Far Cry 2 Multiplayer Modes Detailed, No Demo

Sep 19, 2008 4:32pm CST tags: Far Cry 2
Ubisoft Montreal's upcoming open-world shooter Far Cry 2 (PC, 360, PS3) will have a full slate of multiplayer options, but won't come with a demo before or after the game's release.

"Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond... and Uprising" will be available multiplayer modes, according to producer Louis-Pierre Pharand in an interview with EuroGamer. Capture the Diamond is capture-the-flag reworked to honor the game's African setting, whereas Uprising is "a modified version of a VIP [mode]."

To the chagrin of sample-loving gamers, Pharand added that the game will not have a demo. "No demos will be available," he asserted. "It became too complex to do a demo of an open-world game."

Far Cry 2 adds to an increasing trend of open-world games not coming with demos. The full game, boasting 50 square kilometers of world, will hit North America on October 21 and Europe on October 24.

Far Cry 3 in 'Preliminary Stages,' Will Probably Stay in Africa

Aug 27, 2008 9:45am CST tags: Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, Ubisoft
With Ubisoft Montreal's open-world shooter Far Cry 2 due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, narrative designer Patrick Redding has confirmed that a third Far Cry game is in the "preliminary stages" and will likely share the sequel's African setting.

Ubisoft Montreal's Far Cry 2

"For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise," Redding told videogaming247. "Let's face it, jungle islands are probably less exciting as they were four years ago."

The original Far Cry, developed by Crytek and released for PC in 2004, took place on a tropical island. A scaled-down re-imagining was later brought to Xbox 360, Xbox and Wii by Ubisoft Montreal.

"There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it's safe to say we'll continue to explore it," Redding explained. "That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we'e still at the preliminary stages."

Far Cry 2 Interview: Ubisoft's Clint Hocking on Missions, Multiplayer Maps and Discarded Features

Jul 22, 2008 2:41pm CST tags: Far Cry 2, Interview, E3 2008
The Far Cry 2 level on display at E3 was the same one we got a look at a few weeks ago, and I managed to play through it in an almost identical fashion.

After embarrassing myself with a flamethrower for a few minutes, I chose to put down the weapon and speak with Ubisoft's Clint Hocking. The Far Cry 2 creative director revealed details on a freshly cut feature, the game's expansive multiplayer functionality, and a few detailed examples of what we'll be doing in the full version of the open world shooter.

Clint Hocking: I wish we'd made [the game] shorter in hindsight. Because it's so hard for us to test everything--the game is so massive. I'll be driving around, I'll get in a chase, and I'll have to take a turn that I haven't taken in a long time. I'll end up off-road, my vehicle will break down, I'll kill the guys chasing me, and I'll be like, "..where the fuck am I?" I'll be looking around in my game that I've been working on for three years. Read more..

Far Cry 2 Hands-on Preview

May 28, 2008 12:00pm CST tags: Far Cry 2, Preview
"I can't even be showing you this. You're totally out of the demo area. But the world is there."

Is it ever. Lead artist Alex Amancio is taking us off the beaten path near the end of my look at Far Cry 2. I see thatched roof huts, brightly colored graffiti sprayed across the walls. Sun-soaked stones line the clear river behind me, a jagged cliff to my front. Far below is a yellow grassland that stretches on for miles. A few convincing water buffalo stand grazing off in the distance, a shot right out of No Country.

Variety is the key to understanding what Far Cry 2 is about. It's a full menu of a game, a long list of cool features, interesting twists, and surprising detail.

That detail seems to permeate every facet of the game's design. Every area is richly textured and wholly different from the last. Every enemy has a totally unique appearance. Every weapon degrades and ages over time.

It is fitting that a shooter based on presenting the player with options has spawned two very different sequels. With an open world of 50 square kilometers, a branching mission-based plot powered by a GTA-like cellphone, and an engine built for cross-platform performance, Ubisoft's Far Cry sequel is a wholly different take on the concept than we saw with Crytek's Crysis.

And while I definitely enjoyed Crysis for what it was, Far Cry 2 is shaping up to have far more gameplay potential. ... Read more

Far Cry 2 Confirmed for Fall 2008 Release

Mar 26, 2008 2:06pm CST tags: Far Cry 2
Far Cry 2 (PC, PS3, X360) is now scheduled for release in the fall of this year, Ubisoft revealed in a production video released today. The title had previously been slated for a vague fiscal year 2008-2009 release.

Made without the involvement of series creator Crytek, which sold the Far Cry rights to Ubisoft in 2006. Crytek moved on to Crysis (PC) and other projects while Ubisoft Montreal was tasked with Far Cry 2.

The new title ditches the mutants, feral abilities and protagonist of 2004's Far Cry and its expansions, choosing instead to present a brand new experience in an open-ended and non-linear world.

"The team has been working extremely hard to ensure that there are no compromises made for quality or features on each platform," said Ubisoft Montreal producer LP Pharand.

Crysis Movie Planned; Crytek CEO Discusses Possible Buyout, Far Cry 2, Faster Development

Feb 08, 2008 9:14pm CST tags: Buyout, Crytek, Crysis, Far Cry 2
A feature film based on Crytek's platinum-selling sci-fi FPS Crysis (PC) is in the planning stages, reports Kotaku. "A Crysis movie is definitely planned," revealed Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "We are in active talks already. I think we will close this topic before the end of this year."

A film based on Crytek's previous title, Far Cry, is currently in post-production. It was directed by the ever-reviled Uwe Boll before he resigned from big-budget projects, and guest stars Anthony Bourdain, the world-traveling maverick chef.

Though Boll's past efforts have transformed Sega's House of the Dead and Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege franchises, among others, into poorly received box office releases, Yerli is still eager to see the film.

"Unfortunately, we have not been involved in the film since very early when it was a script," explained the CEO. "However, I think the script changed and improved radically since then, at least I hope it has, since I can't wait to see the movie."

Other topics discussed by Yerli included the possibility of Crytek being acquired by a larger publisher--"If it were a cultural fit, yes, but we would have strong... Read more
