Twisted Metal PS3 Confirmed

Feb 07, 2008 2:41pm CST tags: David Jaffe, Twisted Metal PS3, Sony
Sony Computer Entertainment's Twisted Metal franchise is headed to PlayStation 3, long-time series director David Jaffe has confirmed.

Jaffe will be overseeing development of the car combat title at his recently founded studio Eat, Sleep, Play. The first project out of Eat, Sleep, Play--Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition (PS2)--was a significantly beefed-up port of Incognito's Twisted Metal: Head On (PSP) that released this week.

An encoded hint as to the studio's next project was contained within that game, with the internet sleuths at GameFAQs and NeoGAF quickly cracking the code to reveal "Twisted Metal is coming on PSThree." Kotaku then verified the news with Jaffe himself.

No further details, such as a release date or distribution method, are available. Prior to the creation of Eat, Sleep, Play, Jaffe had worked on Incognito's Calling All Cars!, a downloadable PlayStation 3 title.

Sony is known to be pushing simultaneous retail and downloadable debuts of certain PlayStation 3 games, as evidenced by Incognito's Warhawk last fall and the upcoming releases of Slant Six Games' SOCOM Confrontation, and Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

David Jaffe Wants a Single Console Future

Jan 11, 2008 11:16am CST tags: Denis Dyack, David Jaffe, John Romero, Hardware (PC and console)
David JaffeOutspoken God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe (pictured left) is the latest industry figure to show support of a single console model for the gaming industry.

"We have [an industry standard] with DVD, we had it with VHS," argues Jaffe. "Sure, you miss out on a cool feature here, a neat feature there. But we’ve gotten used to this in so many other hardware products and—in doing so—reaped the many more benefits of a single system."

In a direct response to a counterpoint issued by Game|Life, Jaffe concedes his belief that "80% of the game innovation I care about comes via design, not tech."

Jaffe's suggestion that the industry move towards a single console hardware scheme settles him among other proponents of the model, including Denis Dyack and John Romero. Advocates of the model argue that a movement towards a single console would ease development and resolve fragmentation of the current console market.

Sony Computer Entertainment has released another batch of screens and details on Eat Sleep Play's Twisted Metal: Head On: Extra Twisted Edition (PS2). Founded by God of War creator David Jaffe, Eat Sleep Play's staff includes several Twisted Metal series veterans.

Due out this spring, the game features all of the content from Incognito's Twisted Metal: Head On (PSP), complete with a new level. The other portion of the game, which is labeled "Lost," includes characters from Twisted Metal: Black (PS2), four "lost" levels designed for the canceled Twisted Metal: Black sequel, and two new vehicles.

Along with the expected car combat carnage, the game will sport an on-foot level that has players controlling Sweet Tooth and learning about the franchise, a video documentary on the series, and several never-before-seen end movies from SingleTrac's original Twisted Metal.

The first images and trailer of Eat Sleep Play's debut project, Twisted Metal: Head On: Extra Twisted Edition (PS2), have arrived via the official PlayStation blog.

Described by Eat Sleep Play co-founder David Jaffe as a "love letter to Twisted Metal fans old and new," TM:HO:ETE is a drastically upgraded and enhanced port of Incognito's Twisted Metal: Head On (PSP), featuring new levels and graphics.

"I thought I was burnt out on the whole franchise but the second I sat down to design, it was like coming home," said God of War (PS2) and Calling All Cars (PS3) creator Jaffe. "It's been so much fun!"

God of War II Director Will Leave SCEA, Sony Confirms Sequel

Nov 06, 2007 6:48pm CST tags: Ready at Dawn, David Jaffe, Games: Console, Sony, God of War, SCEA
God of War II (PS2) director Cory Barlog will leave his position at SCEA Santa Monica soon, a Sony rep told 1up today. In mentioning Barlog's resignation, the Sony rep also confirmed the company's plans for a God of War III on PlayStation 3, presumably without Barlog's assistance.

"We can confirm that Cory Barlog, Game Director for God of War II, is leaving the SCEA SM Studio and we are grateful for his work and creative vision for the critically acclaimed God of War franchise," the spokesperson told 1up. "Moving forward, we are confident in the God of War team, as they are an extremely talented group of people that are passionate about the franchise and dedicated to creating even more epic content with God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PSP and God of War III for PS3."

