Transformers DLC Priced, Dated and Detailed

2

Having already teased some of the new playable characters coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen via downloadable content, publisher Activision blew the lid off the whole shebang today with a wealth of details.

Coming August 27 and priced at 800 MS Points ($10) the download packs eight new characters with tweaked weapons, new looks for existing characters, three more multiplayer maps, a harder difficulty mode, and the option to use Aerialbot in the single-player campaign. A breakdown of the new characters and maps follows:

New Characters:

  • G1 Optimus Prime

  • G1 Megatron

  • G1 Starscream

  • G1 Sunstorm

  • Soundwave

  • Sideswipe

  • Jazz

  • Jetfire (MP Only)

  • Aerialbot (SP Only)

New Skins

  • G1 colors Ratchet

  • G1 colors Sideswipe

  • Stealth Colors Bumblebee

New Maps:

  • Courtyard - Fast paced East Coast map that focuses on a heavily contested center action point. This key strategic area allows for views of the entire map as well as control of the high ground surrounding the middle courtyard and its perimeter. Flying characters are able to utilize the open skies and tall skyscrapers to quickly get to advantageous positions, but ground based characters can make use of numerous back alleys to flank around the sides of the map and attack from unprotected angles.

  • Hillside - A tiered map in a dense urban area of Cairo. Varied height sections on the map make for multiple small arenas of combat, while allowing sneaky players to move throughout the level virtually un-noticed under the cover the surrounding buildings. A central marketplace provides a high point to get views of almost the entire level, but the maze like street layout and numerous buildings mean that you will have to hunt your enemies down in the alleys of this ruined city.

  • Sandstorm - A very fast paced map that takes place in a smaller section of Cairo. Mostly populated with low level buildings and an open central area, combat on this map is fast and frenetic, with near instantaneous action as there is almost no place to hide. Flying characters can quickly hover above the map for near un-obstructed views of almost the entire map, but this also leaves them vulnerable to ground fire from almost every angle.

It's nothing special, or so I've heard.

it's quite bad. worst for me was how annoying the transforming was made, you have to hold a trigger in to stay transformed. so if you play as a car or plane you pull the trigger and that transforms and accelerates the vehicle, let go and you transform back to robot. other than there's a lot of invisible walls boxing you in to forced arena fights and that sort of thing. the combat is awful

I played it last night for about an hour. What an awful, awful control scheme. Thankfully it was just a rental.

The multiplayer was awesome, although I'm a bit of a biased source.

While others complain about the control scheme, once you get used to it it's very fluid. You see, everyone complains about holding the trigger to transform, but the reason you hold the trigger is so that you can hold down one of the buttons that do things in robot mode (jump, melee, etc.) to do that move as you come out of vehicle mode. What this results in is extremely fluid combat where you can transform, slam a guy into a wall as you come out of vehicle mode, then finish him off with your ranged guns. Once you get it down, which took me only about 30 minutes, it's really slick.

No one gave this game a chance due to the normal "movie game" stereotype. Once you get the unique control scheme down the entire game plays so smoothly. I personally find it one of the better games to play online right now - just need more people on it :]
