Dragon Age: Origins Delayed? (Updated)

Aug 07, 2009 11:38am CST tags: Dragon Age, Delay

Update 2: The delay has now been made official by BioWare. The PC and Xbox 360 editions are now due to hit North America on November 3, with the PlayStation 3 version slated to arrive at some unknown point later in the month.

Update: BioWare has chimed in on the matter, telling Shacknews that it is "still targeting an October 20 release date" for Dragon Age: Origins and adding that "if the release date changes, we'll issue a press release."

Original: Those that have been waiting years for Dragon Age may have to wait a few more weeks, as it's beginning to look like BioWare's latest RPG won't hit consoles in October.

While BioWare and studio owner Electronic Arts have yet to officially acknowledge a delay, online rental hub GameFly is now listing the Xbox 360 edition for November 3 with the PlayStation 3 release following on November 19. The change was just made this week; GameFly had previously listed the game's announced release... Read more

Dragon Age Xbox 360 Hands-on Impressions: 'She'll Really Do Anything'

Jun 02, 2009 9:45pm CST tags: Dragon Age, E3 2009
One of the lingering questions about Dragon Age was how it'll play on a console.

Primarily developed for the PC, the game features plenty of World of Warcraft-style action buttons across the bottom of the screen in that build of the game. Porting that directly to consoles would seem a challenge.

After getting my hands on the Xbox 360 version, outfitted with a prototype interface, that question was answered soundly: it plays fine. Three of the face buttons are mapped to spells, and the left trigger acts as an alt-toggle, offering six mappings to the PC version's ten. One bumper key takes over healing duty, leaving only a three-button disparity between the two builds.

Unfortunately, beyond the controls, I came away from the Dragon Age E3 demo feeling oversold--particularly on its sexuality--and ultimately underwhelmed.... Read more

Dragon Age Has Gone to the Dogs

May 13, 2009 7:04pm CST tags: Dragon Age
A recent update to the Dragon Age website brings us a look at the Mabari war hounds, creatures that players will either control or battle, depending on the circumstance.
Writes BioWare of the beasts: "Trained hounds can easily pull knights from horseback or break lines of pike men, and the sight and sound of a wave of war dogs, howling and snarling, has been known to cause panic among even the most hardened infantry soldiers."

Dragon Age: Origins hits the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime this fall.

Dragon Age's New Direction Heralded with 'New Shit'

May 10, 2009 5:54pm CST tags: Dragon Age, Trailer
I don't really know what to say about this Dragon Age: Origins (360, PS3, PC) trailer. BioWare calls it the "most brutal and blood-soaked video we've ever created.. a 'no holds barred' look at the most intense action ever seen in the history of BioWare games."

The company says this "shit" represents a "new direction for Dragon Age: Origins"--apparently confirming a shift from its roots in the old shit.

Dragon Age Pen and Paper RPG Coming This Summer

May 05, 2009 4:11pm CST tags: Dragon Age
BioWare announced today that it has partnered with Green Ronin Publishing to launch a Dragon Age-themed pen and paper RPG this summer.

The first release of the RPG will be in the form of a boxed set. Additional boxed sets and books are already planned for release.

"Our development teams craft rich, deep worlds, and this is an excellent way to expand the franchise," said BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka.

Dragon Age DRM Plans Divulged

May 04, 2009 6:57pm CST tags: Dragon Age
Developer BioWare has announced its plan to protect copies of the upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins.

"We're happy to announce that the boxed/retail PC version of Dragon Age: Origins will use only a basic disk check and it will not require online authentication," said BioWare community man Chris Priestly in a post on the game's official forum.

"In other words, the retail PC version of the game won't require you to go online to authenticate the game for offline play," he added. "We have chosen not to use SecuROM in any version of Dragon Age that is distributed by EA or BioWare."

Dragon Age: Origins arrives this fall on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

BioWare: Dragon Age DLC Could Last Two Years

Apr 06, 2009 6:02pm CST tags: Dragon Age, DLC
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has said that his company's upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins might be supported by downloadable content for up to two years.

"With Dragon Age, our DLC strategy is doing it in maybe a year and-a-half or two years, planning exactly when you're going to do it and how you're going to do it," said Zeschuk to MTV.

Zeschuk was of course vague in his description of said content.

"Some of our fans would really like us to extend the world, so it's going to be something that will make the world even bigger and more interesting," he offered. "It's not going to wreck it or break it."

Dragon Age: Origins is coming this fall on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Dragon Age Origins Preview: Unicorn Dreams

Apr 01, 2009 2:58pm CST tags: Dragon Age
"This isn't a game about unicorns," said Dragon Age: Origins lead designer Mike Laidlaw, and my eyes glazing over at knights and elves, I began to think about that game. Would you ride the unicorns? What would the mechanics be like?

Of course, then I remembered Peggle, and its insipid unicorn mascot. "Thank god Dragon Age is not about unicorns," I concluded thoughtfully, not knowing I would come to regret my snap judgment.

"Each of the characters will have a running tally of whether they like or dislike the choices you make."

Jesus, I was missing the demonstration. Okay, time to catch up--dark fantasy story, check. Dark fantasy characters, check. Dark, fantastically slutty sorceress to slap on the box--check, check.

The primary purpose of this GDC demo was to tout a few new battle and RPG systems. To do this, the developers loaded up a quest hub and dropped us straight into a scenario. The town of Redcliffe served as the setting, it being one... Read more

Interview: BioWare Heads Talk Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic

Mar 30, 2009 4:02pm CST tags: Mass Effect 2, GDC 09, Dragon Age, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Interview
It's a little mindboggling to think of how big BioWare has gotten over the past few years.

On the one hand, the company is developing two major RPGs in Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. That alone would be an impressive showing.

But on top of those titles, BioWare is also tackling a new Star Wars MMO--a project so daunting, and potentially lucrative, that it almost dwarfs the more traditional efforts.

At last week's Game Developers Conference, I caught up with BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk. While I could have easily spent my limited time asking about just one of the projects, I tried to cover all three with a few questions apiece--starting with the old-school RPG being demonstrated next door. ... Dragon Age Screenshots Bring Novel to Life

Mar 05, 2009 5:25pm CST tags: Dragon Age, Screenshots
Still bummed that you have to wait until October, at the earliest, to play Dragon Age? Well, Tor Books is looking out for you, as the book publisher has released a prequel novel, Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne, that was written by David Gaider.

In celebration, developer BioWare issued a few new screenshots, said to depict scenes from the novel that also occur within the PC and console-bound fantasy RPG.
