Planescape: Torment

If Diablo 2 is all the rpg you need in your crpgs, then stay far far away from this game.

That said, Torment is in my top 5 (possibly even top 3) crpgs of all time. The writing in it is simply unmatched. The game plays much like a good book reads: intelligent, emotional, and superbly written. Standing out notably are the sequences with Ravel and the final chapter. And oh the ending! I must have played/watched it over a dozens letting the emotional impact (and luscious score) sink in. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

On a technical level the only downside would be the limited 640x480 resolution but other than that the game holds up surprisingly well. Some of the spell cutscenes are still really impressive.

Simply put, Torment is a masterpiece.
