More on 3dfx

Feb 02, 2000 5:42pm CST tags: 3dfx
Seems that GA-Source did some of that "confirming rumors" stuff that some "press" do to get "facts." Pshaw! Anyway, they got a confirmation from 3dfx's Brian Burke that there were indeed layoffs and that most were spun off to the Specialized Technology Group, which is a division of 3dfx. He didn't confirm my numbers though, which is to be expected given the timing of the layoffs (within hours of the fiscal year ending).

By the way, in my numbers when I said 5% of the 20%, I meant, like, 5% of the company, not 1% (whoops). Also, that 5% wasn't necessarily from STB, there were people laid off that were there pre-STB as well.

3dfx Layoffs & Spinoff(!)

Feb 02, 2000 4:52pm CST tags: 3dfx
I’ve got a Shack scoop for you guys. After hearing from various people that 3dfx went through some layoffs on Monday, I decided to dig a bit and find out what was up.

So I finally got the scoop. There was a 20% Reduction In Force at 3dfx on Monday (right after their fiscal year ended, likely so they could delay in reporting it). 5% of the 20% were pure layoffs, and the remaining 15% was spun off (or will spin off) into their own company. This 15% was the advanced multimedia group of former STB. I don’t know the new company’s name, but this news is very good for 3dfx stock-wise. This should help their fiscal Q1 and spinning off the advanced multimedia group shows that they’re willing to trim down the core company of people that really aren’t needed since the STB merger. Here is a link to the follow-up for people coming to this news item directly.

3dfx & 0.15 Micron

Feb 01, 2000 10:55am CST tags: 3dfx
Guess we'll make it a hardware kind of day. According to this PR over at RaingBull it looks like 3dfx already has their eyes on some 0.15 micron technology. (That's small). Here's a snippit (Thanks VE) It's not completely clear if this is intended for the Voodoo4/5 line aka Napalm or the generation after that aka Rampage. Hopefully we'll know later today

"Our benchmarks have shown that we can achieve our system goals at 0.15 micron with the performance and density of the Virtual Silicon eSi-Route/8(TM) standard cell library," said Brian Kelleher, vice president of VLSI engineering at 3DFX Interactive, Inc. "We are impressed by the early availability and thoroughness of the test chip results published by Virtual Silicon."