It's unknown if Barlog and Sony will continue to collaborate, as former SCEA Santa Monica developer and God of War (PS2) creator David Jaffe will with Jaffe's new Sony endorsed studio Eat, Sleep, Play. In an interview with Shacknews earlier this year, Barlog indicated he was happy at SCEA Santa Monica, saying the God of War team was "one of the best teams I've ever worked with" and that he'd like to "continue to make many, many games" with his fellow developers there.

The upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus for PSP is in development by Daxter (PSP) developer Ready at Dawn Studios and will retail in spring 2008.

SCEA to Eat, Sleep, Play With Jaffe's New Studio; Working on Twisted Metal, More

Jul 27, 2007 7:54am CST tags: David Jaffe, Insomniac, PlayStation Network, Industry News: Console, Sony, SCEA
David JaffeConfirming earlier rumors, Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that acclaimed God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe has founded a new Utah-based game development studio with Incognito Entertainment founder and now-former president Scott Campbell.

The new studio, which goes by the moniker Eat, Sleep, Play, has signed a multi-year deal with Sony to create games exclusively for PlayStation platforms. The first announced game is Twisted Metal: Head On for PlayStation 2--presumably at its core a port of the 2005 PSP title--which will contain new material in the form of previously-unreleased Twisted Metal Black levels and a series documentary about which Jaffe recently blogged.

Further unspecified games from Eat, Sleep, Play will follow in 2008. According to the wording of today's press release, the company seems to be an independent studio despite its PlayStation exclusivity... Read more

Jaffe Leaves SCEA to Form New Studio? (Updated)

Jun 22, 2007 5:06pm CST tags: David Jaffe, Games: Console, Sony, SCEA
David JaffeUpdate: According to a post made by David Jaffe on the NeoGAF forums, the designer has no plans to leave SCEA or start a studio in Utah. "I can promise you guys I am still part of SCEA...I just got a paycheck from them!" wrote Jaffe. "I am still 100% a Sony employee and unless I got fired today and they didn't tell me, I'm still working for them. Also, I love working with the guys at Incog and hope to work with them for a long, long time but I sure as shit ain't moving to Utah."

1UP followed up on the story, claiming that Jaffe is indeed working with Campbell on the new Utah-based studio, but that Jaffe will remain in San Diego and will work remotely.

Original story: David Jaffe, director of many titles in the acclaimed Twisted Metal series and the creator of God of War (PS2), has left his long-time post at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, according to a story by 1UP. Jaffe is apparently departing the company to form a new studio with Incognito Entertainment president Scott Campbell.

Campbell is presently overseeing production on SCEA's... Read more

Late Night Consoling

Lots of stuff today. So much, in fact, that I think this may very well be the biggest LNC ever.
  • Guitar Hero totally Rocks the 80s

    [ps2]

As suggested by retailer listings last week, Activision subsidiary RedOctane confirmed that its popular Guitar Hero franchise will see an edition centered around music from the 1980s. Developed by series creator Harmonix, Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s will be released on PlayStation 2 later this summer.

The announcement also provided the first glimpse of the game's 30 songs, including a mix of tracks performed by the original artists and "as made famous by" covers:

    - I Wanna Rock (by Twisted Sister)
    - I Ran (by Flock of Seagulls)
    - Round and Round (as made famous by Ratt)
    - I Want Candy (as made famous by Bow Wow Wow)
    - Metal Health (as made famous by Quiet Riot)
    - Holy Diver (as made famous by Dio)
    - Heat Of The Moment (as made famous by Asia)

When asked about the chances of tracks from Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s appearing on the Xbox 360--possibly as downloadable content for Guitar Hero II--RedOctane representative Bryan Lam issued a statement that neither confirmed nor denied that possibility. "We recently launched the Xbox 360 game, and will continue to offer downloadable content for Xbox 360 users," Lam told Shacknews. "Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s provides a unique opportunity for our PlayStation2 fans who don't have the same online capabilities to enjoy fresh new content. We're strongly committed to offering the greatest game play experiences possible on all platforms."

