Yeah this is pretty tempting. I read about performance issues on release but I think it was fixed in a patch?

Not at all. In fact, the developer has pulled all support for the title, so you won't be seeing any future patches.

I'm grabbing now, will report on its performance with a 4870.

I picked it up because every post about GTA IV patches had people saying Saints Row 2 was a proper PC port, and was more fun. Now its the opposite.

Cool, let us know, I am very curious. GTA4 runs great on my PC with fairly high end specs.

                    Alright, I'm running :

                    WinXP
                    Core 2 Duo 2.53ghz E7200
                    2 gigs of Ram
                    Radeon 4870 512mb

I just the ran game maxed out on settings, but AA at 2x and AF at 4x at 1920x1200. ran smooth, I'd guess between 20 and 40 fps on average. There were points where it would hiccup though.

oh, and the interface is retarded, left control and left shift to move through menu options is not smart.

Have you tried driving at high speeds yet? That's what seems to be worst, with lag as it loads in new parts of the city, though it seems to be mitigated slightly if the game's on RAID0.

I've also noticed it slowing down more as I get further into the game (no idea what percentage, but in my coop game we've done all the missions for 2 of the 4 gangs). Tthat may also be because I'm doing more long-distance driving and flying, and at higher speeds. I've had to turn my options down from what seemed ok at the beginning, including turning off the ambient occlusion which made the biggest difference. I do still have some dynamic lighting though, so it's not completely horrid looking yet.

But it makes up for it sometimes. I've ordered all my gang members to dress as ninjas, for example.

                      Oh:
                      Win Server 2008 x64
                      Core 2 Quad Q6600 3.0GHz
                      4GB
                      GTX260 896MB (not Core216)

Unfortunately ambient occlusion still runs like absolute shit in every game I've tried it in. Hopefully the newer cards will be able to handle it...

The game runs better on Nvidia btw but it runs acceptable on a 4890 in 1080p

GTA 4 released patches and improved. SR2 didn't. But SR2 is more focused on pure fun, enough so that I'm willing to put up with the lowered graphics settings, slowdowns and (occasional) laggyness on a GTX 260 (which runs GTA4 just fine). It has atrocious keyboard controls for driving, compared to GTA4. It's obviously made for an analog joypad (XBOX360 controller works fine on the PC version, but it's a pain to have to switch back to the mouse whenever you get out of a car), and was never tweaked for the digital WASD controls like GTA4 was.

But it will have you laughing out loud at its absurdness, just like the GTA series used to. There are occasional cutscenes with poor attempts at presenting a melodramatic, tough gangster life which sit in extreme contrast to the missions and gameplay. I think the devs are aiming to get laughs out of how your main character isn't too bright and doesn't quite realise that he's the one causing all his own problems, but they just seem kind of depressing to me. But you can make your character look as ridiculous as you like in the character creator, and watching a man with pink pigtails trying to talk tough can help lighten the mood. And when you're actually in the game you'll be laughing all the time.

If you have an xbox though, it's probably best to get it on that. It's a Steam game, BTW. Even if you buy it in a box or on D2D it will still be a key that gets entered into Steam and installed by Steam.

Its NOT "haha i thought M2 was supposed to be a shitty PC port as well"

It run like butter and is a real good port no issues what so ever.

For the record, I bought SR2 via Steam when it was first released, and it did have some framerate issues, which were addressed in an update. It's fully playable for me on my Q9450 w/ a 8800GTS.

And also for the record, Mercenaries 2 sucks balls.
