Call of Duty: Black Ops Patch Tweaks CPU Performance

23
Another patch was deployaed for the PC edition of Treyarch's record-breaking shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops on Saturday via Steam, bringing more much-awaited performance tweaks and fixes for a handful of other issues.

As with the previous performance patch, there's no clear consensus on how much this actually remedies the PC version's notorious performance woes, as our own Xav experienced. If you played Cod Blops on PC over the weekend, how did you find it?

Here's the short but sweet changelog for Saturday's patch:

  • CPU performance improvements
  • Zombie matchmaking improvements
  • Fix for locked ADS after pressing shift-TAB to bring up Steam overlay
  • Fix for ADS while holding shift as a sniper

There's actually more frequent hitching of a different sort for me, usually felt as the mouse input getting very non-distinct and usually ending up in my facing a different way to the way I was intending, running with FRAPS showing the FPS shows that it drops from 100FPS+ to what measures as 40FPS when this happens, but it's almost like it's displaying 40 and throwing away every other frame it intended to display making it very... shuddery?

This machine isn't brand new and state of the art, but it can hardly be accused of being underpowered. I mean, srsly.

So what you're saying is you threw an insane amount of computing power at it and it ran okay?

        well, good? :)

This Patch just made it worse for me....

Modern Warfare 2 runs at almost 100FPS at highest settings on my PC without a hitch..
      Craptastic job Treyarch.

Modern Warfare 2 is capped at 90fps - nice try though.

For a moment there you put me in doubt. I fired up MW2 and checked with Fraps.

            What about MP?

Surprisingly in MP I have less hitching but it's still there. The SP campaign is the worst though. To the point that I just quit the game because it starts to piss me off.

My game doesn't hitch or pause outright but it can drop as low as 20 FPS in MP which I find odd.

Resolution and AA and texture settings don't seem to make any difference either.