  • Ghost Squad blasts light gun goodness onto Wii

    [wii]

Sega AM2's Ghost Squad, the company's top-earning arcade gun game in 2005, is on its way to the Wii this holiday season. An enhanced port of the arcade version, the Wii edition allows gamers to gun down terrorists and defuse bombs via the Wii Remote with up to three other players. Up to 25 different weapons--including machine guns, pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, and crossbows--are available throughout the course of the game.

"Ghost Squad brings the classic light gun blaster experience that SEGA made popular in the arcades to the Wii," said Sega of America marketing VP Scott Steinberg. "With a more robust multiplayer experience than even the arcade version and numerous unlockable items and stages adding replay value, Ghost Squad will be the ultimate shooter experience for the Nintendo Wii console."

  • Universe at War: Earth Assault overtakes Xbox 360

    [xbox360]

Formerly announced for the PC, Petroglyph's RTS Universe at War: Earth Assault will be hitting the Xbox 360 as well. Unlike many other RTS games, Universe at War's persistent world tracks environmental damage across multiple battles and environments, enabling players to return to a previous location and find it still in shambles. Players can customize their weapons and defenses in the midst of battle to be more effective, as well as partake in a number of multiplayer modes.

Responding to queries as to how Petroglyph came to the decision to bring Universe at War to Xbox 360, creative director Adam Isgreen told Shacknews that consoles are an appropriate fit for Petroglyph's design philosophy. "We always like to approach games with a console attitude in the first place," he explained, "keeping things approachable and intuitive."

Published by Sega, Universe at War: Earth Assault is scheduled for a PC release in holiday 2007 with the Xbox 360 version following in Q1 2008.

  • More Saints Row on the way

    [ps3] [xbox360]

A new entry in THQ's open ended crime-centric Saints Row series is in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the company announced today. As with the original, the followup will be handled by developer Volition and should arrive at some point in 2008.

"The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre's first-ever online multiplayer," announced THQ executive VP of worldwide publishing Kelly Flock. "The game's worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again."

Though an additional Saints Row release was first mentioned during a conference call in February, it was not known at the time if the executive was referring to a new title or the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of the Xbox 360 original.

  • Take one part Dynasty Warriors, mix with Gundam...

    [ps3] [xbox360]

Namco Bandai and Koei today unveiled plans to bring PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Dynasty Warriors:Gundam to North America in late summer. Previously released on the PlayStation 3 in Japan as Gundam Musou, the game combines developer Omega Force's penchant for large-scale battles and mass destruction, as seen in its Dynasty Warriors games, with the ever-popular robots and mythology of Sunrise's mech-tastic franchise. Spanning multiple Gundam time lines, Dynasty Warriors:Gundam includes a number of different mobile suits and pilots to control across its official, original and versus game modes.

  • Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron wages onward to PSP

    [psp]

LucasArts sent along the first details on developer Rebellion's Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. Exclusively for the PSP, Renegade Squadron will represent the only original entry in the Star Wars Battlefront series this year when it releases in the fall.

Building off Savage Entertainment's PSP version of Star Wars Battlefront II, Renegade Squadron replaces the traditional class system with the option to customize a character's weapons, equipment and special abilities. The game also supports online matches of up to 16 players, with maps ranging from Korriban's Valley of the Sith to the remains of Alderaan.

  • Alone in the Dark writer announced

    [ps3] [xbox360]

Author Lorenzo Carcaterra is working with developer Eden Games to help pen the studio's upcoming revival of the classic survival horror series Alone in the Dark, which is in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Carcaterra--who has written books such as Chasers, Apaches, and Sleepers--is said to bring his expertise of the New York City area and experience of over 20 years in writing fact and fiction to the project, which centers around a conspiracy involving New York City's Central Park.

"Alone in the Dark was a challenge which allowed me to bring a realistic feel to an apocalyptic situation facing New York City and really dig into the Central Park conspiracy idea," explained the author. "It also allowed me to write for hard-edged characters, some good, some bad, all forced to confront a force whose power they could never imagine. The story never stalls, always moves in overdrive and the characters zoom right along at warp speed, stopping long enough along the way to say a few lines that keep driving the plot forward. The end result is, I hope, a roller-coaster of a thrill ride that should be tons of fun to play."

Neither developer Eden Studios nor publisher Atari has suggested a target release date for Alone in the Dark.

