Morning Discussion

Torchlight is now released and you all know the game is lovely because you have all bought and played it, yes? Yes. Good, now we can avoid that whole big topic and focus on the details. I cannot decide whether my favourite touch is skill scrolls or the bonus dungeons opened by killing those little purple portal creatures and buying maps.

What are you enjoying most about the game you most definitely are enjoying? Have you found any fantastic items to show off?

Patience? Usually RPGs take a little bit of an investment to get sucked into.

You should ask yourself: Why can't I enjoy 72 DPS clickfest RPGs?

Which one? It's probably because most RPGs are dumb or they are really JRPGs.

      What type of RPGs?

      Action or turn based?
      Japanese or western?
      2d or 3d?
      Story based or hacknslash based?

Hehe, I can understand both, MMORPG's are really their own breed, and maybe you're just not a fan of the hack-n-slash variety. There's two more RPG sub-genre's you should try before you rule it out completely. Them being the traditional JRPG and the Western RPG. Final Fantasy being the flagship really for JRPG's and most stuff from Bioware (think Baldur's Gate, Never Winter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic and the upcoming Dragon Age) being definitive of the other.

Both are loot-based and repetitive. There is more depth in both but if you can't get past that, I can understand how it might not be your cup of tea.

You might give Mass Effect 2 a shot when it comes out. Plenty of shooting, but actual "role playing" also, instead of it just being code-word for PHAT LEWT

RPGs also make you wait and work for your reward/feedback while in most other genres the reward is more immediate.

I've tried and disliked all of those games. I've put at least 4 hours into both Deus Ex and Vampire but much less into the other 2. I've also tried and disliked Zelda, Mass Effect, STALKER, Final Fantasy and probably many more. I wish that Bioshock and Fallout didn't have the RPG stuff. Loot I don't mind. Stats I find intolerable.

The humor was insanely unique in that game, but as far as RPG conventions go it had pretty much all of the old school stuff. Didn't see yourself during battle, 100% a points game and super spartan visuals, mountains of text, interesting that it's the only one you ever liked.
