Shack Interview: BioShock

Sep 14, 2006 6:30am CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock, Interview
New for you guys this morning is a BioShock interview, as David got to ask Ken Levine of Irrational Games about the PC/Xbox 360 action game which is due out next year.
Ken Levine: First off, BioShock is not only ambitious from a visual standpoint, we have really set a demanding goal for ourselves: we intend to redefine what gamers expect from a first-person shooter. We want BioShock to do for FPS games what Gran Turismo did for the racing genre, or GTA did for the action genre: To raise the bar for features, user choice, open-endedness, immersion, story and setting, and replayability. Imagine going back to Ridge Racer after Gran Turismo, or Driver after GTA. You can’t. What goes into this? Well, starting with the environments and look of the game, a huge amount of work. To be honest, we blew it the first time around. The first prototype we took to Take 2 really didn’t work. Fortunately, they let us go back and try again. To me, that’s the real difference between having a decent budget for the first time: second chances.

Take-Two Interactive Acquires Irrational Games

Jan 09, 2006 12:44pm CST tags: Ken Levine, 2K Games, BioShock
Gamasutra reports that rumor has it that Irrational Games has been acquired by Take 2 Interactive. Irrational has been working on the Unreal Engine powered BioShock, and the SWAT 4 expansion pack The Stetchkov Syndicate. Not too long ago Take 2 trademarked the name BioShock though it was never officially announced that Take 2 would be publishing the game. Gamasutra's story also mentions that the staff email announcing this news mentions a 2007 date for BioShock (a spiritual successor of sorts to the System Shock games). Update: an official announcement is now available.
2K Games has multiple titles in development at Irrational's North American and Australian studios. The first title to be published under the 2K Games label will be BioShock, a role-playing shooter for next-generation console systems and PC. Already anticipated by the gaming press as one of the most innovative next-generation titles, BioShock is planned for release in early 2007.

"We are excited to be aligned with a publishing label like 2K Games that shares similar development goals and vision," said Ken Levine, co-founder and President of Irrational Games. "Fans will be blown away when they see the next-generation titles we are working on."

BioShock Unveiled

Oct 08, 2004 5:30pm CST tags: Ken Levine, BioShock
As promised, GameSpot has posted their first look at the new Irrational Games production, which is called BioShock. The Unreal engine powered first person action RPG takes place in a "mysterious genetic laboratory", which is inhabited by various creatures which at point were of the human kind, but definitely aren't any longer. BioShock isn't a sequel to the System Shock games, but Irrational does hope to "further the open-ended, emergent gameplay of the previous games".
While System Shock 2 represented what Irrational general manager Ken Levine describes as "a convergence of technology and commercialism" (that game took place on a corporate-sponsored starship), BioShock will instead represent "a convergence of technology and biological life," or more specifically, genetics. It's important to note: BioShock is not a sequel to any of the System Shock games, nor does it have any official relation to those games. But like the previous games, this one will offer a horror-themed gameplay experience in which what you observe, and what happens to you, will be tempered by your own choices. "[At Irrational], we think emergence is the future," says Levine.