  • Atlus brings Growlanser's Heritage of War to North America

    [ps2]

The latest entry in the Growlanser RPG series, Growlanser: Heritage of War, will make its way to North America in late summer care of publisher Atlus. Following the appearance of an impassable veil on its borders, a small island becomes plagued by war, famine, and monsters. As players struggle to save themselves and their country across the game's five chapters, they will find themselves tackling a number of strategic party-based battles and interacting with a magical fairy companion. As with most recent Atlus releases, the game will come packaged in a special edition box loaded with bonus materials, which will be unveiled at a later date.

  • A False Alarm for Happy Tree Friends

    [xbox360]

Mondo Media's disturbingly cute and exceedingly violent Happy Tree Friends animated series has entered the interactive realm thanks to Sega and developer Stainless Studios. An action-puzzle game, Happy Tree Friends False Alarm puts players in control of one of three characters--Flippy, Lumpy, and Handy--as they use items such as concrete, ice, gasoline, and nitroglycerin to modify the surrounding environment in hopes of preventing an untimely demise.

Happy Tree Friends False Alarm will hit PC and Xbox Live Arcade this fall.

    [xbox360]

Microsoft and developer Realtime Worlds today released a title update and detailed two new pieces of Crackdown downloadable content slated to arrive within the next week. The in-game garage has also been redesigned to accommodate more vehicles.

  • Nintendo acquires Monolith Soft (the other Monolith)

    [ps2] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [gba]

Namco Bandai Games' Japanese division announced this week that Nintendo has acquired controlling interest the formerly Namco Bandai-owned development studio Monolith Soft. With 80% Nintendo ownership, Monolith Soft will essentially become a first party Nintendo development studio; Namco Bandai will retain a 16% stake in the company.

Nintendo's acquisition of Monolith Soft is likely in large part intended to address the overall low number of roleplaying games on Nintendo home systems. Monolith Soft is responsible for the PlayStation 2 series Xenosaga, a followup to Square's PlayStation RPG Xenogears, as well as the Baten Kaitos RPG series on GameCube. At one point, Namco announced a Nintendo DS version of Baten Kaitos, but it is currently thought to have been cancelled. Monolith Soft is the developer of the upcoming Wii exclusive armageddon-tinged action game Disaster: Day of Crisis.

Movie news site LatinoReview.com further cemented its odd reputation as the most prolific video game movie script-leaking organization around with its preview of Stuart Beattie's treatment for the upcoming Gears of War film. Reader "Gearhead" contributed the report detailing approximately the first third of the treatment, which apparently begins prior to the events of Epic's Gears of War (X360) game. No director has yet been attached to the Gears of War movie project.

In addition to acting as a screenwriter on Michael Mann's Collateral and the upcoming The Punisher 2, Beattie is also a writer on two in-development video game films: Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run and Splinter Cell: The Movie.

  • Nintendo developing 45 for Wii, 79 for DS; Kojima likes Smash

    [wii] [ds]

Satoru IwataSpeaking at a Japanese press conference, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that his company is currently developing 45 games for Wii as well as 79 games for Nintendo DS, reports financial publication Bloomberg. Those figures almost certainly refer both to internally developed games as well as Nintendo-published titles developed by second- or third-party studios.

Both systems have been light on Nintendo-developed games in recent months, with highly anticipated titles on both systems--such as The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on DS and Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Retro's Metroid Prime 3: Corruption--having been delayed past their original projected release periods. According to Iwata, the company's next round of first-party releases will ship towards the end of this summer.

Allaying fears that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy have been pushed out of 2007, Iwata confirmed that both games are set for release this summer or fall. He also claimed that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption's pointer-based control is being "rated close to the keyboard and mouse control that's the standard for PC games" by its testers.

On the topic of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the game is apparently reaching a fairly complete stage of production. During the recent Snake vs. Zombie event hosted by Killer7 developer Grasshopper Manufacture, Smash Bros. series designer Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance to discuss with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima the appearance of Solid Snake as a playable character in Brawl. According to Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton on a recent episode of the Kojima Productions Report, Kojima played the game and stated that it "already feels very complete, it's already a lot of fun." Kojima apparently claimed that Nintendo "could put it out now, and it would sell millions of copies."

