A new DOOM 3 movie is now avaiable, first shown on G4. The video shows gameplay and interview footage. And for those of you wondering about SDK release plans, I asked id Software about it and you can expect game source & related tools not too long after the game hits the shelves. Also keep in mind the editor is in the game .exe so you can start mapping immediately.

On DOOM 3 Demo, Linux & Mac Versions

Jul 15, 2004 9:13am CST tags: DOOM 3, Demo
id's Todd Hollenshead updated his .plan again, thanking everyone for their congratulatory notes and giving us an update on a DOOM 3 demo and the release of Mac & Linux versions of the game.
Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains "when it's done", but I can confirm that it's definitely coming.

Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves.

DOOM3 GONE GOLD!

It's the moment you've all been waiting for, DOOM 3 HAS GONE GOLD! According to Todd H's .plan update, the official U.S. release date is August 5, Europe will get it several days after that.
Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made. ...
In case you need some media to keep yourself entertained until August here are screenshots and videos.

UPDATE: Here is the official press release and the UA-CORP website has been updated with a timer counting down to the estimated retail release. CNN Money reports there will be no DVD version.

DOOM 3 Done?

Jul 10, 2004 9:44am CST tags: Activision, id Software, DOOM 3
The hot new rumor on the Internet is that DOOM 3 is finished, because of this marketing flyer by Activision which mentions "we said it will be out when it's done..it's done!". GameSpot contacted the publisher where a spokesperson said "id Software has made no announcement that Doom 3 has gone gold". As previously mentioned here, online retailers have the game pegged for an August 3 release and it was recently announced that there will be a DOOM 3 tournament at QuakeCon (August 12 - 15).

DOOM 3 August 3?

Jun 22, 2004 4:10pm CST tags: id Software, DOOM 3
As always, release dates mean nothing until id Software announces one..but EBGames and Gamestop are now both listing August 3 as a release date for DOOM 3. Gamestop even boasts "Official launch date of August 3rd, 2004 confirmed!". In any case it looks like it's getting closer. Thanks Shane.

In a Slashdot post mostly about his endeavors at Armadillo Aerospace, id Software's John Carmack notes that "Doom beta testing is going very well". That doesn't really tell us much about a release, except that it is getting closer. Thanks jason e.

DOOM Movie Studio Change

Jun 04, 2004 9:52am CST tags: DOOM 3
Comingsoon.net is reporting that the DOOM movie has found a new studio, after Warner Brothers let its option to make the movie expire. The film is now set up at Universal Pictures, with producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and John Wells still attached to the project. Enda McCallion will direct the movie (it wil be his first), now based on the DOOM 3 storyline. The story also mentions a July 15 release date for the game. Update: HomeLAN Fed reports that Universal does not have the DOOM movie rights, quoting id CEO Todd Hollenshead as saying "The movie rights have reverted to id, as Warner's option period expired. However, we remain a 'free agent' at this time and multiple studios are interested in the project...".

DOOM 3 Q&A

May 25, 2004 9:44am CST tags: DOOM 3
Also on HomeLAN Fed today is a new DOOM 3 Q&A with id CEO Todd Hollenshead. JCal asks if the team is happy with how the game is turning out, the lengthy development time, demo plans, the four player multiplayer mode, squaring off against Half-Life 2 and even the DOOM movie is mentioned.
HomeLAN - What hints can you give us about some of the surprises in store for players when they get their hands on Doom 3?
Todd Hollenshead - Now it won't be a surprise if everyone knows it's coming! Without giving everything away, I'm sure that people are underestimating how truly frightening the game really is and how well the story is integrated into the game. We still haven't shown several of the really nasty demons in the game, and people are going to go nuts over them. There are some cool secrets and many nods to the original DOOM that are integrated into the game in such a fashion that they are fun but don't take away from the atmosphere. And look out for the plot twist!

DOOM 3 Summer Release

May 11, 2004 12:00pm CST tags: Activision, id Software, DOOM 3
Activision and id Software have made it official, DOOM3 is set to be released this summer (and another bit here) for some head to head fun with Half-Life 2. No specific details were given. Only the XBox version of DOOM 3 is showing on the floor at E3 this year, you can visit the DOOM 3 website if you're just dying.

