Rumor: iPhone Getting Official Gamepad [Updated]

Update: iPhone amateur development site ModMyiFone has received word from Belkin that the JoyPod is not a real product.

Original Story:Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch may be getting a gamepad and official support for it, if a purported accessory leak is to be believed. A supposed information sheet from accessory maker Belkin on TouchArcade added to a handful of claimed gamepad accessories for the iPhone.

This one, however, claims to support the iTunes App Store, the online store to buy software and games for the iPhone. Supporting the App Store implies that Belkin has gotten clearance from Apple to sell the pad, which means support for it could even be included in future versions of the iPhone SDK, the software package for iPhone game creators.

Combining touch sensitivity with motion sensing has even led Forbes to declare that the iPhone "could kill the Nintendo DS," which was the first gaming handheld to support a touch screen. Stylus support a la Nintendo DS ... Read more

Independent developer Noah Witherspoon has revealed that his free Tetris-esque iPhone puzzler Tris will be removed from the iTunes App Store this Wednesday, following a strongly worded letter from Apple sent on behalf of The Tetris Company.

The Tetris Company, which owns and licenses the Tetris property, accused Witherspoon of violating its copyright. Witherspoon added that Apple was poised to "take action" if he did not resolve the "dispute" of his own accord.

Left, Noah Witherspoon's Tris. Right, EA Mobile's Tetris.

"The approach they're taking seems to me little more than petty bullying," Witherspoon wrote on his blog. "They have little to no legitimate legal claim, and are, presumably, relying on my being a small developer with insufficient resources to defend myself."

While he was confident that the claim could be challenged in court, Witherspoon opted to remove the game due to his lack of funds and status as a college... Read more

Update 8: The 8GB iPhone 3G will sell for $200. There will be a 16GB model for $300, which will also be available in white.

Update 7: The company has revealed the iPhone 3G, which, compared to the original iPhone, is thinner, has 3G and GPS support plus a plastic back. No word yet on pricing or a possible price drop for the standard iPhone.

Update 6: Jobs says that "the number one reason people didn't buy iPhones is because they just can't afford it...as we arrive on the iPhone's first birthday, we're going to take it to the next level."

Update 5: The App Store will be available in 62 countries. Applications less than 10MB can be downloaded through the cell phone network--anything larger will require a wireless access point or iTunes.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs reaffirmed that App Store developers will keep... Read more

Forbes: iPhone 'Could Kill Nintendo DS'

Jun 05, 2008 10:00pm CST tags: iPhone, Apple, Nintendo
The touch screen interface and motion-sensitive features of Apple's iPhone could wrestle dominance of the handheld gaming market away from the Nintendo DS, Forbes writer Brian Caulfield suggested in a recent editorial.

"Apple is the first to master a pair of tricks that have made Nintendo's latest products so compelling—a touch-screen interface and the ability to pick up on motion," Caulfield wrote. "Apple has crammed both capabilities into its iPhone and iPod Touch."

The editorial goes on to suggest that the ability to wirelessly purchase and download software for the iPhone via its App Store interface, coming in a software update next week, will further strengthen the device as a handheld ... Read more
