Deus Ex 3 May Not Hit Consoles, Developer Claims Original Wasn't Exciting Enough

While it was initially believed that the long-awaited third Deus Ex game would hit PC and consoles, a new interview with Eidos Montreal lead designer Jean-Francois Dugas suggests that the 2009-due shooter-RPG prequel could be a PC-exclusive.

"We don't know exactly which platforms we're going to be out on," he explained to Edge. "If we're to go console we will want to keep the complexity alive. We want the menu interface and controller to feel simple without risking any of their potential."

Both the Ion Storm-developed original Deus Ex and sequel arrived on PC and consoles--the first hitting PlayStation 2, the second arriving on Xbox--with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360-friendly Tomb Raider engine powering Deus Ex 3.

Dugas further commented that "for us, console-isation isn't about... Read more

As teased, the first details on Eidos Montreal's long-awaited Deus Ex 3 have been revealed, shedding new light on the shooter-RPG that's due in late 2009.

Captures from the initial teaser trailer.

Set as a prequel to Ion Storm's original two entries, the title has the blessing of both Deus Ex and Deus Ex 2 designers Warren Spector and Harvey Smith. In addition, Deus Ex series writer Sheldon Pacotti has been brought on as a consultant.

As the new information appeared in the pages of PC Zone magazine, a PC version is given. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions are expected, especially given its use of the Tomb Raider engine, though the developer has yet to confirm those platforms.

We'll finally hear more about Deus Ex 3--the sci-fi RPG sequel in development at Eidos Montreal--next month, courtesy of a magazine preview.

The NeoGAF forums play host to a scan of a teaser image from PC Zone magazine. "The conspiracy is revealed..." it reads, playing on the series' longstanding exploration into popular conspiracy theories. An image of a human heart is in the background, adding to anatomical themes first seen in the game's teaser trailer, which was released in late 2007.

The news would be the first on the game since late 2007, when it was announced alongside the trailer. A few media reports on the game followed the announcement, but since then Eidos Montreal has largely been silent.

Deus Ex 3 Uses Tomb Raider Engine; Next Tomb Raider Game Rumored

Eidos Montreal's recently announced Deus Ex 3 will use a modified version of the engine created by Eidos-owned sister studio Crystal Dynamics for Tomb Raider: Legend (PC, PS2, X360).

"We chose the Crystal engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company," Eidos Montreal manager Stephane D'Astous told Develop. "Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders--there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties."

Speaking of Tomb Raider, Eidos has filed a trademark listing for Tomb Raider Underworld, expected to be the next entry in the series. Trademork claims that rumors surrounding the title indicate it may take place during Wayeb, the five days of the Mayan calendar during which the dead can interact with the living.

Following the announcement of Deus Ex 3, Eidos has released the first trailer (download or view below) for the Eidos Montreal-developed sequel. While the movie is filled with generic voiceover, the real substance comes in a series of quickly-flashed still images. With the power of Computer Technology and The Internet, Shacknews has isolated them and created a gallery of twenty screen captures for your perusal.

The game seems to focus heavily on the sociopolitical impact of biomodification as seen in the Deus Ex series. There's religious iconography, political divisiveness, potential terrorism, and segregation. And a representation of the Fibonacci sequence.

    Deus Ex 3 Announced

    Nov 26, 2007 11:37am CST tags: Deus Ex 3
Eidos has announced the long-awaited third entry in the Deus Ex franchise, the sci-fi RPG shooter series originally handled by Ion Storm. The game is being developed at Eidos' recently formed Montreal studio for unspecified consoles, though PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 editions are likely.

The game is currently at an extremely early stage. General studio manager Stephane D'Astous told Gamasutra that the team just received approval for the title's proof of concept. The team will be allotted up to two years for development, suggesting the game is targeted for a holiday 2009 release.

"[Deus Ex] was very highly rated at its release in 2000, and we have this great huge mandate to do the third one, and everybody is very excited," noted D'Astous. The existence of the title was suggested in an Eidos interview earlier this year.

Deus Ex creator Warren Spector, who was also a producer on Looking Glass' original System Shock, is not likely to be involved with the project. Spector's company, Junction Point Studios, was recently acquired by Disney, with the creator noting that his next game was, "the only project that could've tempted me to leave the world of independent development."
