Update: According to Big Download and Blue's News, Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders were listed as Steam's second top-grossing game for the week of 11/8 - 11/14, though it seems that listing disappeared after the game launched on November 17.

Original: The week before Left 4 Dead 2's release curiously saw Valve's zombie shooter get left behind by digital customers, as online pre-orders for the sequel slipped from the number three spot on Steam's top ten to, well, a position not listed on the chart.

Unsurprisingly, sales juggernaut Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 topped Steam's charts, with Direct2Drive, which refuses to sell MW2, seeing Dragon Age reign again.

As promised mere moments ago, Gearbox has released the v1.01 patch for Borderlands PC, with the 184MB update now available for your perusal on FileShack.

The update includes several notable tweaks for the shooter-RPG, including the addition of volume controls to voice chat, word that leaving a co-op game will no longer wipe your proficiency progress, and a refunding of any character's lost skill points.

Borderlands had "the fastest-selling original property video game launch of 2009," developer Gearbox proclaimed today alongside word of the imminent PC patch.

Exact sales figures for the shooter-RPG, which hit consoles and PC in October, weren't provided. Sales-tracking firm NPD recently revealed that the Xbox 360 version sold 418,000 copies in the United States during October, with the PlayStation 3 version netting sales of 113,000. Borderlands players on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will be able to buy the undead-themed downloadable content 'The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned' from November 24 for $10 (800 Microsoft Points), developer Gearbox has announced.

Revealed shortly before the shooter RPG's release, 'Dr. Ned' is a described as a "full-fledged expansion" which adds new areas, quests, undead enemies and rare loot.

While no release date was announced for a PC release, a posting on the Gearbox Twitter confirms that the ghoulish DLC "will come to PC." Another explains there is yet "no... ETA" on the upcoming patch for the PC version, "but it is being worked on (long hours and weekends, too)."

Developer Gearbox has rolled out a pair of updates for Borderlands, bringing a number of bug fixes and tweaks to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.

On its official forums, the company vowed that it is "continuing work on support updates for all platforms, and will deploy fixes for every version as soon as possible."

Players will be prompted to download the patch upon booting the shooter-RPG while signed in to Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. Full details follow below:

Gearbox's Mikey Neumann has been billed as many things. Sometimes, he's "a guy who can get you things." Other times, he's a creative director. Today, he's answering some of the questions I had after wrapping up my initial playthrough of Borderlands.

And before we got around to discussing the ending--rest assured that spoilers are limited to the third page--we chatted about a variety of topics that any fan of Borderlands should find interesting, including talk of downloadable content and a vow that "we'll look at what the community really latches on to or wants, and we'll move in that direction."

Shack: Any plans to expand on item trading beyond the "drop this on the ground and hope the right person picks it up" honor system?

Update: Gearbox's Gibson sends word that the problem has been fixed, saying in a release: "We are very pleased to report that using PSN friends lists with the game should now work properly for all PS3 customers."

A few bugs leaving some Borderlands users unable to start co-op matches in the PlayStation 3 version of the game are currently being hammered out, according to developer Gearbox.

"We've identified the problem and are working on a fix," wrote Scott "vatoloco" Velasquez on the official Gearbox forum. Users are reporting being unable to invite friends into games, and many are encountering long wait times when looking for public matches.

"We'll find out very soon if the issue exists for the PS3 International versions of the Borderlands," he said. "If it does, we'll hopefully have a fix implemented before it affects those customers. We are doing everything we can to get this problem addressed as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, Gearbox marketing VP Steven Gibson sends word that supplies of Borderlands are running short at many retailers, and that the company is "working with production and distribution at ramping up to catch up with demand."

If you've been following Borderlands from the get-go, then you won't need much of an explanation. You won't need a reminder that it has been billed as a hybrid between the first-person shooting of Halo and the addictive nature of Diablo. Right now, all you want to know is if it's worth playing; if Gearbox managed to meet its lofty aspirations.

In short, yes. That's not to say the game is free of annoyances and oddities, far from it. But despite the flaws, Borderlands offers an addictive experience that I can't stop playing.

