Take-Two Dates Borderlands, Mafia 2 for FY 2009; Midnight Club: Los Angeles This Fall

Mar 11, 2008 4:05pm CST tags: Take-Two Interactive Software, Rockstar, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Borderlands, Mafia 2
Take-Two Interactive today clarified a number of release dates for its upcoming titles.

The publisher revealed that Gearbox Software's Borderlands (PC, PS3, X360) and 2K Czech's Mafia II (PC, PS3, X360) are positioned for release sometime in Take-Two's 2009 fiscal year, which runs from November 1, 2008 through October 31, 2009.

The new date marks a delay for the co-op friendly Borderlands, which was originally slated to arrive within Take Two's 2008 fiscal year. Prior to today, no release date had been announced for Mafia II.

Additionally, Rockstar San Diego's Midnight Club: Los Angeles (PS3, X360) was confirmed for release in the company's FY2008 fourth quarter, pinning the title's release window between August 1 and October 31, 2008.

The game was originally aimed for a spring 2008 release, but was delayed to prevent competition with Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360).

Update: 2K Games has sent over two screenshots of Borderlands.
Following Game Informer's reveal of the game and subsequent confirmation by Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, 2K Games today announced that it will publish Borderlands.

The game is described as being a sci-fi action one, with full co-op support, vehicular combat and featuring a content generation system allowing for "near-endless variety" in mission, environment, enemy, weapon, item and character customization.

"Borderlands creates a universe of gameplay that goes far beyond anything anyone would expect. We're tapping into every bit of Gearbox Software's experience with the biggest science fiction video game franchises, then taking everything way past the next level," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. "The team at 2K Games shares our passion for pushing boundaries in gameplay and storytelling and are absolutely perfect partners for Borderlands."

Borderlands will be released during the holiday 2008 season on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

It appears a road warrior influence is in the air; just days after id Software announced Rage, Brothers in Arms developer Gearbox Software has revealed Borderlands, which a Game Informer cover story describes as "Diablo meets Mad Max."

Borderlands, in development for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, is a science fiction RPG/FPS hybrid, with support for up to four cooperative players online. Vehicles are likely to be significantly involved. Few further details are currently available, with Game Informer promoting a Borderlands cover story in its September issue and an official announcement likely coming soon.

Update: Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has emailed Shacknews with confirmation of the game announcement. "We are really excited to finally reveal the game since it's been in top-secret production at Gearbox for so long and because of the unbelievable things the team has accomplished with the game play engineering that will push the genre so far forward," he wrote. "Perhaps I'll stop by the Shacknews forums later today and post a few things and maybe answer a few questions..."
