First Post!

Wow I thought for sure that I was gonna win that poll, thanks ;) * group hug * hey don't touch my ass. Ok so right, I started working on the enhancing of the search engine. I didn't get too many suggestions, but post #12 is exactly what I'm gonna try and do. There will also be a "top 20 searches" and "top 20 last searches" so you can find out what kind of horrifying things your fellow shack visitors are searching for.

As those of you probably wanting to attend saw yesterday, the CPL announced a delay of of registration of the Razer / CPL event in April because of heavy loads that caused the registration software to fail. I can't believe this is happening to so many big LAN events. It looks so stupid. It's happened before and now it's still happening. You are shooting for around a 1000 people at attend. That means more than a thousand will try and register. That means on the day that you open registration more than a thousand people will hit your site at the same time for multiple times. A lot of processes will be started. That = not good. Install mod_perl, it will help. Sure it may still slow down a whole lot, but it will help. Also configure your Apache right. There, I'm done :)

note by Steve: It was actually the 3rd party credit card authentication server that couldnt handle the load. Not CPL's servers. You can also see a comment (#23) here by Angel Munoz, the CPL president.

Just got this word from the Cyberathlete folks. It looks like the $100,000 Quake3 tournament is going to be held in Dallas now. $40,000 cash purse for first prize guys, that's a lot of pepsi & m&m's.

Dallas, Texas - January 7, 2000 -- The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) announced today that the Razer / CPL $100,000 Tournament and LAN Event has been moved to Dallas, Texas. Originally set to take place in Los Angeles, California, in the month of March, the CPL was unable to secure appropriate space for an event of this size in an acceptable time frame. Instead the CPL will hold an event in Los Angeles on June 2000 and has moved the Razer / CPL Event to Dallas.

So, with the PGL disappearing and the CPL taking off like crazy with stuff like their $100,000 Quake3 tournament to be held next year on the west coast as well as i2e2 doing some UT tourneys, a lot of people are still wondering if this whole professional gamer thing is going to take off. Challenge-US has a look at Quake3 from the perspective of a professional gamer.

Professional Gaming

Loonygames has a new article up taking a look at the rise and fall of the PGL and some talk about the other gaming tournaments and leagues around the world offering up all those big cash prizes. The Cyberthlete Professional League being the only one in regular operation currently. From the progress CPL has been making and the recent announcement of that $100,000 CASH Quake3 tournament last month I would say this stuff is already happening, there is no more question about it.

While You Were Gone

A few fairly interesting things went down over the weekend. The most interesting thing was probably the CPL announcement of a $100,000 Quake3 tournament. They are giving away $40,000 CASH to the first place winner. Also, that all so freaky Alice game has a new website and I ganked images. Something that drove a few people crazy was the release of some Half-Life Opposing Force footage. After you check that out there was some clarification on that Blair Witch game (article1 and article2). Oh yeah, and lastly in case you missed it last Friday evening the Mac Unreal Tournament demo was released.
