Battlefield 2142 Preview

Oct 10, 2006 5:51am CST tags: Battlefield 2142, Battlefield
Coming out next week is DICE's fourth installment in the Battlefield franchise with Battlefield 2142. Marek recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with the game at a European press event, here are his impressions.
The buildings on the ground are only futuristic by virtue of having metal plating on the outside; otherwise the environments feel mostly like a re-skinning of Battlefield 2 rather than a brand new arena. With few exceptions, the hand weapons are very conventional, not really taking advantage of the possibilities offered by a sci-fi setting. Granted, the setting and its atmosphere are perhaps not the most critical elements in a competitive multiplayer game, but following Battlefield 2's contemporary desert combat and Battlefield Vietnam's lush jungles and 1960s music, the world of 2142 feels cold and characterless. Of course, whether this is an issue at all depends a lot on your personal preferences.

In case you hadn't yet, be sure to grab the demo and make up your own mind about the game.

Shack Interview: Battlefield 2142

Sep 05, 2006 1:03pm CST tags: Battlefield, Interview
EA recently held a preview event for Digital Illusions CE's upcoming Battlefield 2142, so I took the opportunity to get some questions from curious Shackers and present them to DICE producer Kristoffer Bergqvist. Though technical problems sabotaged the interview, Shacker alias offered his services and was instrumental in salvaging a majority of the exchange. Subjects briefly discussed include EA's recent in-game advertising deal, widescreen support in BF2142, and whether the number of nodes in Conquest mode takes after Battlefield 1942 or Battlefield 2.
Shack: Recently, EA announce that, among other games, Battlefield 2142 will include in-game advertising. This seems like kind of an odd thing, given that the game is so far in the future. What steps are being taken there?

Kristoffer Bergqvist: The biggest issue for me is that the ads should not take you out of the game in any way. So, you won't see a pop-up ad or something. We have things like in-game [billboards], and they're very much in the art style of what Battlefield 2142 is, they're dirty and they fit with the world. We also have control of what ads are sent out, so of course we're going to try to have things that are appropriate with the game world.