Cory Barlog on God of War II

Mar 13, 2007 12:30pm CST tags: David Jaffe, Games: PC, Sony, God of War
SCE Studios Santa Monica's highly anticipated PS2 action sequel God of War II: The End Begins goes on sale today, and to celebrate the occasion Sony held a launch party last night at the Metreon center in San Francisco. Present at the event was game director Cory Barlog, who took the reins from David Jaffe following the first game. I sat down with Barlog for a chat that ended up spanning a surprising range of topics. Barlog gave his thoughts on his team, his job, David Jaffe, Secret Agent Barbie, Kim Possible, Barbie Horse Adventures, and how God of War protagonist Kratos became a little more focused in combat.
The previous--and first--man to hold Barlog's position on the God of War series, David Jaffe, remains firmly associated with the games in the public gaming eye, with many unaware that Jaffe has passed on his director position for the franchise. Barlog gave his thoughts on the man, who seems, at least as much as is possible in the video game industry, to have become larger than life.

"That guy is a character, man. He's his own...thing. His own man, with the crazy talking thing he does," Barlog laughed. "And that's awesome; it's his personality. He and I are totally different. I talk sometimes as well. Maybe not as frequently as he does."

What about dealing with the rather sizeable legacy left with God of War?

"I don't think I've stepped out of Jaffe's shadow yet," Barlog reflected. "People still say, 'God of War II, man! It looks awesome, Jaffe. Jaffe, You did a great job.' They're like, 'Jaffe, have my children!' I'm still in that shadow, and I don't think I'll be out of it for a while."

Plus, in case you missed it, during the event Barlog also revealed that rumble is to come to PS3.

  • Xbox 360 Achievements to grant rewards?

    [xbox360]

Prior to the release of Xbox 360, many gamers had Gamerscore points--awarded for specific Achievements during gameplay--and Microsoft Points--purchased with real money and exchanged for Xbox Live Marketplace goods--confused and in some cases mentally melded, believing that devoting more time to games could potentially earn them free content. This clearly was not the case, but according to alleged "partially torn documents" apparently acquired by Xbox 360-oriented site Unscripted 360, Microsoft may be planning something similar.

Unscripted 360 claims that, next month, Microsoft will unveil a system that will award a "limited number of prizes" to overachieving Achievement achievers. The program, states the site, will be free, and will apparently have room for the casual as well as the hardcore.

Microsoft has obviously not announced any such program, but in its official responses to inquiries on the matter it is acting slightly less like a brick wall than publishers generally tend to do when confronting rumors, suggesting that there is a possibility this may be on the money.

  • God of War II ascending to completion

    [ps2]

While its last-generation compatriots have long since faded away, PlayStation 2 has kept on chugging with some remaining noteworthy exclusives. Little has been released recently about what is arguably the biggest of these, SCE Worldwide Studios Santa Monica's God of War II, though it has remained a strong presence in gamers' minds. This weekend, designer Cory Barlog, who took the reins from God of War creator David Jaffe for this installment, indicated on his personal blog that the upcoming vengeance-fuelled action sequel is nearing completion. "My work here...is done," reads the post headline, after which he describes that as of this past Sunday, January 28, his team has completed their part in the project and it's off to Quality Assurance for final testing and certification.

Previously, God of War II held a general Q1 2007 release period projection, but according to Barlog, the game "is on target to get finished and pressed in the beginning of February," meaning it may well be only a couple of weeks away. GameTrailers is hosting a new trailer of the game.

  • Telltale Games gearing up for Wii

    [wii]

Much ado has been made in recent days over a job posting on the official Telltale Games website, requesting an experienced Wii Systems Programmer who will be hired for the purpose of "implementing our core 3D graphics and audio systems on the Wii." The first conclusion on the mat of the interwebs is, of course, that the company must be in the process of porting its well received episodic series of Sam & Max adventure games over to Nintendo's current home console.

It may not actually be quite so clear that that is what the company currently has on its plate, however. Telltale has attempted to diffuse the rumors, though--as is typical for companies commenting on rumors--it has stopped short of explaining the full situation. An observent gamer might examine the various major publishers' Wii strategies since the machine's launch, then examine Telltale's catalogue of games, which includes the TV series-based CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder published by--wait for it--Ubisoft. Draw your own conclusions.

