Microsoft revealed today that Funcom's Dreamfall: Game of the Year Edition (PC, Xbox) is the newest addition to the Xbox 360's online Xbox Originals catalog, and will be available this coming Monday.

Originally released in 2006, Dreamfall is the acclaimed sequel to Funcom's The Longest Journey (PC) and often noted as a highlight of the adventure gaming genre. The downloadable title will be priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

After less than stellar retail sales of Dreamfall, Funcom announced Dreamfall Chapters, an episodic continuation of the series' storyline. Since the announcement, however, Funcom has remained mum on the episodic series' development.

Dreamfall marks the latest addition to the Xbox Originals catalog which launched late last year. Other Xbox Originals releases include Bungie's Halo, Double Fine's Psychonauts, and Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden Black, all priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

The Longest Journey to Continue Episodically

Funcom last year released Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, the second game in writer/designer Ragnar Tornquist's adventure game series that began in 1999 with the acclaimed The Longest Journey. Despite positive critical reception, Dreamfall was not a sales blockbuster; during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Jorgen Tharaldsen of Funcom noted to Shacknews that the company anticipated such a situation, seeing the game in some ways as a labor of love. Still, Funcom appears to have every intention to continue the saga, and in doing so it is becoming the latest studio to adopt the episodic development model.

Funcom has announced Dreamfall Chapters, an episodic series of games that will continue the story told in The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. The project has been facilitated in party by a grant from the Norweigan government, which the Oslo-based company will use to set up a core technology team for episodic content. Dreamfall Chapters seems to be only the first step in the company's long term plans for the franchise; the announcement note that an MMO based on The Longest Journey might at some point be developed. Funcom is no stranger to the MMO world, with Anarchy Online released in 2001 and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures set for release later this year.

"We will be researching an online-only continuation of the epic 'Longest Journey' saga, and we very much look forward to develop new chapters to the Dreamfall gaming community," said Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. "To see the Norwegian government take such an active role in nurturing the local game development industry is impressive. In return for their trust we aim to deliver a modern adventure game with unique qualities."

There have been no details released as to the content or gameplay of Dreamfall Chapters. Funcom notes that episodes will be initially released for PC via online distribution only, but may see later retail releases and console versions. No projected release period for the first installment was given.

On his personal blog, Tornquist addressed the announcement. "The episodic format is perfect for the continuation of the story--it's something I’ve been thinking about for ages," he wrote, "and while I can't offer any details about size or cost, we want to provide our fans with good value for money." Apparently attempting to preemptively respond to fans hoping for a single full-scale sequel, he added, "Don't lose sight of the big picture, guys (and girls). The fact is, we listened to you, we heard you, we decided we wouldn't leave you hanging. The saga continues. Now how cool is that? Rejoice!"

Shack Feature Preview: Dreamfall

Remember adventure games? With its sequel to the acclaimed The Longest Journey, Funcom and designer Ragnar Tornquist are attempting to innovate within the once proud genre. Check out my preview and interview on Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, heading to PC and Xbox this spring. Also, check out this recent trailer on FileShack if you missed it.
The Longest Journey told the story of heroine April Ryan, who embarked on, appropriately enough, a rather long journey that straddled contrasting worlds of science and magic. The game was released to rave reviews and gained a devoted following. In the years following its release, Funcom has mainly been known for the MMO Anarchy Online. In 2003, however, the developer started working on a followup to The Longest Journey, fully titled Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Dreamfall is set for release on Xbox and PC this spring. Having seen the game in various stages of development over the last couple years, I recently had the opportunity to pick the brain of designer Ragnar Tornquist to hear his general thoughts on the game as well as some of the reasoning behind the significant changes between the first installment and its sequel.

About Dreamfall : The Longest Journey

If you think adventure games suck, go here. The rest of you will probably be interested in the follow-up to "The Longest Journey". If you don't know the game, read more about it here.

Now then, "Dreamfall : TLJ" is a follow-up to 2000's hit adventure game. The story will once again focus on April Ryan, but other then that it will only be slightly related to the first game. You'll also be able to play other characters. Dreamfall will be more action-oriented then the first game, inspired by games like KOTOR, Shenmue, Prince of Persia and Silent Hill. The game will take place in a science-fantasy world, with locations from casablanca to Japan. And if you think that sums it up, think again.

According to the creative manager, the game will not have louzy controls or crappy voice-acting. He hates those with a passion. And, just like the first game, the sound will be top-notch. Encoded in 7.1 surround. I'm growing old, I remember the time stereo was good enough for everyone...
