A little more follow-up on the RazerCPL $100,000 Quake3 tournament that went down recently. In case you missed it here are all of the pictures I took. and now Stomped has a picturebook as well. In addition, you can check out the wrap-up over at Cached.net. If you feel like reading some opinion, here's an article on Gamesmack which is pretty negative. Lastly there are some interviews on www.quake-arena.de

7yr Olds & Cheerios

Apr 18, 2000 3:48pm CST tags: CPL, Wack News
Incredibly exciting day eh? Well, pretty much 'recovered' from that whole RazerCPL event. Good fun. The QIL3 teamplay finals are coming up next in California in just a couple of weeks.

Isnt this one just amazing. Some 7yr old kid drove off in his parents car using 'skills learned at a computer game' going through busy intersections and traveling 3 miles in search of some Cheerios because he ran out at home. General Mills heard about the kid and is gonna hook him up with a year supply of the cereal now. Anyone else find it curious how the press glosses over the fact that the kid could have easily gotten killed? Oh yeah, he could have at least been after a good cereal. Cheerios? WTF? Get some fruity pebbles or Froot Loops or something.

Ack, sorry for the late start. I thought Steve would get back in action because I'm home kinda late for the rest of the week, but apparently he didn't recover yet from Razer / CPL ;) But hey I'll get it all up.

Ok guys as promised I put together captions for the nearly 100 pictures of the RazerCPL $100,000 Quake3 tournament that just finished. You can check out the captions and index of screenshots here. Or you can just go straight to the pictures of day1, day2, day3 and the finals day

Speaking of CPL, they have announced the cancellation of the California event due to a schedule conflict with QuakeCon which may be offering cash prizes now.

Razer CPL Aftermath

The $100,000 Razer / CPL event finished yesterday, here's some links if you pretty much missed the whole weekend. First of all, the game results of every match can be seen on the Netgames USA stats site. The page also lists who won what amount of money, if you want to scare yourself by seeing someone win $40k for playing some game ;) Eurogamer has a 36 page write-up of all the rounds, also offering pictures and some interviews. Quake3mods.net has a couple of pictures and four short mpg movies. The AVault has mp3's of both the John Carmack as well as the John Romero workshop. If you're looking for Steve's pictures, here's day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4.

Weekend Wrap-up

Apr 17, 2000 9:00am CST tags: CPL, Games: PC
The main thing going on this weekend was of course the Razer / CPL event, but some other things happened as well. The 1B patch for Q3 Fortress was released, offering about 80 fixes/additions. Also there was news on the NV15 card from Creative, which supposedly is going to be priced at $349 which ain't exactly cheap. Here's a collection of Razer CPL news from Sunday (and update). Lastly, the first version of UT Rocket Arena was released, but as you can see it's been pulled.

Number two seed nB.fatal1ty just won the cool $40k at the Razer / CPL Quake3 tournament in a 13-0 win over number five seed D16-Makaveli (who is taking home $20k, not bad either). Game details can be found on Netgames USA. Congrats to both. I imagine Steve will have pictures later today.

update 8:00pm Steve: I'll have some more pictures including captions (yay) ready for Monday, takes a while to write this stuff up ya dig?

Razer CPL News

Nope, no pics from Steve last night, he was just too tired and decided to get some sleep instead of get pictures up. Tsk tsk. As if you didn't know, as you've probably been following this mofo anyway, the last 4 players in the Razer CPL championship bracket are nb.dethstalker, who will be playing against D16-Makaveli and PowerK will be playing against nB.fatal1ty. The matches will be played in about 3 and a half hours, be sure to hit the Netgames USA page or join #razercpl on irc.enterthegame.com. In the lower bracket, DOOMer, Blue, visE and DM-Sector are left. Their matches start at 10, follow the Netgames USA page for those scores too. Eurogamer has 3rd round write-ups online for you to read, and AVault has pics (chicks!, too bad there are guys in the pictures too). Redwood over at Stomped snapped a few pictures too, and there are also pictures here taken by Ravenshadow (with captions on the jpgs). And lastly, there's even some mainstream coverage, by ways of a story by Associated Press.

