title, with a new set of characters as well as most likely some returning ones from Baten Kaitos. It will also feature new environments as well as revisted ones.
    - SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS: SNK has is developing a sequel to the fan favorite SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters for Neo Geo Pocket Color. The followup will be released next year for DS, and apparently features the work of SNK artist Falcoon.
    - Suikoden I&II (PSP): Konami is bringing the first two Suikoden titles to PSP. It seems there will be new anime-style cutscenes, but it is unknown whether the gameplay will be modified.
  • Microsoft Continues Pushing HD Era

    [xbox]

Though the Revolution-revealing keynote by Nintendo's Satoru Iwata has been the biggest news of TGS thus far, Microsoft's Robbie Bach also delivered his own address before Iwata's. Microsoft seems to be sticking to its guns with its HD Era pitch, with the keynote title being "The Dawn of a New Era" (you know, the HD one). Another main point was the dovetailing between Windows PCs and Xbox 360s, which will work together in order to form the centerpiece of consumers' digital lifestyle.

That good old CliffyB, who seems to be rapidly becoming Microsoft's favorite Xbox 360 poster boy, also came to the stage to give his schtick on Epic's upcoming Gears of War (X360).

Bach also explained the workings of Xbox Live, though the information all seemed like details that have already been outlined. He also paid his compliments to Nintendogs (DS), something that even portable Nintendo challenger Sony has acknowledged positively, as being a good example of customizability in video games. The Xbox 360 apparently also aims to deliver customers with a customizable experience.

As far as the PS3, Bach claimed that the system will be roughly comparable to Xbox 360 in terms of power, but that Xbox 360 will deliver a better personalized and online experience, making it the superior console. He also claims that Xbox 360 will be more than just a game system. This is a claim that has also been made by Sony regarding most of their gaming products; Nintendo has rarely if ever made similar statements regarding their systems.

Of course, Bach was also sure to reiterate his company's devotion to the Japanese market, claiming that while Microsoft did not see much success there in the last generation he expects a very different situation starting with Xbox 360's release.

  • PS3 Itself Absent from TGS

    [ps2]

IGN reports that amongst all the trailers and announcements, there are not actually any playable PS3 consoles at Tokyo Games Show. When questioned regarding the prospects of the system itself being on display in the near future, Sony provided no response. So, we'll see. The system won't be out for a while, though, so there's plenty of time.

  • Jack Thompson Still Easily Irritable

Everyone's favorite wacky attorney Jack Thompson has slammed Rockstar Games for a fictional website set up by the company. The suggestively-abbreviated Citizens United Negating Technology website is linked from Rockstar's GTA: Liberty City Stories website. The GTA:LCS site also includes an email from "JT@CitizensUnitingNegatingTechnology", explaining that "Only last week, I was using the Internet to look up some information for my 15 year old niece, who is a keen water skier and state wide sailor. Trust me when I say this - searching under the subject matter "Teenage girls water sports" is not for the faint hearted." It also notes that "the Internet is an unambiguous evil," and "the only things worse than the Internet are computer games and liberals."

    Thompson in response:

"Take-Two/Rockstar has created and paid for an actual Internet website for the purpose of furthering the notion that its most abiding and most effective critic, Jack Thompson, is himself a sexual pervert. When you click on the fake email, you will find that JT (Jack Thompson) likes to surf the Internet for pictures depicting deviant sex acts by teenage girls. Additionally, there is at the site an audio ad featuring a man whose name is "Jack" who is found naked by a mother in her son's room. Bisexual paedophile Jack Thompson is the combined message."

The other combined message is "extremely annoying and hilarious Jack Thompson."

  • The Outsider on Next-Gen

    [ps2] [xbox]

Frontier Developments, the studio behind the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise and Dog's Life (PS2) (which was actually pretty fun), is developing a new action thriller for next-gen systems, most likely PS2 and Xbox 360. The announcement was not made at Tokyo Games Show. The game will be politically-oriented and will apparently strive to give players a wide range of choices in their actions.

A more detailed description is here, in which David Braben, chairman of the independent studio, claims that the game will be one of a new breed of games going beyond effects-driven action titles.