  • N leaps to Xbox Live Arcade

    [xbox360]

Those who occasionally play free independently developed games may very well have at one point stumbled upon N, the addictive ninja-starring Lode Runner-esque physics-based platformer from developer Metanet Software. Some of those people may have at one point fantasized about playing the game with a console controller rather than a keyboard. Those particular people will be pleased to read the latest news post on Metanet's official site, where the company announced that it is beginning development on N+, an Xbox Live Arcade version of its award winning game. Assisting with development will be Vancouver-based Klei Entertainment.

N+ will be similar to its predecessor in terms of content and gameplay, and will include a level editor which players can use to send custom content to others. Multiplayer modes are also under consideration.

Metanet hopes to have N+ completed by the end of this summer and available on the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace this fall. Pricing estimates were not given.

Capcom vs. AIAS, Round Two

Jan 29, 2007 10:24am CST tags: David Jaffe, Capcom, Tecmo, Industry News: PC & Console, AIAS
Last year, many gamers and industry members were surprised when the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences released its yearly list of gaming award nominations for 2005 and Capcom's highly praised Resident Evil 4 (PS2, GCN) was nowhere to be found. "Thank God for Capcom [not entering]. We're probably going to pick up some awards tonight," joked David Jaffe, designer of SCE Santa Monica's God of War, which indeed went on to win seven awards on twelve nominations. It turned out that Capcom had declined to join the AIAS--and pay its corporate membership dues--and meaning its games were not eligible for the ballot. AIAS voters wrote-in the game in high numbers but Capcom was informed the votes could not be counted without its membership.

Cash-strapped publisher Majesco was unable to join, leaving Double Fine's acclaimed Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC) out of the running. For the larger Capcom, however, it appears to be a matter of principle as much as anything else. This year two well received Capcom games were missing from the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, its own Dead Rising (X360) and Clover Studio's Okami (PS2), the latter in particular a frequent recipient of awards from various publications.

This year, Capcom has posted a frank, full-length reply to the AIAS' methods via its forums, originally sent to GameSpot. Calling the awards "of dubious merit, at best," Capcom asked whether its company, "really [needs] to pay tens of thousands of dollars in order to present awards to our own games?"

"Again, from the AIAS webpage, their awards are supposedly about 'Recognizing the best games of 2006.' Evidently, they meant, the best games that paid to be recognized. As a company, we find ourselves questioning the value or credibility of awards that seem to honor developers for their creative work, when the truth is that their marketing departments have to pay to obtain consideration," reads the statement, which went on to add that were indeed many "fantastic" nominated games from member companies on the list of nominees.

In closing, the statement reads, "Capcom Entertainment would like to thank the gamers who have made Dead Rising and Okami so successful, the media who were similarly moved by the creativity and innovation found within the games and the teams at Capcom and Clover Studios who poured their outstanding passion, talent and creative energies into both ground-breaking games (coincidently, all things supposedly recognized by the Interactive Achievement Awards)."

In it story on the matter, GameSpot learned from AIAS representatives that in addition to Capcom and Majesco, publishers Eidos and Tecmo are not paying members; no games from the four publishers have been nominated for awards in the past three years. Apparently, the membership requirement is long standing AIAS policy but has only been enforced for the last few award shows. An AIAS representative noted that it contacted Capcom in advance soliciting membership, but the publisher declined.

The 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards will be presented on February 8, 2007, during the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas.

Late Night Consoling

It's a big one tonight!
  • PlayStation Network launched in North America

    [ps3]

Earlier today in our Unpacking the PS3 feature, we reported that while Sony's PlayStation Network and PlayStation Store had already been active in Japan, they had not yet gone live in North America. Now, just hours later, we can report that both services are up and running in other parts of the world. If you reside in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, and you are one of the few to currently own a PS3, you may now register a PlayStation Network account. This will allow you to play online games as well as make downloads and purchases from the PlayStation Store. Subscription to the service is free.

Currently, the PlayStation Store is stocked with the following items:

    Demos (free):
    - Blast Factor
    - Formula One Championship Edition
    - NBA 07
    - Resistance: Fall of Man
    - MotorStorm
    - Cash Guns Chaos
Downloadable games (prices current for United States):
    - Blast Factor ($7.99)
    - Cash Guns Chaos ($9.99)

There are also numerous trailers for games such as David Jaffe's upcoming title Calling All Cars (PS3), Incognito's Warhawk (PS3), Factor 5's Lair (PS3), and others, as well as several trailers for films available on Blu-ray Disc.

