Weekend Wrap-up

Jun 12, 2000 7:27am CST tags: CPL, id Software, Games: PC
Fairly quiet weekend. First on Friday we heard there might be another one of those Denial of Service attacks brewing, but this turned out to not be true. Then on Saturday new Half-Life server DLLs were released to fix some of the problems with the new 1.1 Half-Life server. There was also the Serious Sam interview on Old Man Murray. We now all know what Croatians think of id Software. And then yesterday, Fatality actually lost in a CPL tournament, with Blue going home with the big money. And also, it had to be proclaimed that the full version of MDK2 indeed rules as much as the demo.

Fatality Loses

Jun 11, 2000 2:29am CST tags: CPL, Quake 3 Arena
Just got this word in from the guys at Epicenter, it looks like Fatality, the $100,000 RazerCPL tournament champion has lost his first CPL match. The Taco Bell CPL tournament in Singapore is going down right now and S21.0 (yup, who?! a Korean player) has beaten Fatality by a score of 13 to 8. Here is a snapshot of the final score. Dont worry though about Fatality, he came back to play the S21.0 again and slapped him around 38 to 9. You can grab some demos from Cached. (direct link). The finals are set for Fatality vs [9]Blue (Fatality has to win twice, and [9]Blue once). That match will be played at 5am CST.Thanks Demosthenes

7am update by Maarten: Blue has won the CPL Asia tournament, after beating Fatality in the finals. The first round was 7 to 2 on Q3DM6 to Fatality, and the second round was 9 to 7 on Q3DM13 for Blue, winning the tournament. Again, you can grab the demos from Cached.

2pm update by Steve: You can check out some pictures of the events as well as demos on Stomped.

Across The World For Quake3

May 31, 2000 8:02am CST tags: CPL, Games: PC, E3
It looks like the upcoming FRAG4 CPL event is going to have one more ringer team in the mix. Clan[9] has announced a US division which isnt all that exciting by itself but the fact that 2 players are moving overseas and 1 more player across the nation just to play a game is pretty crazy. They even scored 2nd place CPL finisher Makaveli into the lineup.

FRAG4 Date Change

May 30, 2000 8:03am CST tags: CPL, Games: PC
The CPL announced that the date of FRAG 4 has been changed and will now be held September 28 through October 1. The online pre-purchase price has been lowered to $30, and at $99 a night the hotel rooms at the Hyatt Regency are now 20 bucks cheaper.

More On Pro Gaming

May 25, 2000 8:05am CST tags: CPL, Games: PC
Looks like pro-gaming is the flavor of the week. The folks at GamesOrb have a new article up offering some speculation on playing Quake3 as a professional sport as the CPL is already doing.

CPL Does Teamplay

May 23, 2000 6:35pm CST tags: CPL, Games: PC
As professional gaming is the flavor of the day, CPL has announced 2 more tournaments for this year. Firstly (and most excitingly to me) is a teamplay tournament to be held at the end of October. FRAG4. They prize purse will be about $30,000 cash. At the end of the year during mid-December they will be playing host to yet another $100,000 cash tournament sponsored by Babbages.

The FRAG 4 will be at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas and will take place October 26-29, 2000. This event will be different from all previous CPL events, as it will host the CPL's first deathmatch team tournament. The total cash prize for the team tournament is expected to be $30,000

Competitive Gaming

May 23, 2000 6:54am CST tags: CPL, Valve, Games: PC
GamePig has an excellent article talking with 3 different industry figures about the future of competitive gaming. Angel Munoz of the CPL, Ryan Feltrin of GrayMatter (Wolf2K) and Gabe Newell of Valve (and PowerPlay). Also mentioned in the article is that the CPL will be hosting teamplay tournaments in the future. Considering Angel's comments in the interview one can assume they will be Quake3 teamplay.

By spectators, I'm insinuating that gaming as a competitive sport cannot survive without its spectators. So the key is to get them involved, much the way they do with current "competitive" sports.

Angel Munoz Interview

May 20, 2000 9:05am CST tags: CPL, Games: PC, Interview
GamersHome has an interview with the president of the Cyberathlete League, Angel Munoz. Topics covered include of course professional gaming and the future of the CPL.