Carmack Workshop Write-up

Apr 15, 2000 10:40am CST tags: CPL, John Carmack, Quake 3 Arena
Eurogamer has a good write-up of the John Carmack workshop from yesterday at the Razer / CPL event. He touched on a number of subjects, but also a little bit on their next project (after the mission pack), saying they will be taking a "somewhat different direction" with it, and probably won't be relevant to competitive gaming.

Hi welcome to Hexagon's Shugashack ;D Just kidding of course..OR AM I? Half way through Razer CPL, with Steve real busy with that. Anyone found any pictures of him in action as MC yet? Also there was a Shugashack/HardOCP hosted sumo wrestling event yesterday (in those air suits), but I dont know if he ended up actually wrestling himself. Here's a picture of that from AVault. That's even more hardcore than playing Quake3 on the PC I tell ya :p

Well, Day2 of the RazerCPL tournament has concluded and the field is down to 64 players. I've got another dump of pictures from the camera for you guys to check out. Running really short on time so cant really bust out the captions. Once the event is concluded though I'll run through all the pics and tell you guys just what the heck is going on. In case you missed it here are a bunch of pictures from day1 of the event. Hopefully a few guys in the comments can be helpful identifying folks for ya. Also I plan on getting mpegs of some of the players as they move into the final 32. Here's a sample mpeg that is just about a meg panning around the event.

Also, does the server seem any faster? Tried to track down that router problem but it seems to have gone away after a couple of days. Those problems are the worst kind because you just get that feeling its gonna show back up sooner or later.

Ok guys, I've got a bunch of pictures from the first day of the RazerCPL event for you to check out. It's just a dump straight from the camera so they arent organized all that well. There are pictures of the event, the tournament area, the players, etc etc.

Also, Verio is aware of the nasty packetloss problems a portion of the people are getting to the page. Looks like a bum router that should get fixed some time this week. Sorry if you get some slowdowns. Here are the pictures of the event. and a few pics of some r3v guys gettin some practice in at the house.

Well, down here at the big Quake3 tournament and we've been pushing through the FFA rounds getting things in line for the 1on1 part of the event. You can follow the status of the scores and demos here on NetGames. The winners of the FFA rounds so far have been: Cujo-r3v, D|S-Nido, BONE.FH, 4ReVeNaNt, and specie.

Got a bunch of pictures of the event and players as well, but being the super-genious that I am those wont get posted till late tonight when I get home to get it all organized. They are coming though, honest!

Razer CPL News

Apr 13, 2000 10:05am CST tags: CPL, Quake 3 Arena
Some unfortunate news from the CPL, as Russian player Pele has been denied a visa despite his own and CPL's attempts to get him one (was kinda known for a while, now for sure though)

The winner of the Russian qualifier, Roman Alexandrovich Tatarinov [AKA Pele], will not be able to attend the international Razer / CPL $100,000 Tournament since the American embassy has refused his request for a visa. The reason given to the CPL by the American embassy in Russia, was that they were "concerned about possible defection." They claim that there is a war going on in Russia, and Pele is less than one year from mandatory drafting.

This is a setback for international pro-gamer competitions, for the CPL and for its sponsors, which have expended enormous resources and capital to attract, the very best computer gamers in the world to its live tournaments. Pele [PK] was seeded 16th in the Razer / CPL $100,000 Tournament taking place April 13 through the 16th, in Dallas, Texas.

Meanwhile, over at AVault they have started their Razer CPL coverage, with a preview of what's to come the next few days. Also, there's an article at the Dallas Observer Online, talking to founder Angel Munoz about the Cyberathlete Professional League.

Yep for the next few days you're mainly gonna see me update, I'm afraid :) Today the Razer CPL event starts, and since Steve is the MC there and is also following most or all the matches, he won't be checking in until the evenings. After Sunday things will go back to the way they normally go around here (whatever that means).

Counter-Strike @ CPL

Domain of Pain will be hosting all the Counter-Strike events at the Razer CPL this weekend, with over $1500 in prizes to be won, including games and hardware. So it won't be just Quake3 :)