Unlike Microsoft's Microsoft Points system for Xbox Live Marketplace and Nintendo's upcoming Wii Points system for its Virtual Console, Sony's online store simply represents purchases in terms of local currency. Money used to buy games can be added to a virtual wallet at any time, including right at the time of purchase.

There are currently no sections of the store dedicated to microtransactions or any type of downloadable in-game content, but those are sure to come in the near future.

  • Halo 3 multiplayer beta in '07, new Halo 2 maps coming

    [xbox] [xbox360]

Undoubtedly living up to any expectations fans may have had after being promised new Halo 3 news this week, developer Bungie Studios and parent company Microsoft announced today that an open beta of the upcoming Xbox 360 shooter will be released in spring 2007.

For the many gamers still playing Halo 2 via Xbox Live, there will also be new multiplayer maps available for download in spring 2007. These maps will be available only to those playing Halo 2 with the backwards compatibility feature of the Xbox 360.

Fans of both football and Halo can look forward to December 4, as during ESPN's Monday Night Football on that date a CG Halo 3 ad featuring "a unique and compelling look at Master Chief" will be broadcast. Today's announcement notes that the ad will run "one time only" (read: will be on YouTube within minutes) but will also be downloadable through the Xbox Live Marketplace. On its own official site, Bungie has posted an explanation regarding the decision to go with a CG ad rather than one featuring gameplay footage. "We all agreed that a cooler thing to do would be to move as far away from gameplay-style footage as possible, and make something more movie-like," reads the post. "Let our fans see what the Halo universe looks like in a photo-realistic fashion."

Microsoft also released a single screenshot from Halo 3 (prior Halo 3 screenshots can be found here) containing an in-game image of Master Chief.

  • PlayStation 3 lacks upscaler for 1080i

    [ps3]

With numerous display standards falling under the high definition umbrella--mainly 720p, 1080i, and 1080p--many gamers have expressed confusion as to which is the most appropriate for their games. Now, it seems that with certain HD PS3 games on certain HD television sets, there might not be the option for HD at all. Earlier today, posters at the NeoGAF forums, among other internet gaming hangouts, realized that PlayStation 3 does not seem to have an internal mechanism for upscaling 720p to 1080i. Meanwhile, many 1080i-capable HDTVs also lack such an upscaler. This means that a 720p-only PS3 game simply will not sync with a non-upscaling 1080i HDTV, forcing users to play the game in 480p enhanced definition or 480i standard definition.

For reference, all PS3 games support 720p, while support for 1080i and 1080p is optional. In the NeoGAF thread, a developer from Insomniac Games, which produced the 720p-only Resistance: Fall of Man, stated that the problem is "not a software issue," implying that it is the hardware that lacks an upscaler. By contrast, Microsoft's Xbox 360 will upscale 720p games to 1080i for TVs that require it.

For users with a standard or enhanced definition television, PS3 games should pose no problem, even if they will not be displayed in full resolution. Though apparently lacking an upscaler, the machine does have a functional downscaler.

Shacknews cannot confirm these reports firsthand, lacking a 1080i-only TV with which to test a 720p claim, but multiple firsthand accounts along with the suggestive developer comment point to this one being true. Hopefully the company issues a software update remedying the situation.

Sony Computer Entertainment America had not reponded to requests for comments at time of publishing.

  • Sid Meier's Pirates! comes to PSP (insert pirate joke here)

    [psp]

In 2004, Sid Meier's studio Firaxis released Sid Meier's Pirates! for PC, reimagining the classic PC title Sid Meier's Pirates! first designed by gaming legend Sid Meier in 1987. This was followed up by Sid Meier's Pirates! for Xbox, a port of the 2004 version of Sid Meier's Pirates! for PC. Now, Firaxis and publisher 2K Games have announced their intention to take Sid Meier's Pirates! to yet another platform with Sid Meier's Pirates! for PSP. "Sid Meier’s Pirates! is already a proven success," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann. "The universal appeal and compelling gameplay in [Sid Meier's] Pirates! makes it a perfect match for the PSP system." Sid Meier's Pirates! designer Sid Meier added, "[Sid Meier's] Pirates! for the PSP system allows players to shape the heroic life of a pirate while embracing the pirate’s way of life – always on the go!"

