Day of the Tentacle
Another classic Lucasarts point and click adventure game. It's only slightly edged out by Sam and Max as their best, and in a market dominated by one company, that's hardly a bad position.
The CD version of this was incredible. It's another game I saw whilst abroad - it was in Australia, playing a looping demo on a monitor in the middle of the store. I stood there, and I have no idea how many times I watched it through, but I can still remember it now. The graphics were fluid and well drawn, the voices were appropriate and the dialogue was humourous. It all fit like a really tight surgical glove.
Three different people are thrown to different places in time, and it's your job to get them back together to foil the purple tentacle's plans to..take over the world. You can flick between the three characters when you want (although one has to be "unlocked" by doing something further in the past..), so if you get stuck on one you can switch, which, while not providing three games, does allow you to carry on playing where in other games you would be totally stuck. The puzzles were never too abstract- sometimes in Sam and Max, when you found the solution, you were left thinking wtf? DOTT never seemed to suffer from this problem.
A little easter egg in the game... you can play the entire original Maniac Mansion! I'll leave you to find it..
If you can get the game to work now, or have an old computer to play it on, do so. The whole point and click genre is great in that they're still as good today as they were then. The cartoony feel of the game is great, and the voice acting equally so. It's hanging around in most game shops as a budget release, so there's no excuse.
