Hands-on with Duke Nukem 3D XBLA: Screenshots, Footage of the New Replay Feature

These days, there are probably a lot of gamers out there that haven't played Duke Nukem 3D. Now that 3D Realms' classic shooter is hitting Xbox Live Arcade, they might wonder what all the fuss is about, like a "movie fan" who loves The Sopranos and still hasn't seen Goodfellas.

But after giving Duke another spin, trading in keyboard and mouse for trigger and analog stick, I was relieved to see how well it's held up. It's still an enjoyable FPS, an innovative game that even today is worth playing for the first time. To have it ported to the smoothest multiplayer platform in the business, and updated with new features and bonus content, will be a real treat for Duke virgins and veterans alike.

The port's new replay feature will go a long way toward justifying this purchase for the latter group. Simply stated, Duke 3D XBLA is always recording as you play, saving every second of your current run.

Duke Nukem 3D XBLA Getting September Release, New Features: Saved Replays, Gameplay Rewind

The impending Xbox Live Arcade release of 3D Realms' classic PC shooter Duke Nukem 3D will feature the ability to rewind gameplay and save clips from multiplayer, publisher Microsoft has revealed to Joystiq.

Similar to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Braid, the rewind functionality allows players to reverse time and replay a part of the single player campaign, allowing them to make another go at firefights and perhaps prevent their untimely demise.

Meanwhile, the saved film feature lets players preserve multiplayer battles and share the replays with other Xbox Live users, calling to mind Halo 3's similar functionality.

While the game's price point has yet to be announced, Microsoft's Jason Ing told Joystiq to expect the downloadable Xbox 360 title and its poop-stepping, stripper-tipping achievements "sometime in September."

Update: 3D Realms' George Broussard has confirmed to Shacknews that the Xbox Live Arcade edition of Duke Nukem 3D is indeed complete, has passed certification and is due out "soon."

"We officially passed final cert on our first try Friday, August 15th," said Broussard. When asked about a possible price point, he noted that it will be "about what you'd expect." While Broussard's comments are open to interpretation, most XBLA releases are priced between 800 ($10) and 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

In a separate posting on its official website, 3D Realms affirmed that the game's release "is now in the hands of Microsoft."

Update: More shots have popped up on Plaza.Fi, JeuxVideo Kotaku and V2.fi.

Given the flood of screenshots from various outlets and languages, it is likely that the port has appeared on PartnerNet, a closed Xbox Live network only accessible through development kits and debug units.

PartnerNet availability would also suggest that the price point of 1337 Microsoft Points ($16.71), as specified in one of the shots, is placeholder.

Shacker ease one reports that the 83 MB Xbox Live Arcade port of Duke Nukem 3D is indeed downloadable through the closed PartnerNet network, though the current build only "displays a rotating poly and that is it."