2K plans to release Firaxis' Sid Meier's Pirates! for PSP in January 2007.

  • Capcom delves into alternate reality for Lost Planet

    [xbox360]

Following Halo 2's incredibly well publicized "I Love Bees" promotion, so-called "alternate reality games" became all the rage in video game marketing. The craze has died down a bit since then, but new ARGs still pop up from time to time. Case in point: this seemingly innocuous corporate website for a company called NeoVenus Construction, which purports to deal in space travel and extraterrestrial colonization and terraforming. A poster on the NeoGAF found the site by following a URL flashed for just a couple of frames in a trailer for Capcom's upcoming Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (X360). A Whois search on the domain confirms that it is owned by Capcom.

The site undoubtedly goes deeper than its easily accessible product and services description pages and job postings, as some pages contain fields for a username and password. Internet detectives, go for it.

Capcom plans to release Lost Planet in January 2007.

  • The Wii component cable saga continues

    [nintendo]

It is anyone's guess as to why component cables have always been such an elusive item when it comes to Nintendo home consoles, but it looks like the Big N is finally starting to understand that gamers just plain prefer sending their moving pictures through cables that separate a video signal into one luminance channel and two chrominance channels. Also, they enable progressive scan, which is a plus.

Anyway, if you feel the completely understandable need to have component video all ready for when you pick up your system this Sunday, Nintendo is currently offering them for sale via its online store or by phone, with the option for one-day shipping. The store states that the cables are already backordered, but Shacker mikefr24, who placed an order earlier today, was told by a Nintendo representative that the website is out of sync with actual inventory and that Nintendo has enough stock "to cover ever Wii on launch day." Of course, if you plan on ordering them yourself, it wouldn't hurt to call and confirm.

God of War's Jaffe Shuns Story

Jul 17, 2006 4:00pm CST tags: CliffyB, Will Wright, David Jaffe, Games: PC, Sony, God of War
Outspoken Sony Computer Entertainment America designer David Jaffe, best known for the acclaimed God of War (PS2) and the Twisted Metal franchise, has stated on his blog that he will be steering away from storytelling in his video game projects, despite still enjoying playing games with a strong emphasis on the single-player narrative experience. "I think even the best ones feel forced," he said, referring to games such as Metal Gear Solid or God of War that rely heavily on narrative devices borrowed from film or literature--"like they are not speaking the true language of video games."
To me, most (all?) story based games are like taking a trumpet and playing it a little, but also using the brass exterior of the trumpet to carve a story onto a wall. Sure you can do it, and you may even have a nice story scratched onto the wall when you are done. But it’s not really what the trumpet is for and there are a hell of a lot easier ways to write a story. Plus, you’ve got this nice, shiny trumpet- which is now all scratched up- just sitting there, begging to be played, begging to be used as it was intended.
...
For the stuff I am directly working on, I am trying to take steps towards more pure game experiences and see what I can do with those. I have to say, I’m having a blast so far.

"I don’t want to tell stories with my games anymore," said Jaffe frankly, admitting that while he is spending plenty of time playing other people's story games, he is also spending more of his time than ever on "casual" games as well as genres such as racing and sports, which put less reliance on any kind of built-in narrative. While Jaffe recently stated that God of War will likely become a trilogy, he is no longer the creative lead on the franchise; rather, it is in the hands of designer Cory Barlog from Jaffe's former studio SCE Santa Monica.

Presumably, Jaffe's next game, publically nothing more than the codename "HL," will be quite distinct from the very presentation-focused cinematic nature of God of War. "Now I just want to do it in a way that celebrates what makes video games great, versus taking elements from other media and trying to squish those elements into a product that- if you do everything right- MIGHT just have one tenth the emotional impact as what you can get from more traditional media (like film, tv, or books).

Jaffe's comments encapsulate a long running debate regarding the nature of games, and the appropriateness of narrative and other generally non-interactive elements as opposed to a stronger focus on gameplay. Perhaps not coincidentally, Jaffe along with gameplay-uber-alles designer Will Wright, well known Epic designer CliffyB, and former ION Storm designer Harvey Smith, recently participated in a developer roundtable which touched on, among other things, that very issue.
