Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
This is a good action/adventure game with some Resident Evil type puzzles, especially for fans of Lovecraft.
Story: The story of the game centers on a power struggle between 4 old gods. The main character in the game is Alex who is the latest generation in a family with a long history in the battle between the gods.
Gameplay: The gameplay is quest based item-puzzles with monster combat. The main object is to solve a problem in each visit to a certain level, which requires smaller sub-puzzles to be solved. In each level, the character must acquire the tome in order to cast spells. The spells will help remove obstacles, which must be removed to meet the objectives of the level.
The puzzles are generally logical (at least in terms of the game). For example, in the game each color of magic is strong and weak against another color. So, when encountering a magic barrier of one color, only a spell with different color will remove it. Examples in the cutscenes are very important. Usually, if something happens in an in-game, engine cutscene the character will need to reproduce the actions.
The problems with the game arenÂ’t many, but are bad IMHO. First, the game is short (about 12 hours), but tedious. Once a puzzle is solved a certain way, expect that solution to be used over and over again. It seems like the designers only thought up about 10 solutions to 100 puzzles. The idea of returning to the same set of levels across many generations is interesting, but the problem is the same situations will be encountered again and again. The final and worst problem is the final level. There is a puzzle with no explanation (there really shouldnÂ’t be one, if the game is following the installed logic), which requires the character to run back and forth across the level *9* times, and since each puzzle and level is revisited, this will need to be done *twice*. About 2 hours of gameplay are spent doing just this task.
Graphics: This game will run in both 480p and 16x9 (in 16x9 mode, the gameplayÂ’s aspect is correct, but the cut scenes are boxed in vertical and horizontal). The graphics are poly models on a pre-rendered background. The graphics are good, but not a system demo. The best feature of the graphics are the insanity effects. At certain times strange things will happen to the display (what looks like an insect crawling across the TV or the Cube rebooting {it doesnÂ’t actually reboot}).
Each of the levels are revisited via the different characters, and the levels age and are affected by the events that happen off screen. For example, a church becomes a WW1 hospital, which is modernized. The first visit to the church is in the inquisition, and it is decorated appropriately.
Sound: The sound is excellent, especially if played thru Dobly 2. The insanity affects the sound in many creepy ways. For example, there will be babies wailing in the rear speakers, gods speaking to the characters thru one of the different channels.