DOOM 3 Q&A

May 10, 2004 6:43pm CST tags: id Software, DOOM 3
A new DOOM 3 Q&A has been posted on PC.IGN. id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead is asked about the game's concept, environments, weapons, A.I., interactivity and the lack of co-op on the PC.
With respect to the environments, they're really hyper-realistic in nature in terms of the indoor environments within the UAC facility. Because you're on Mars, there's no atmosphere, so there's not a lot of opportunity for you to go outside, but you do get to see what the landscape of Mars looks like outdoors. There are some limited missions where you spend some limited time outside, but because of a limited air supply, you're not roaming the surface of the planet, because it's barren and there's not a lot to do there and the demons are taking over the base anyway, so you sort of would be wandering aimlessly.

Work @ id Software

May 01, 2004 12:48pm CST tags: id Software, DOOM 3
id Software programmer Robert Duffy updated his .plan file, mentioning that the DOOM 3 developer is looking to hire a tools programmer. At least five years of C and C++ experience along with extensive OpenGL knowledge is required.

John Carmack Keynote Highlights

Mar 25, 2004 6:20pm CST tags: John Carmack, DOOM 3
HomeLAN Fed has a story posted about the John Carmack keynote address at GDC today, offering a few highlights from his talk. He covered various topics and of course DOOM 3 was one of them, mentioning that the game is pretty close to release.
- Carmack confirmed that id is already thinking about their next first person shooter project after Doom III is due. Unlike Doom III, which is in its fourth year of development, Carmack said their next game is only supposed to take a couple of years to make, mainly due to the fact that they don't plan to make a huge graphical leap as they did from Quake 3 Arena to Doom III.
- Carmack revealed that he and id thought about, and then dropped, a plan to revisit Quake II, remaking the same exact game but use an all new graphics engine as a way to show off the engine without having to concentrate on game development.

DOOM 3 Voice Work Article

Mar 19, 2004 9:28am CST tags: Activision, id Software, DOOM 3
On Location With: DOOM 3 is a GameSpy article describing their recent trip to the Salami Studios in North Hollywood where Activision & id Software had people do voice work for the game. The actors they hired are mostly veteran game voice actors having worked on games like Metal Gear Solid 2, Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty and many others.
The highlight of the session comes at the very end, when LaMarr is allowed to cut loose and perform a variety of grunts and screams (saved for last as it puts the biggest strain on each actor's voice). With direction from Willits, Stratton and casting director Margaret Tang, LaMarr goes through a variety of screams, including one marine's inspired plea of "don't you leave me, motherf***er!!!" (It's an M-rated game, after all.) After all the serious dialogue that's preceded it, the perfect delivery of the line actually causes everyone in the studio to burst out laughing.

DOOM 3 Q&A Part 2

Mar 04, 2004 3:26pm CST tags: id Software, DOOM 3
The second part of GamePro's DOOM 3 Q&A is now available. Like the first part, the questions are more about id Software and the gaming industry in general than about DOOM 3 specifically.

DOOM 3 Q&A

Mar 02, 2004 9:42pm CST tags: John Romero, DOOM 3
The fist part of GamePro's DOOM 3 Q&A is online, asking id's Marty Stratton, Todd Hollenshead, and Tim Willits about the game. Topics include keeping a low-profile, and the influence of John Romero, while there isn't really any info on the game itself. Thanks HomeLAN Fed.

DOOM 3 In April?

Feb 25, 2004 8:25pm CST tags: Activision, id Software, DOOM 3
GameSpot is reporting that DOOM 3 will be released April 15. At least, that's what Activision is telling them. The April 15 date is also listed on EBGames, but of course it doesn't mean much until id Software announces something. But hey, it sure would be cool. Update: looks like GameSpot's story is already gone, sweet!

The Computer Gaming World website has a DOOM 3 preview available, offering the online version of an article they printed in a recent issue of the magazine. The preview has pretty much the same info as articles posted online last September, but hey it's DOOM right. Thanks Blues News.

DOOM Q&As

Dec 12, 2003 10:43am CST tags: John Romero, DOOM 3
As part of their 10 years of DOOM coverage, GameSpy has posted a Q&A with id's Tim Willits & Kevin Cloud as well as one with John Romero. Kevin & John are asked about development of the original game, and Tim talks about DOOM 3.
GameSpy: Is DOOM 3 a game that you think hardcore DOOM fans will embrace?
Tim Willits: Hardcore fans of the original game will definitely embrace DOOM 3. The key to the original game was the emotions that gamers felt while playing -- the fear, excitement, and adrenaline. In DOOM 3 we've taken those emotions and pushed them to a much higher level. The DOOM 3 technology allows us to create architecture, environments, and characters that almost-literally come to life in a hyper-realistic experience that probably exceeds even what original DOOM players imagined the DOOM world to be. Players will see quite a few of the original characters ...