Above all else, Borderlands really nails the feeling of character progression, of ever-increasing power. It feels like every quest, from gunning down an enemy to gathering the scattered pieces of a revolver, actually matters. Each action, each experience point, brings players one step closer to the next level, to being able to afford that nice rocket launcher sitting in the vending machine. Borderlands publisher 2K Games has announced the first batch of downloadable content for Gearbox's upcoming shooter-RPG, titled The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned.

"Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned... does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region," 2K explains, describing it as a "full-fledged expansion." The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned will bring "new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops" for $10 (800 Microsoft Points).

In August, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford enthused "People are going to be surprised when they find out how quickly we're coming, and with what content we're coming."

Borderlands will hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 20, with the PC version pushed back until October 26. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned arrives "later this year."

The fall games season is officially underway, and the publishers are off to the races. Gearbox's Borderlands is out of the gate with this TV spot, plugging the game's four player co-op, item randomization, and friendly NPC inhabitants.

Joining Tekken 6 and Ratchet & Clank Future, Gearbox today revealed that its colorful shooter-RPG Borderlands has gone gold and entered manufacturing on all three platforms.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Borderlands hit North America on October 20 and Europe on October 23. The PC version follows a week later--October 26 in North America, October 30 in Europe--due to optimization. In its mailing, Gearbox noted that the console versions had "already gone off to the presses" while the PC edition was just "wrapped up."

On the plus side, various shops are currently offering Borderlands PC for $45--$15 less than the console versions--provided you don't mind the wait and have a capable rig.

In a new interview with Maximum PC, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford claims that Valve's dominance in the PC digital distribution arena could come to hurt the industry, citing a "dangerous" conflict of interest and a lack of competition that has already lead to the exploitation of smaller developers.

"I'll tell you what, Steam helps. As a guy in this industry though, I don't trust Valve," said Pitchford, who later clarified that while he personally trusts the company, "a lot of the industry doesn't."

"Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service it's providing," he said. "It's exploiting a lot of small guys. For us big guys, we're going to sell the units and it will be fine."

Though the PC release of Borderlands isn't due until October 26--a week after the PlayStaiton 3 and Xbox 360 editions--digital distribution outlet Steam is looking to make the wait a little easier on your wallet by knocking 10% off PC pre-orders.

Developer Gearbox has issued a lone new screenshot from its coming action-RPG Borderlands, along with a tease that it's been keeping "a lot" of the game under wraps.

Following up on the first entry in its "Making of Borderlands" series, developer Gearbox has now released the second. And while this one doesn't pack any of the promised "cop drama," it does feature a line that held up its release due to legal concerns.

The PC version of Gearbox's open-world RPG-shooter Borderlands has been delayed by six days to provide a little more optimisation time, according to an IGN report.

Borderlands will now hit PC in North America on October 26, back from the original date of October 20, while the international release will not arrive until October 30.

"We're optimizing the PC version which takes a few days longer than expected," Charlie Sinhaseni, senior PR manager at publisher 2K Games, told IGN.

A few weeks ago, I stopped by Gearbox's offices to play Borderlands for a few hours. Since then, the wait to play more of the shooter-RPG has grown increasingly agonizing, and the five new gameplay clips released today (below) only make it that much worse.

While my time with the game was brief, it made quite a strong impression on me. By the time I had to go, I could already feel the addiction setting in--that drive to slay just one more foe, to do just one more quest, to gain just one more level before leaving.

At least two downloadable content batches surprising in content and speed of release will hit Gearbox's Diablo-esque shooter Borderlands, according to CEO Randy Pitchford.

"People are going to be surprised when they find out how quickly we're coming, and with what content we're coming," Eurogamer reports Pitchford saying in a Gamescom presentation. "Also, we're going to watch and see what happens when the game launches, so we can have our plans affected by what our customers want more of."

A Twitter post by Pitchford reveals "The first 2 Borderlands DLC packs will be all new - not stuff that was cut or held back!" Gearbox's Mikey Neumann told us at E3 that DLC is often birthed during the certification period--which Borderlands is currently in.
