Capcom Reveals Street Fighter 4, Dark Void, Lost Planet on PS3

Oct 17, 2007 12:00pm CST tags: Capcom, PlayStation Network, Games: PC & Console, Sony, Street Fighter
At the Capcom Gamer's Day in London, game developer and publisher Capcom revealed it's begun work on Street Fighter 4, the first new title in the central Street Fighter series of seminal fighting games since 1997's Street Fighter 3, according to a now-removed story at Games Radar. Work on the title has just started for unannounced platforms, and Capcom insinuated a 2009 release would be the earliest gamers would see the fighter in arcades or at retail.

The company additionally confirmed its newest IP, revealed in trademark filings earlier this week, called Dark Void. The title is a sci-fi action-adventure in the third-person, with steampunk trappings like jetpacks, airships, gyrocopters and the like. No platforms or estimated release dates were announced for the title.

Capcom also announced that last year's ultra-cold shooter Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (PC, X360) will be making its way to PlayStation 3 early next year. The game will thankfully include all the downloadable content and bonuses available for the PC and Xbox 360 versions when it retails, so gamers won't have to wait for Sony's PlayStation Network to get its expanded downloadable content stream in working order.

Capcom Unveils Redesigned Bionic Commando

Oct 15, 2007 7:44pm CST tags: Capcom, Ubisoft, Bionic Commando
A current-gen update to Capcom's 1988 grappling-hook sidescroller Bionic Commando will be coming to PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, Capcom has announced. No estimated release date has been given to the project.

Like the original title, players will use a grappling hook to traverse levels designed for vertical ascent. The new title will be in 3D, of course, and the grappling hook has been updated to feature more practical uses--like dispatching foes and heaving vehicles across the city.

Swedish developer GRIN, responsible for the PC versions of Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter series, will head up the development of the title. Hopefully, GRIN will as skillfully implement the grappling hook as Capcom did in its third-person shooter Lost Planet: Extreme Condition.

Monster Hunter 3, Super Mario Stadium Baseball Announced for Wii

Oct 10, 2007 5:10am CST tags: Namco, Capcom, Games: Console
Mario will apparently be taking America's favorite pasttime beyond what was seen in Wii Sports, as Nintendo has announced Super Mario Stadium Baseball for Wii. No details, including whether the game is being developed or by another studio, are available. The plumber's last baseball outing, Mario Superstar Baseball on GameCube, was developed by Namco.

Also en route to Wii is Monster Hunter 3, the latest edition of Capcom's huge-in-Japan adventure series revolving around capturing and training monsters. Significantly, the game was originally announced only for PlayStation 3.

The news was released during Nintendo's Conference 2007 Fall, as reported by Japanese publication Gemaga and translated by IGN.

Nintendo Displaces Longtime Incumbent EA as Game Developer Magazine's Top Publisher

Industry print publication Game Developer has released its 2007 list of Top 20 Publishers in video games, and the top slot has changed for the first time in the history of the annual feature, with third-party industry heavyweight Electronic Arts ceding the #1 crown to first-party manufacturer Nintendo. The title is the latest in a seemingly unending string of good news for the Kyoto-based hardware giant, which recently saw its stock hit a record high.

EA moved down to #2, with Activision coming in at #3, Ubisoft moving up to #4, and THQ rounding out the top five. Take-Two Interactive and Sega of America took the next two slots. As far as the other first-party publishers, Sony Computer Entertainment came in at #8, one slot above Microsoft Game Studios. Fans of niche Japanese gaming will be pleased to know that Atlus has joined the Top 20 for the first time at #18, while ailing Atari has dropped off.

Game Developer publisher CMP Game Group compiled its list by considering detailed responses from over 300 members of the game publishing community, as well as sales and review data, release portfolios, and employee pay.

A full list of the Top 20 Publishers follows. The full 100-page report is available for purchase from Game Developer Research, with a summary in the October 2007 issue of Game Developer. ... Read more

Seeds Begets Platinum Games

Sep 27, 2007 6:15pm CST tags: Capcom, Industry News: Console
Seeds, the independent studio formed from the remnants of Okami and Viewtiful Joe series developer Clover Studio after Capcom shut it down, will be known as Platinum Games as of October 1. The name change comes about as a result of Seeds' merger with ODD, a Japanese company about which little is known.

Though Seeds has yet to unveil its first title, the studio has drawn much attention due to what Shacknews editor-in-chief Chris Remo describes as a "preposterously talented staff." Among the company's all-star game development staff are Resident Evil creator and God Hand director Shinji Mikami, Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe creator Hideki Kamiya, and Shadow of the Colossus veteran Yuta Kimura.

"We are the Seeds that caused the vibrant flowers Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Steel Battalion, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami to come into bloom," the company announced when it was formed this past February. "Now, with a renewed spirit, we want to once again challenge the world of entertainment. But to do this, we need many, many more seeds... Would you like to make some 'preposterously amazing' games with us?"

DualShock 3 More Advanced Than DualShock 2, Claims Metal Gear Solid 4 Developer

Sep 26, 2007 9:54am CST tags: Capcom, Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony
Contrary to official reports from Sony, Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton has gone on the record to state that the rumble in the DualShock 3 is more advanced than its DualShock 2 counterpart.

While discussing the rumble in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) on the studio's podcast, guest John Ricciardi brought up the game's use of positional rumble--a feature not found in the DualShock 2.

"Is it safe to definitively say that the rumble in the DualShock 3 is better than the rumble in DualShock 2?" Ricciardi asked.

"Absolutely, yeah," responded Payton. "I mean, it feels better."

Payton went on to reveal that Kojima Productions and several other developers, including Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 team, had only received the tools to implement rumble a week before the Tokyo Game Show. The last minute rush to integrate new functionality calls to mind similar reports regarding the unveiling of Sixaxis motion control at Sony's E3 2006 press briefing.

Mario Golf Devs Bringing Wii Golf Game Stateside

Sep 14, 2007 6:51pm CST tags: Capcom, Tecmo, Games: Console
Capcom confirmed today its previously announced We Love Golf! from Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf developer Camelot will be released in North America. The Wii-specific title will be available sometime in 2008.

The title will retail in Japan this winter. The visuals from the project's Japanese website and the similar name indicate it is most likely an adaptation of Camelot's canceled PC project Golf Daisuki: I Love Golf. The PC title was supposed to be offered as part of an online entertainment service that never materialized.

The announcement describes We Love Golf! as "a realistic golfing experience with a fresh new spin," and the game incorporates detection of fades or draws with wrist movements. Hopefully the title will bring more to the table than Tecmo's Super Swing Golf, released for the Wii last year.

Upcoming Wii games from Capcom include the Nintendo Zapper-supporting rail-shooter Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, coming in November, and the preposterously named adventuring title Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure, also coming this fall.
